Sam Cooke appreciation thread

I bought this album years ago. I have since misplaced it. But I do enjoy Sam Cooke. Particularly “Cupid” and “Wonderful World.”

“You Send Me” is one of the best songs ever recorded.

The events surrounding his death are quite bizarre though.
Talk about a strange way to go out.
That man had some demons in his life near the time of his death.

^YES!!! Good call Brian. Sam had one of the most endearing voices of all time. So sweet it should be illegal. You send me is also one of my favs and possibly one of the best vocal deliveries of all time.

I love Sam’s voice and his songs are quite timeless. Count me in on this appreciation thread!

29 top-40 hits in only 8 years!
Not to mention influencing a generation of future stars.

I didn’t realize he was only 33 when he died. There’s talk of even a conspiracy theory that he was murdered.

"My brother was first class all the way. He would not check into a $3 a night motel; that wasn’t his style. Singer Etta James revealed in her book

This is long, but sounds pretty thorough:

Sam Cooke was a genius, with an incredible voice. I love his voice.

I listen to “A Change Is Gonna Come” when I really want inspiration.

BUMP!

just got his Live at the Harlem Square Club album from the library, ripped it onto my computer but before i could listen to it my computer crashed. Oh well, looks awesome though. Recorded right down here in Miami on the chitlin circuit.

Sam forever!

I have Harlem Square on vinyl. It is probably my single most listened to record. The Chain Gang on that will give you goosebumps.

Signed. He was one of the best.

i almost stared a sam cooke thread a few weeks ago. there was some special on him on PBS here in ny. what an amazing story…makes Animal House even a better movie w/ his songs/…

^ i watched that PBS documentary, it was on around midnight on a Saturday a couple weeks ago i think. so good

couldn’t have said it any better myself! there’s just something about listening to cooke (and other 50’s/60’s soul and r&b) that is so great. the descriptions of their good times, bad times and everything in between has this freshness to it, maybe even innocence? partly because it was, compared to how things are now, but also because they had to keep it clean, otherwise they wouldn’t get radio play and it wouldn’t be accepted by the masses if it was too risky. a great example is “Having a Party”… lyrics like “the cokes are in the icebox, the popcorn’s on the table” make me crack up! or i can just see someone describing their weekend to somone at work on a monday morning, “MAAAANN, it was wild the other night! we was TWISTIN’ all night long!! damn that was somethin’!”

and now that you mention it, brady, i’m gonna go hit up a library this week to see what they got. i don’t utilize public libraries nearly enough.

i listened to “Bring It On Home to Me” about 20 times in about 2 hours the other night. i just kept going back to it

awesome thread bump

^if you like the “Bring It on Home To Me”, I have a cover for you…

^ what cover?

^It is the Sam Cooke “Bring It on Home To Me”, but I cannot find what I wanted to post… I will hunt it down~

has anybody else ever heard his version of “Danny Boy”?

years later i can’t get tired of it.

Played some Sam Cooke last night at the bar, nice call!

I need some Sam tonight
