RIP Don Herbert

I know this may not be relevant to most of you, but I found the news of Mr. Wizard’s passing pretty upsetting. He started talking to me on his weekly TV shows about the marvels of science around the time that I was 8 or 9, and continued his “lessons” to kids up until a few years ago from what I understand. He had a positive influence on millions of kids and in some respects is somewhat responsible for most of the scientific innovations generated by the adults that he stimulated in their formative years.

I remember watching Mr. Wizard at my babysitter’s house on Nickelodeon in the mid/late 80s, probably around 85 or 86. The stuff was fascinating, and it was done in a way that most people could understand. This, Capt. Kangaroo, and David and the Gnome were shows that I did NOT miss. When I wasn’t playing with Lincoln Logs or Tinker Toys, of course.

I used to love this guy on Nickelodeon when I was a wee lad. 'Tis a sad day for the science and wizard communities.

RIP Mr. Wizard.

Science will never be the same.

See you on the other side.

Loved this guy.

My favorite was when he explained why when you are riding a bike, if you toss a ball (I think it was an eight-ball)…(from billiards)… up in the air, it will continue forward instead of going straight up and down.

What a guy.

RIP

what a shame.

i loved mr wizard…i’d love to see some in dvd format.

i watched him on nick in the 80’s as well…but honestly i thought he was already dead. :x

He has a web site where most of his shows from the 50’s and the 80’s are available on DVD for a decent price as well.

I think you’re thinking of Bill Nye.

Bill Nye’s dead?

No, I was just kidding around.

I almost went with Abe Vigoda. He’s been putting up with “He’s still alive?” jokes for what seems like 10-15 years now.

I always wished that Mr. Dress-Up and Mr. Wizard would have a fight. That would rock.

And I’m not making a joke but Ave Vigoda’s still alive!!? I just saw The Godfather recently and he looked he was pushing 80 in that movie…and it was almost 30 years ago. Holy crap.

Exactly.

He turned 86 a few months ago.

Assuming that most of teh Godfather was filmed in 1971, that would have made him 50 during filming. Didn’t he look a lot older than that???

Maybe he gave a call to Dick Clark and…welll…you know…DICK CLARK!!!
