Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

So, the question is, which do you find more annoying during an acapella/unmic’d song?

An occasional W00T!?

Or a sea of "shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"s that follow?

I vote neither.

The occasional Whooo is tolerable (but still annoying), and I can understand the shhhhhhhhh’s.

What really annoys me is when the audience is trying to scream out songs or random thoughts to the band and the rest of the crowd, or if they are talking to their friends really loudly during “Sweet Adeline,” or whatever. I want to punch those people.

I was just thinking about this when listening to 4.1.92 last night. They were singing “Carolina” at the end of the first set. The crowd was laughing AT them more than laughing with them!! This happens in most of the early show recordings I have. I almost feel bad for the guys up there. I mean, part of singing those songs is for novelty and for fun, but I would imagine Phish took it pretty seriously. They were trying to harmonize and sing a beautiful little song as a barbershop quartet, and their audience laughed at them. Jeez.

i think the “shhhhh”-ing is hilarious, but that hilarity would not be without the “wooot”-ing, so therefore i voted neither.

I love hearing both on recordings

people shhhhhing always cracks me up. I remember turning to my old tour friend Doug and being all faced at some show and going “oohhhhh shhhhhhhhhhhhh” and cracking up. We ended up doing it the rest of the show and people thought/knew we were nutz. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh,

and oh yah, where the FUCK is Ant???

I hate them both. But I voted for the “Woot” because it sparks the whole thing. People laughing bothers me too, like during Hello My Baby on Slip Stitch and Pass. I could care less if someone wants to cheer and whatnot when they’re singing it in the mics but when its a tiny theater and they’re doing something that cool, please do us a favor and shut the fuck up.

It’s just so charming to hear a nice ‘sshhh’.

I like the shhhh…makes me laugh…the wooting and volume fluctuations due to it makes my head hurt.

I hate the Shhhhh because it’s so loud and treble-ly.

booooooo w00t

I don’t really know what to vote…they’re both pretty annoying…

I know the people who are “shushing” mean well and everything, but they’re making just as much noise as the people yelling…

The reason I started this is because the last few shows I’ve listened to, the “shhhhhh” has been more troublesome than the woot!

Like, of course the woot is annoying. But the Shhhhhhh blocks out ALL the sound from the band.

So basically if you were at a show and “Shhhhhhhh”'d someone, it was just as bad as the woot!

that’s what i thought this thread was gonna be aboot.

but i’d have to say the shhh is more annoying. it comes out of annoyance and only compounds the annoyance to others.

if you’re getting annoyed by a w00t maybe you should give the ole w00t a try some time? it might be fun…

but yes, persistant (read: drunken/wasted) hollerin can be MUCH more annoying than a little shhhh

The WHOOOHS start it… disrespectful to the band. Then the SHHHs mean well, but fuck it up too. Tough choice, but I’m saying the SHHHHS because tons of people chime in.

This is the first thing I thought of after reading the initial question!

I don’t really mind either one. It adds a certain element to the listening experience.

I don’t mind either, but the laughing bothers me.

if phish gets you to that point where you think you need to shout i dont think there is anything wrong with a “woooooooooooo!!!”

of course if they keep coming from the same person over and over that could prove to be annoying.

the “shhhhhhhh” makes me rich with anger though…makes my blood boil…yes…boil.

Mike says shhhhhhhhhh.

It makes my blood reach 212 degrees Fahrenheit as well.
