Snippet

I don’t think we’ve done a thread like this. If we have, I apologize, and will lock/move/delete this one if someone can find one similar.

We all have our favorite eras of Phish (1992-1994, 1997-1999, PH)
We all have our favorite Phish tours (summer 1993, fall 1997)
We all have our favorite runs (Deer Creek, Hampton, Gorge)
We especially all have our favorite shows.
We even have our favorite sets.

I’m want to go even deeper than all that. On a micro-jam level, if you will. I’m interested to see if you can pinpoint your favorite 20-30 seconds of live Phish. I’m looking more for improvisiation (for instance, please don’t post “the intro to “The Lizards” is my favorite 20 seconds of Phish”).

Is there a snippet from a particular jam that you stop what you’re doing and hone in on every time? Where you KNOW the band is peaking, and the audience knows it too? Where you think “I’ve heard this a million times before and it sounds just as gorgeous every time”?

Yes, I know we’ve discussed favorite “jams.” But that could include a 20-minute jam out of “Tweezer” or even a 5-minute “Drowned” jam.
I’m looking for specific examples, with timings if possible. And yes, I know we all have several of them. I just want to know what the first one everyone thinks of is. Because, generally speaking, the first one you think of is the one you cherish the most.

For example, mine would be 7:49-8:20 of the “Bathtub Gin” from Hampton '98. You can actually hear Mike thumping along and then raise it to the next level, almost simultaneously with Trey and Page. I like to compare it to a train that is gradually gaining speed, and then when the train metaphorically hits 7:15, the engineers on the train lock gears and are roaring down the track at top speed! It’s a vision I can’t get out of my head when I hear this “Gin.” Now obviously this isn’t the best “Gin” ever. It’s probably not even the best “Gin” from 1998, or even from the fall tour. But I think this is the one I like the best because when I first heard 7:49-8:20, I “GOT” Phish.

Thoughts?

Gonna go back to trusty ole 03/13/1992 Antelope>BBFCFM>Antelope.

2 sections. I don’t know the exact time.

But after the Hawaii vocal jam, Trey does a little guitar riff (random note signal?) and they SLAM! back into Antelope.

Then on the next break down, Page plays the same notes and they SLAM! back into Antelope once again.

Musical genius. I’ll come back with track times later. Busy listening to Euro '97 Winter tour.

8.14.93 Tinley Park Jam>Antelope. The whole jam is awesome, and at About 3:20 of the jam is where it starts getting real crazy and then BAM! Back into Antelope. They are so ON! Probably my FAVORITE “snippet” ever. Check it out, I wanna hear what you guys think about it too.

By the way, I totally saw the train during that Gin jam.

Tough to say…I’m at work so I don’t have track times at all, but I can probably think of a few.

12/29/94 Bowie…after the singing ends and it goes into the jam, but it is different and you know it is not coming back to reality any time soon.

11/22/97 Halleys - right near the end where they tease “He Used to Cut the Grass”

Oh so so many. Good thread.

A couple moments that “got” me:

6.22.94, the first 20 seconds of the 2nd or 3rd “Mike’s Song” in the second set. I think its the very end of track 7 (simple) and the first part of track 8. Trey enters into the “Mike’s” theme with incredible force and power, and fishman does this drawn-out, two measure solo. Its awesome.

9.14.00, the beginning of the post-Suzy jam, when I realized this was a continuation of the song, it was incredibly funky, and it was going to last another 9 minutes.

6.17.06 (I know, I know, not Phish, but GRAB!). During the first Suskind Hotel, at around the 4 minute mark. Joe and Marco suddenly stop, and its just Mike and Trey doing the bob-and-weave (you know what I’m talking about-PHUNK). Watching this 20 seconds on that Bonnaroo stream did get me a little wet, I must confess.

There are a few moments in the 7.19.03 YEM jam that I consider “snippets,” but I can’t pinpoint them right now.

During the Murat Gin (8.13.93), around the 9 minute mark, Mike starts this really upbeat and interesting bass line, which Trey leads into a “weekapaug” jam.

The end of the raging parts of 6.19.04 Piper and 6.25.04 7below, when Trey backs off and the jam slows down to a slinky groove. The 6.25.04 one —>segues into Buffalo Bill.

6.24.04–the first few minutes of the DwD “jam.” Its pretty much just Trey shredding his guitar to pieces, but its really great stuff. One of my friends who doesn’t like phish turned to me and said, “Whoa, I think I just had a “Phish” moment.” hahaha.

6.23.04–When they busted into Crosseyed after a short Halley’s jam and the crowd exploded. I was about 15 rows back and this is a moment I’ll never forget. Also in this version, right after Fish sings “Facts are nothing in the face of men!,” he whoos and whelps a little bit, and the crowd just goes crazy.

The 10.31.96 Simple. When page starts to use the clapping effect.

Anytime Mike gets a solo within a “Tube” jam. (sorry I can’t be more specific)

The best 20-30 seconds of Phish improv, you say??

Hmmmm…that’s tough.

You know what, I love the 7:00-7:10 mark, where Mike is playing a really great bass line.

You know what’s crazy… I hear a Mr. Completely jam around 7:39-7:47.

This thread gave me a good idea…I may compile some great moments of Phish and SS them, maybe make a mix out of them.

12/7/97 Tube, where Trey and Page take those wah-wah solos for starters ;D

Nice idea for a thread…

-the butter smooth segue between AC/DC and Psycho Killer

-the post-main theme jam in the Great Went Gin…so happy and melodious…

Like a waterfall! This version DEFINITELY contains some of my favorite Mike playing.

Stash - A Live One - about 9:25 in when they go into a “bubble”.

Ahhhhhhh yes.

listen to this!

The Coventry Glide is pretty much perfect in my opinion.

::snickers::

But seriously. 11/17/97 Ghost. Going by Live Phish 11 timing. 11:05 to 12:15. A perfect, beautiful, spellbinding, peaking jam. The IT Ghost has a similar peak from 12:27 to 13:29 that does it for me everytime.

Runner-up is the 12/14/95 Halley’s Comet from 10:40 to 11:29. This is just genius, high level but not complicated improvisation that you intuitively grasp immediately what they’re going for.

greg, i see you’re a fan of the new pornographers…have you ever heard Neko Case’s solo stuff? it’s amazing.

That’s extremely badass.

11-13-98 Cleveland State UniversityConvocation Center, Cleveland, OH

the actual point of transition between Meat and Harry Hood is something incredibly cool to hear. They space-out the start/stop Meat jam for a while and seamlessly morph it into Hood in the blink of an eye so that in a way, for a few seconds, the end of Meat and the Beginning of Hood are woven together and it just works. that would be the snippet of choice for me.

this show was also the first Dirt i ever heard, and i loved it. but that’s neither hear nor there…

I should know this, but what show is that from??

i think thats carl perrazo from santana doin that…or is it trey? i dont think its page? did trey still have his drums in 96? my memory is failing me.

and i still think my favorite snippet is the segue from stash > manteca from 11.14.95…that clav and then trey with that one note…ahhhh!!!

so sick.

i also love the jam right after the singing in mikes from slip stitch and pazz.

or the bowie > cities segue from 7.30.97

or the segue from dwd > mikes from 7.22.97…so slow and creepy…but so fucking sick…makes me wanna stick my hand down my throat its so sick.
