Rift- album art

So, first off, let me say a love Rift, and would put it as my #1 album.

However, I’ve been curious- the album art is supposed to contain a representation of each song on the album (except Horse). I was wondering if anyone had picked out any other songs.

Here’s what I’ve found so far.

  1. Lengthwise- the guy sleeping in the bed
  2. Maze- the rug around the bed
  3. Mound- the mound pictured in the art on the wall
  4. Weigh- the scales along side the bed
  5. My Friend, My Friend- the knife by the table
  6. The Wedge- maybe the divide in the earth on the cover is the great divide?
  7. It’s Ice- the mirror by the bed?

This may be incorrect, but I thought the statue of what appears to me to be a woman looking away is the woman mentioned in “Rift”.

“And glared back at me one last look of dismay
As if she were the last one she thought I’d betray”

I am going to look for more now, I think I used to know these, but it has been years.

Good call WillBreathes- I thought the statute had to be something from a song, but couldn’t figure out what it could be.

Icculus,

Hmmm… interesting observation. I would guess that maybe the scene is supposed to occur silently in the morning/ morning stillness. Looking at the lyrics again, that’s really all I could see it being in the art. It does seem that light (sun or moon) is shining in the scene- you can see it reflecting next to the scale and off of the guy in the picture.

Also, I didn’t notice any obstacles or anything suspended in the trees, so that’s my guess.

According to the Phish.Net FAQ every title is represented on Rift except for “The Horse”, which was, of course, the cover for “Hoist”.

;D

Yeah, like Jude said…

Sparkle: the picture of the necklace inside the book in the leaflet (“release the links, undo the clasp”)

FEFY: the fish pictured on the bedside table closest to the chair (“waiting in the shallows as I do”?)

All Things Reconsidered: The open book on the table?

Silent in the Morning: the curved path in the back of the room (“as I stroll the avenue”)

(And hey, I just realized-- he’s sleeping in a… Round Room).

Things I can’t quite nail down are: the gnomes on the bedposts, the object on the table nearest to the man’s head, the tree in the upper right that looks like it has two legs and feet, and the chair. Also, I just now noticed that one of the lighter patches above the headboard looks just like a shark, or a fish. That’s a new one for me.

Nice points Psychlone… this was such a good idea for a thread… you gotta figure between all the minds on this board we will get them all.

maybe the gnomes on the bedpost are the man mentioned in “mound.”

“I heard he walked miles to the little mound…”

oh yeah…

i can’t seem to find a large enough or clear enough picture on the internet to get a good look. maybe i’ll look at my copy at home. this is one of the more interesting topics because 1. it can be interpretted in many ways and 2. it requires some degree of thought and insight!

Makes me wish I didn’t just have a burned copy of Rift. My buddy’s got the poster though and I was scrutinizing it a couple days ago… pretty cool shit.

i just found mound! the bumps in the blanket in one spot looks like the “Serpent Mound” that the indians made in ohio somewhere.

Hi I’m new,

There is also the picture of the guy scating on ICE in the mirror. (you see it better on the close up in the inlay)

Did anyone already mention this one; the bed is set on a maze.

there is also a neclace hanging off of the left side of the miror from sparkle
