Seen any good movies lately?

Yeah, so I finally watched The Big Lebowski over the weekend. I know I’m a little late.

It was pretty good. I don’t know if I’m gonna go sign up for some conventions or festivals over it just yet, but it was good. I like that it gets weird, and then weirder, and weirder, and weirder and weirder and weirder. Every time you think you’ve hit the weirdness plateau, the movie goes in a completely different, even more absurd and unpredictable direction. I like that. Absurd things are cool.

Great flick. Priceless quoteable dialog, and I really dig Jeff Bridges’ performance.

Yeah, Lebowski is a classic. So many great memorable moments and lines. John Goodman is awesome…possibly the best movie that I can remember him in though he was also pretty hilarious in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou.

smokey, you’re entering a world of pain my friend.

^ Haha, I love how Goodman is always like “this isn’t 'Nam!” to other people, as if THEY are the ones having trouble living in the here and now. :problem:

I have to say I expected The Dude to be a little… I dunno… cooler? He was sort of lame. I thought Bridges played the character well, I guess I just wanted the character to be a bit less of a loser. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s just it, he’s total cool loser.

but he’s the dude man. you know, The Dude, His Dudeness, El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.

But not really! He’s ‘cool’ insofar as he’s an appealing character in a movie. By “I wish he was cooler” I meant… like Fonzie’s type of cool. Y’know? The guy who is laid back, and seen as a loser by the establishment types, but who knows his shit, has a way with people, gets stuff done, you know? I don’t see The Dude as having any particular aptitude or anything like that. By and large he’s just plain lucky, that’s all.

That’s just one minor quirk about it, for me. I heard so much about this movie for so long (I had no idea it’d really been out for 10 years now, my god) that I guess I just had a different picture of The Dude in my head than the character he ended up being.

watched the film “Scent of a Woman” last night…Pacino was absolutely phenominal…highly recommend it

I love the Big Lebowski… but it has reached over-rated status in my opinion. College was much like this thread is turning into, quote after quote.

I haven’t watched more than 5 total minutes of TBL and I refuse to do so.

Unless forced by terrorists or kidnappers.

Even then, I’m putting up one hell of a fight.

^Well now you’re just being a hater.

I guess but he’s basically a bit of a loser stoner at that point. I wouldn’t expect loads of coolness from the Dude and don’t get any. Like the movie states, “He just wants his rug back.” Seriously…that’s ALL there is to it.

… And isn’t that pretty cool? … man?

get some friends. get white russian supplies. take a drink everytime they say dude. good time ahead.

HAHAHA, yes, exactly. That is EXACTLY what I’m talking about. He just says “…dude!!” or “… man??” in this kind of pathetic whiney voice and that is not what I was expecting.

But I did really enjoy it, like I said originally, it was a lot of fun. Don’t get the wrong idea b/c of one comment. Great movie, a bit overrated like Will said but it’s just the result of being a huge cult favorite for years now. Thus, the fault of this guy: :ugeek:

Just want to make one more Dude comment … Fonzie was always a nerd deep down with the cool exterior. The dude is like, cool deep down with a loser exterior and job situation & bathrobe to match.

While Christmas shopping I stumbled upon Traveling Wilburys, the collection set. Both albums and documentary DVD. I forget what it retailed for originally, like $50 or 60 ... it was marked f**king $9.99. To Kevin and Diana love Santa-Jesus.

Watched the DVD last night and remembered this is some of the greatest music I've ever loved. DVD was really sweet, just such an insight into the Wilburys sessions. Recommended, especially for freakin $10 bucks.

^Wow. Is that the luckiest of Christmas miracles or what? I loved TW! If you found such a thing again and you picked another up I would gladly pay you to send it to me. Was it at a chain store like Best Buy where I may potentially find it myself? “Well it’s all right, riding around in the breeze. Well it’s all right, if you live the life you please.”

I totally agree with Kevin’s sentiments on The Dude. Cool doesn’t necessarily entail powering electronic equipment with touch, it is a state of mind and I think Jeff Lebowski is there. It is not my favorite of the Coen’s movies, but still far better than most. To me, even the worst Coen movie is better than 98% of the other crap out there.

Newbury Comics! It’s a New England chain, so I don’t know if you’re anywhere near any of them.

Looks like a mistake, but even their website says $10 … weird thing is, it says “Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 1” as the title, but lists the songs for both albums plus bonus tracks. So it looks like they’re confused about what it is they’re selling. On the other hand, it does say it’s normally $44.98 or somethin.

Incidentally Half.com & Amazon have 'em for about $20.

edit - if I do go to Newbury Comics anytime soon I’ll check for 'em … not sure when I’ll get out there though.

No need to check, I’ll order it from the site. Thanks! I dub thee Roscoe Wilbury.

I saw both Avatar IMAX 3-D and Sherlock Holmes on Christmas and the day after. I have to say I really enjoyed both of them. I didn’t expect much from SH, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. Jude Law was even good as the Doc, I typically don’t like his acting. Guy Ritchie did well with this.

Avatar is a fantastic movie, in my humble opinion. While it may be kind of predictable as far as the story goes, the effects are amazing and the characters are very likeable. IN fact I found myself liking the main blue-chick in ways that I shouldn’t  But it is the hottie who played Uhura on the new Star Trek, better known as my future ex-wife.
