^ i watched that PBS documentary, it was on around midnight on a Saturday a couple weeks ago i think. so good
couldn’t have said it any better myself! there’s just something about listening to cooke (and other 50’s/60’s soul and r&b) that is so great. the descriptions of their good times, bad times and everything in between has this freshness to it, maybe even innocence? partly because it was, compared to how things are now, but also because they had to keep it clean, otherwise they wouldn’t get radio play and it wouldn’t be accepted by the masses if it was too risky. a great example is “Having a Party”… lyrics like “the cokes are in the icebox, the popcorn’s on the table” make me crack up! or i can just see someone describing their weekend to somone at work on a monday morning, “MAAAANN, it was wild the other night! we was TWISTIN’ all night long!! damn that was somethin’!”
and now that you mention it, brady, i’m gonna go hit up a library this week to see what they got. i don’t utilize public libraries nearly enough.
i listened to “Bring It On Home to Me” about 20 times in about 2 hours the other night. i just kept going back to it
awesome thread bump
