round one breakdown/updates

ok guys… less than a week left. games will end sunday at noon. time to bring down the hammer.

mark me down for another one on the big board Zoot. I’m on fire.

what does the x stand for because i have 4 games going on and i guess im just not sure what the x means.

the x is a nonexistant match cuz it is when player one plays against player one. and u cannot play against urself.

i have all 6 of my games going still and i leave friday for the weekend. i will not have access to the internet but i will be back sunday evening sometime. think we can get an extension til midnight sunday night?

i made up a poll to solve the problem of an extension. it closes thursday and i’ll go with whatever the final results may be. your in the hands of democracy now good booztravlr…

btw, if the “chess is for nerds” option wins we must all report to the “???a” thread for a thorough paddling.

ok looks like we have an extension…

round one will end tuesday feb 28th @ midnight est.[/size]

remember, unfinished games will be decided by the value of the pieces remaining on the board. that is the positive or negative number at the far left of your capture tally.

-10 in the example above (positive score = win; negative score = loss)

^
well that blows.

im down just 1 piece (bishop) to CR and she hasn’t moved in 3 days. so i lose? eh. im getting screwed.

ATTENTION PEOPLE WHO HAVE GAMES REMAINING: swipe 1 piece from your opponent and then just sit there for 3 days. you’ll win.

what do you want me to do? that has been the rule from the beginining. i layed out the rules in explicit detail at the start… the above was just a reminder. if you didn’t like that rule then you should have said something before we started… not with five days left in the round. the problem on my end is that i can’t let these games go one indefinitely. and it seems pretty reasonable to look at who has the advantage at the end of the round and give them the win. (btw… being up a biship is a pretty sizable advantage. at a competitive level people often resign when they go down a major piece. in a game like this you shouldn’t give up a piece unles you can take one back.)

i understand your frustration… i’d love for everyone to put in the time to make every game complete. i’d also love for everyone to read the directions before they play… but we’re shit out of luck on both those fronts, eh?

a quick suggestion… pm CR (or send her a comment through gameknot) and set up a time over the next five days to meet up and finish the game. she’s a reasonable woman… i’m sure she wouldn’t have a problem with that. (i’d suggest the same for anyone else who has an unfinished match.)

zoot,

you are doing a bang-up job buddy, and have managed our inevitable slacker-dome very well i must say.

i’m likin that breeze

k…i’ll shut up now.

quick question. i took all of famousmockingbirds pieces and he only had a king left. i managed to surround his king so since it was his turn, he was unable to move anywhere. therefore i win. but the website says its a draw. how can that be? did i have to put him in check then lock up all the surrounding pieces for it to be a win? i am really confused because i had something like +25 and had so many pieces left when he only had a king.

Is your king in check too? That’s the only rational explanation I can come up with.

no, it was well away from all the action going on. i cant figure out how to open up the game now that its been decided either. oh well, if it comes down to it its still better than a loss!

its called a Stalemate when he can not move any of his peices because he will be in check. And, it is considered a Draw.

that sucks. i assumed that was the same as a check mate so i didnt bother to put him in check. how else could one get a draw? besides the obvious mutual agreement that neither person can win with only a few pieces on the board…aka running for your life but never being caught

^ That happened to me with Jawbone. I took his last piece (besides the King), and the game ended. I was pretty dumbfounded until I realized what happened. I didn’t even see it coming.

yeah the lone king stalemate definitely stings… that why the endgame is so important and often the hardest part of the game. you need to make sure your opponent can always make a move until your ready to put them in that final checkmate.

on the other hand, if you’ve been beaten down to your king its often a good strategy to wedge yourself in and try to force the draw.

hope everyone is enjoying their games… please do what you can to complete your matches before tuesday so no one is left with sour experience. if there are any problems let me know.

(and thanks for the encouragement dan… i guess people are bound to get pissed… its a competition and some folks will inevitably end up on the losing end. doin my best to make it as fair as possible.)

i realize that’s an incredibly subtle shot at me. I guess i did come off a little strong. my apologies. it’s one of those things that no one really notices until it actually happens i think. again, sorry.

i suppose my consolation is that even if i had beaten CR, bigdude would have advanced anyway.

no worries man.

hope you were able to have fun with it.
