Scents and Subtle Sounds

Does anyone else wish they put the intro and the jam together? The first time I heard this song was Deer Creek '03, and they played the entire piece together. I think it works much better that way… Maybe I am crazy though.

‘Undecided, undefined…’

Another one of my favourite later Phish songs. It’s brilliantly written and arranged. But I like your idea for the arrangement, will!

Well… Atleast one person agrees with me!

I haven’t heard them togeter yet. I tried playing the album versions of the two songs togeter, but it was obvious that they didn’t go together

Find a copy of 7/23/03 Deer Creek, I mean Verizon Wire… whatever.

Show opener, full song, great.

I like the tune WAY better as one piece. The contrast between the two parts is devine. When they played it in Phoenix for the first time in 03 everyone was buzzing about it. I prayed for another at Alpine later that summer and sure enought there it was. I was really dissapointed later when they stopped playing the intro. oh well

The problem I have with this song is that when they put the two parts together there’s a really jarring transition from the Intro part to the song itself.

Yeah Will, I’m with you. They should have put Scents right after the intro. I fell in love with that song during summer 03 too. Very complex drumming - Fishman at his best. Still a fricken great album.

Maybe it should be two completely different songs then.

I just dislike the intro/actual song idea… Pink Floyd almost did it to death. (SOYCD, Pigs on a Wing…)

One of my favorite Phish songs. The version from Shoreline, 7/9/03, is of both sections and it’s really good. I agree, the transition between the two parts is brutal–they could have done better with that. I love these lyrics:

If you would stop and notice
That we number every day
And allow the many moments
Left uncounted slip away
You don’t have to count them
Just enjoy them one by one
Then things will take a different hue
And sparkle in the sun

I must agree. I love waves as well

I actually sited this song during a speech on waking up to the real world. The Professor made a real asshole coment like “ah yes the always inciteful phish” I wanted to punch him in the eye.

i love the whole album, but scents is my fav from that album

I prefer the intro and the song together too. The song at Alpine Valley (7/19/2003) is great. I used to listen to that recording all the time a couple years ago. I rediscovered it this morning and was reminded of how great it is. “Just enjoy them one by one” indeed.

Sadly, the intro to Undermind is the first piece of Phish I’ve heard. Not because it is a bad song, but because I arrived late to the scene. I absolutely love the intro and song itself. The lyrics are amazing. And I love that little guitar noise after the song, right in the beggining of Undermind.
