The 2008 National Football League Thread

Easy there, feller. I’m not saying you’re wrong about being excited in something different for your team. I’m stating my opinion that Brady Quinn is terrible and was overrated in college. Cheer for whatever the heck you want. I’m not one to judge.

LOL

when I say “El Bastarddddddee,” I always roll the R’s really hard like a mexican.

Yees, well the name was eenspired by a character een a Lobo comeec that talked like thees so eet eezn’t that unusual to do so.

And not a bad night for The Messiah…err, I mean Brady Quinn. Of course, it might help to see him throw a pass for more than 15 yards before I anoint him as the Next Coming. I’d say he’s only at the Left Hand of the Lord right now. It’ll maybe take another game or two before he takes the place of Charlie Weis at the Right Hand of the Lord.

Of course, I think we could gather all the folks here at OKP and put together a team and score 30 points on that Denver defense. Holy crap are they bad.

I don’t care if Brad Childress somehow takes us to the NFC Championship game, if we don’t beat the Packers today, he should be fired the day after the season ends.

0-5 against the Packers up to this point, and 0-6 would be completely unacceptable. Fuckin’ Packers. Hate 'em!

Big win, Colts. Big win!

Right in the thick of the AFC Wild Card.

Aww…how nice of Chilly to pick up the win in the disasterous NFC North. Can’t count out those Vikings.

And let’s be fair…you CAN’T be serious about wanting Tice instead of Childress. Keep in mind that Tice was there with both Culpepper AND Moss and with that nice run game and couldn’t do a thing because he couldn’t field an even remotely competent defense. In just a few years, Childress has turned that D around, has a solid O-Line and a good run game. I don’t like his conservative coaching but if you give him Culpepper and Moss in their primes, he’d be putting up numbers like Tice did too…AND winning more games.

And nice of Peterson to lobby his coach hard to go for it on fourth down and then promptly fumble the ball on the play. Then he lobbied his coach to challenge it which they lost and cost them a timeout. Apparently, Chilly just needs to stop listening to his running back.

And what the heck were the Packers doing on that final drive? They’re on the 40 with a minute to go and they call two runs in a row for maybe 3 yards total? They were calling plays like they were on the 25! Then the 3rd down play was that lame pass that went nowhere and sure enough Crosby pulls the field goal that might have gone through had then gotten a little closer. That play-calling was baffling.

3 in a row!

missed the game though. twas driving across teh state. just saw the papers though.

go fins!

And we had two of my favorite coaches last night, each living up to their disastrous reputations:

-First you had Jauron doing exactly what the Packers did against the Vikings last week. Once they got into field goal range, they immediately went conservative and started running the ball. The only problem was they were only in range for a 47 yarder!!? Both McCarthy and Jauron both seemed perfectly happy to settle for a LONG field goal and didn’t seem to want to pass the ball to get another ten yards when they both had plenty of time to do it. (And both kicks may have been good had they been closer). Yes, I understand Jauron wanted to kill the clock to give Cleveland less time for a comeback but wouldn’t you rather be sure you can MAKE the kick BEFORE you try to kill clock? Since when is a 45+ kick considered a sure thing? (Well, except for Jason Hanson). Leave it to Jauron to go conservative.

-On the other side of the ball you had Crennel who actually wasn’t that bad. Though, much like I have a crusade against coaches punting the ball in opposing territory, I really have an issue with the “poonch kick.” What purpose does it serve? Does it EVER work? Why do coaches do it? Who the heck came up with it and why does everyone use it? Cleveland handed Buffalo the ball on their own 40 and it took them ONE play to get into field goal range with a simple pass up the middle. Even had there been 15-seconds left when Cleveland “poonch kicked” Buffalo STILL could have completed that pass and gotten the field goal off!! It’s not even useful when there’s barely any time left!!..giving a team the ball on the 40 even makes you vulnerable to a hail mary in the endzone. Seriously, it’s the DUMBEST tactic I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen SO many comebacks start with a team handing the opponent the ball on the 40. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

And Brady Quinn SCREAMS Joey Harrington. No passes more than 20 yards and ridiculous incompletions that aren’t even CLOSE. And yet he has that Harrington quality where he shows signs of brilliance so he’ll stick around as the starter for years. Good luck, browns.

Okay with 6 games left to go in the regular season here is my prediction for the 6 spots in the AFC for the playoffs. NFC will come latenight tomorrow.

#1 Seed–Tennessee–they have a 3 game lead up on anyone in the AFC virtually guaranteeing themselves the top spot in the conference. Mark my words though. TENNESSEE WILL NOT WIN THE SUPERBOWL…THEY WON’T EVEN MAKE IT TO THE SUPERBOWL.

