SPAC '04

I didn’t see a thread dedicated solely to the SPAC '04 shows, so what the hell? I got these shows from Rasta-brah (thanks again) and they are face melting. Both shows are must hears, IMHO. Still I think 6/20 is the better show, because the first set feels like a ramp you’re climbing to that amazing jam out of Drowned and the entirety of set two. If you love those 4 song second sets where the heavy ju-ju is dropped, then this show is for you. Seven Below -> Ghost -> Twist is something out of a Make Your Own Setlist post, and the only way they could top off a set like that? YEM, of course.
All that said, 6/19 is a fucking monster in an entirely different way. It’s so easy to gloss over everything about this show aside from The Piper -> Gotta Jibboo > Limb By Limb, but damnit, be fair and listen to it all.

the Twist is my favorite post-hiatus jam. There’s like that 1 minute long spot where the band just locks in and syncopates to eachother…like everything is used as a rhythm instrument…so good. Then there’s that part base around Mike’s bass line…

6/19/04 was my only Phish show, I was lucky enough to be able to attend such an amazing show. The Piper jam is incredible, such high intensity! The version of reba is amazing, some of Trey’s best licks in the jam. The whole is great from start to finish. I can’t judge which is better though, as I have only head this show. I can’t believe I havent gotten night 2 yet, I have heard so many great things about it and I can’t wait to get it. I’ll probably buy it from LivePhish.

This is a tough one, and I was at both shows. I voted for 6/19 only because I thought it was better through and through than 6/20. The first half of the first set 6/20 was lack-luster but the second set was without a doubt the best set of the two days. I always listen to Twist when I’m in the mood for some funk.

I’ve posted my rave review of 6/20 before, including the orgasmic buildup in YEM up to the BOYYYYYYYYY! I got the chills at every show I went to, but not much compared to that moment. I still get them whenever I listen to the 6/20 version. The whole ampitheatre seemed to lift up and explode right at that moment. I’m getting the chills remembering it!

Havent heard either. A sin I know… But I have actually not heard any of '04.

Never saw Phish there, but Pink Floyd did it all over my face in the summer of 73 at SPAC with the DSOTM tour. Oh Baby did they ever.

can anybody send me 6-20 over instant messenger? my sn is bith aneth.

i voted for 6-20 because of everything after drowned.

I was at both shows… in fact it was my return to phish… a little late I suppose, after my own hiatus from shows… boy was I psyched to get that Reba first thing. Anyway I loved 6-19 but 6-20 floored me. The rift was a bit botched but the set worked so well up to the drenching hose of drowned… it was a sign of things to come… I love when the first set sets up the second and this was a perfect case… They jumped into -7 and out came the glow war just to my left on the lawn… the segue into twist was so perfect… after all that the band was just glowing and happy… YEM was a perfect capper.

Fono I BET tehy did! Bastard:P

It’s all about the drowned jam… I voted for 6/20.

Tough call…

Both shows were great (I was at both too). That 4 song second set on the 20th was superb…I remember after it was over I looked over my setlist and did the Kyle’s Mom Wah-Wah-Waaaaaaaht double take.

Listening to them again it’s hard not to pick the 20th, but when I was there…man there was some special something about the jam in/around the piper on the 19th…i kept raving about it the rest of the tour to everyone i met…‘dude you gotta hear the spac piper. a brand new groove dude!’ yes i was stoned, but i maintain there was something special happening that the recordings don’t quite do justice

PS - for fuck’s sake Will, listen to these shows

PPS - fonefono…youdaman

Everybody knows how I FEEL about Post HiatusPhish…

But to the surprise of MANY, these are REALLY EXCELLENT SHOWS in my humble opinion. I’m blown away by the jams on 6-19. Pure viceral psychedelia. 6-20 has an excellent setlist and sound. I have only heard it once but was totally impressed (you need to send it to me, GLENN).

I play 6-19 all the time. I just let it play all the way through and grooooooove. Special thanks to the good Doctor PF for turning me onto this gem!

I voted 6/19 because I love the Piper > Jibboo > Limb by Limb, I may have to give the second night another listen though and I may change my mind…maybe I should have done that before I voted…oh well.

But wasn’t that Piper the one that we agreed could be called “The Piper”?

Care to set up a trade? Will have to wait atleast a week though… Time for me to move the F out of Dayton, Ohio.

I was in the pavillion that night, first balcony and what I experienced during that piper jam was a real blending of the crowd and the band/music… I knew it simply wouldn’t translate on tape but its still a wet ride to listen to on cd.

During that “tweeprise” type jam everytime they came around to the “1” the energy increased and the crowds energy increased as well till the two sounds eventually blended and I couldn’t really pick apart the music from the crowd noise… they became one… it was truly a moment where the band and crowd fed off each other and blended in perfect harmony… I remember having this HUGE smile on my face and was just blown away. No way a recording can capture that but we can listen and imagine. The LxL had a similar effect.

I’d be happy to send out copys if anyone is interested, just pm me…

Thanks golphish for putting it into words for me.

That’s a beautiful (and accurate) way of describing what went down in there that evening.

Check your PM Will

No, you check YOUR PM jamphandan

wow what an awesome weekend. got to spac after settin up camp at a campground about 20 mins away. parked by the mineral baths and walked across the 13th green to get to the venue. wow what an awesome walk. i did lose my 2003 winter tour long sleeve t shirt which i wore almost all the time. wow i miss that shirt. but yeah. beers and the golf course could you ask for a better way to get to the venue. both shows were jaw dropping. i voted for the 2nd night cause of the ju ju of the show. wow what a second set on top of the rift opener, dr. jack mcconnell and the rest of the set. wow.

I agree with you completely, It was simply amazing!! The enery was nuts, and I agree theres no way it oculd be translated to tape. A surround sound DVD would be sick though! ;D

6-19-04 Piper…best PIPER ever???

I was there on 6/19. Didn’t go to 6/20. It was terrific. Plus I got to take my (at the time) 13-year old daughter to her first and only Phish show!

Greg____ - she’s got a boyfriend so don’t even think about it…
