Steve Kimock

I would like to hear some thoughts on Steve Kimock.

He is someone who has slipped through the cracks for me, until recently. I am still incredibly new to him, but am really liking what I hear so far.

The only times I have seen Kimock perform were last year in a couple of Rhythm Devils show. I have been listening to this 1988 Zero show a whole bunch lately. Zero really blows me away, and I wonder why I wasn’t turned onto this earlier than now!

Now I just wish Kimock was mixed in a little better on those Phil&Friends '99 shows with Page and Trey.

So, thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

he is a great guitar player, but when i’ve listened to him play i’ve never gotten too jazzed up or anything

he’s falls into the category of - I have great chops but can’t write anything great, IMO

i’ve never been taken back or even really felt like listening all the way through any of his stuff, i listened to him recently, it was some show that was on comcast ondemand, and i was pretty meh about it, think i may have turned it off to put on phil and friends or something

i don’t know, to each their own

I’ve always respected him tremendously as a player.

I like Kimock’s playing. I prefer his work with Everyone Orchestra, Zero, and Phil. His solo material is not for these ears, but he’s a great team player.

I saw him at 10KLF with Steven Perkins from Jane’s Addiction. It really didn’t do it for me. It sounds like the consensus is that he is a great player, but his repetoir leaves a lot to be desired.

I saw him with the Everyone Orchestra, and he was damn good. I’ve listened to his recordings and they are good too. A solid player who does a good job with melodies and technical playing at the same time

YEAH, not to keen on his solo stuff, however ZERO ROCKS the charts fo sho…Steve Kimock is IN the family no doubt

not bad, a little adult-contmparary maybe, but not bad.

Saw him play lead in a Hornsby band several years ago and he was fantastic. Really played well against Hornsby’s style.

A friend sent me some Zero boots shortly after that, and although the music was tight, the songs left me a little flat. Say what you will about Trey, but he always knew how to compose music, whether as a song or inside a jam, the man has a creative spark that’s undeniable.

Maybe it’s me, but he seemed a lot bigger in the jamband scene a few years ago…like the late 90’s.

And, I’ve got some tapes of live Hornsby with Kimock and it’s VERY good stuff. Actually my favorite version of Scarlet Begonias is a live version that Bruce did with Kimock and Lesh…Steve TEARS IT UP in that version.

Steve Kimmock is an accomplished musician who is proficient at playing his instrument. I’ve never heard him play anything of any interest to me, though.