#2 Seed–NY Jets–This spot could just as easily be New England’s. It’s whoever wins this division. New England and the Jets have such cupcake schedules that the Jets should end up with at least 11 wins (maybe 12) and the Patriots should end up at least 10 wins maybe 11.

#3 Seed–Steelers–They will win the North and secure the #3 Seed. I think this is the best team in the AFC. Not necessarily right now, but they will be. There schedule is still tough as nails so I don’t see them getting that 2 seed competing with the AFC East soft schedule.

#4 Seed–Broncos–Broncos have a 2 game lead over SD with 6 to go. SD and Denver play in San Diego play on the last game of the year in SD, but I just don’t know if the Chargers have it in them. I see no passion in them. The second worst coach in football is on there sidelines. (great o-coordinator just no head coach)

#5 Seed–Indy–Colts have some softies on there schedule as well that should virtually assure them 10 wins, but they also have to go to SD this weekend, go to Jacksonville and play Tennesee again. Not a given, but I see the Colts as the 5 seed.

#6 Seed-New England–I see NE squeaking in (see above for 2 seed). I think they’ll finish the season with the same record as the Colts and the Colts have the tie breaker with them. Now if NE ends up winning the division…then I see the NY Jets with the 5 seed and the Colts with the 6 seed.

Thanks for playing Baltimore (tough schedule), Miami (impressed, but not there year to make playoffs), Jacksonville (6 losses already), Buffalo (the ship is sinking), Cleveland (already 6 losses).

Just my outlook on the AFC…I’ll do the NFC latenight tomorrow.

On to the NFC

#1 Seed–NY Giants–Is there really any question as to who the #1 seed is going to be…Yes actually there is as the Giants remaining schedule is still brutal. So they could very well end up with the 2 seed, but I see them holding down this spot.

#2 Seed–Carolina–Sitting at 8-2 they just keep winning. Not winning pretty that’s for sure…Delhomme has been a wreck the past couple of weeks. If he keeps performing like this the Cats are in trouble come playoff time.

#3 Seed–Arizona–Warner just keeps throwing for 300 yards every week. That division is also the worst in football.

#4 Seed–Green Bay–I see Green Bay winning out over Minnesota and Chicago…Chicago is in trouble…Orton isn’t healthy and Grossman sucks…Minnesota is about to lose their 2 DTs to a banned substance…Plus they have no QB

#5 Seed–Tampa Bay–They are playing solid and could steal either a 2 or 3 seed if they outlast Carolina. I don’t see it happening, but they could.

#6 Seed–Dallas–Just too much talent not to make a run.

Thanks for playing: Washington (played their best football already), Atlanta (showed promise, but the NFC is stacked), Phillly (you can’t tie Cincy), Minnesota (sorry Frerrote and banned substances spell your doom), Chicago (surprising start, but doesn’t look good from here on out).

this is the part where the Dolphins sweep the Patriots.

I hope the Vikings lose the rest of their games, and even with that opinion, I still consider myself a true fan. Its the only sure-fire way to get Chilly FIRED!

What? No “thanks for playing” to the Lions who only a few games away from the Perfect Season? Come on, now. And why not Chicago to win the NFC North. From what I’ve seen they’re the only team without any really major flaws unlike the rest of the division. The Pack can’t run the ball and their defense is very suspect, The Vikes have Frerotte who will eventually kill them and a wimpy coach (though give Chilly credit…he’s been going for it on 4th down lately. Good for him). Orton’s actually been solid for the Bears, the run game is good and while the defense isn’t as good as past years, it’s still solid. Watch out for them Bears to lose at home to the Cardinals in the first round.

Anyone else intrigued about “GOEAGLES” in our league? He hasn’t showed up to change his team or do anything since maybe week 2 or 3 and the dude is still tied for second…imagine if he had actually showed up. Even worse, he’s committing an absolute crime by having Kurt Warner sitting on his bench ALL year. That’s right…the highest scoring fantasy player in the league is rotting on this dude’s bench. I tried making 2-1 and 3-1 trades to this guy for Warner early in the year and even sent him a few e-mails and I still got nothing from him. He should be arrested for that travesty against fantasy sports. Poor Kurt Warner…

And Big-B’s going down this week. I get revenge!!!

GhostsofWayneFontes blog had a nice post on this exact topic today!

Tomorrow’s games are awful! The best one of the three is on the NFL Network. And even that one is kind of shitty.

That’s the spirit Neil.
