I can’t wait to hear the studio version of Light.
Oh wow, I’m excited. It’s awesome that the spoken intro is actually on the studio album. I was also anticipating what Light would sound like on the record; live versions either start from a segue or (in the case of the Gorge) just swell from nowhere, and the allotted track time didn’t seem long enough for the long buildup Trey’s band did into the song last year.
"If Gordon
You can hear how much fun the band is having recording the tune as Page urges Trey on during his brief solo by yelling
OK. I just got through listening to Joy for my second time and I am pretty excited.
The album is quite good. My copy didn’t have TTE on it, but I have heard everything else. Thoughts:
BDTNL could easily be on the radio.
I still don’t like Stealing Time…
Joy sounds really nice
Sugar Shack and Ocelot rule. Great recordings that do both songs justice
KDF is a tad slow, but still comes off nicely
Light is the highlight of the disc for me. Weird synth-pop introduction distinguishes the recording from live versions.
I’ve been around is a throw-away
and Twenty Years Later is a nice closer
All and all a good disc. I think the production is amazing and helps recall the albums of old. Reminds me of Hoist and Rift in terms of the way the band sounds. Fishman still sounds like he is asleep on all of these. Nothing impressive at all. Very pedestrian playing.
I will post more comments after a couple more listens.
Get yer head outta yer ass, Fish!
I hate to say this on Sept 1st… but my peer college phishheads and I concur that this album fucking ROCKS!
I just heard the album. I have to say, if what I have is the final mix, I am very very disappointed.
meh.
The few tracks I’ve heard didn’t have Mike up in the mix at all… it was almost impossible to hear him. Is it like that on the final cut?
for real, i can’t believe they didn’t fix that!
so far i’ve listened to the whole thing one time. i think it’s ok. of course hearing the live versions first makes these seem dull in comparison. not dull but just different. but i think what they did in the studio holds up pretty good. i’ll probably buy it and it will probably grow on me like round room did.
I’m streaming it off their myspace and I’m surprised to say that I like it.
Glenn, of course the songs are tame. That’s what studio albums are for Phish. Tame, cut and dry versions of songs that we most of the time know already from being played at the shows.
Gerenally I like it.
I truly dislike Ocelot. It is so boring…
Although I like the light, mellow feel to Ocelot, I have to agree. I just wish they would take it to another level, maybe speed it up towards the end.
I just got my copy in the mail yesterday. I’ve listened twice through, and I like it more than Undermind, and maybe Farmhouse. I realize this is a more grown up version of teh phish, and a lot of the songs have deep meanings about the past and what-not, but it’s lacking anything wacky or zany that I have grown to love about these guys.
Oh well, I still like it, and they could have done a far worse job, than this. Kudos to you, Phish!
just started the official DL from LP… reporting back soon with details on authenticity of leak.
Here’s the review I did for my school’s paper
Phish Delivers their most accessible album yet
Over Phish
So I went ahead and fixed the glitch on Ocelot and I like it a lot more. It makes the whole album a lot better.
I think this album is amazing. My only complaints are the first verse of backwards and joy other then that EVERY song is a heavy hitter. Even I’ve been around i think is hilarious and even musically I think trey is pulling out some great licks but its totally a gimmick but a necessary gimmick. There needed to be something that represented the humorous side of phish on this album and thats it.
I think The last half of the album is some of the best stuff they have ever done in a studio and when put into the context of the album TTE sounds amazing. I always liked it but now i LOVE it. It really completes this album and 20 years is such an amazing closing song. I would honestly give it 4 out of 5 stars. Also, the light intro is beyond words.
