What are some great versions of this song?
I have enjoyed Trey’s solo ‘Sand’ much more than any Phish version I ever heard.
However, just before I saw this thread I started downloading 9/11/99. “First ever, EERIEST Sand” is in the title of torrent. I guess this is supposed to be the one to change my mind.
I agree…I always liked the addition of horns with the TAB versions
This may be one of my LEAST favorite songs to see live. I saw it something like three or four shows in a row in 2000, and it just never seemed to go anywhere - Trey would F around with his little keyboard…ugh.
That being said my favorite Sand that I saw was from the second night of Albany in Sept. 2000 with Michael Ray on Sax.
I like the best of both worlds version from 4-11-04 Higher Ground…starts off with TAB and every other member of phish is sitting in and eventually all of TAB drops out and its just the boys…then they go into chalkdust…oh yeah baby
Tom Tom Club (sideproject from the bassist and drumer of hte talking heads) do a nice funky cover of it on the sharin in the groove album.
Trey’s onstage keyboard experiment didn’t last too long as far as I remember. I suppose there was a reason that a proper keyboard player was hired for the job!!
^
ehhh…I think it lasted over the better part of 2 tours. Summer/Fall 2000?
I moved this into Live Phish - individual song threads probably should be in the LP category.
He played it in 99, too.
^
yes, yes he did.
I for one enjoy “Sand.” I don’t want a spaced out 30-minute version every 3 shows, but throw down a 20-minute funky, ravey, techno “Sand” every once in a while and I’m happy.

Set II- opener
Gotta Jibboo > Sand
This is the real deal.
^ good call gamecat…I was just going to look up the date of that show…That Sand is beautiful.
i like the big cypress sand. it makes a segue into quadrophonic toppling from the siket disc, making its first and only live appearance. together, its about 36 minutes long and very hypnotic and relaxing. ive taken naps to it.
i liked the heavy booms that trey used to put off of the keyboard…
as far as sand goes i have no input…
i’m listening to the 9/11/99 (first phish sand) referenced above and thought i’d pass along that it sounds pretty decent. mike comes through well and has that ‘in your face’ sound… i noticed a bit a of a muted quality on the first listen… but overall worth the download. i’ve only listened to the wolfman’s… its in segue as we speak.

edit: although i must say listening to mike roll the same bass line over and over again is painful. that was sort of tony’s gig… but mike need room to roam.
i was lucky enough to be less than 10 rows from the stage for the tightest version of this song i’ve ever heard.
12/30/03 Miami - first set
That is a great one as well.
I like the Deer Creek '00 one better, but that segue into Quadrophonic Toppling is MIND BLOWING!
I remember Kuroda doing this thing with the lights, he made the entire stage white if I remember. I’ve never seen that since. Crazy Psychedelic sights/sounds that Sand>Toppling.
Good call dmcnul91
yeah Cypress '99 RULES. it is probably the best “Sand” out there.
runner up = Shoreline '00. DC '00 anchors a SWEET set as well.
Sand from Plasma is great IMO.
I cannot believe no one has mentioned 7-3-00 Camden. No words can express what this sand is all about. And whoever said that Miami 03 version is the king, well i want some of your drugs!
