The ending of some of the longer phish songs are intriguing to me, and part of the fun of listening how the jam progresses is wondering when the theme will return and the song will end.
Some of my favorites are stash, david bowie, split open and melt, bathtub gin, wolfman’s
Of course, sometimes the jam strays and either ends or segues into anther song.
But, which one gives you the most chills?
For me it’s stash!! I love the ending of that song.
Also, the guitar strumming trey goes into right before they break back into the quirky theme of Soamelt.
Any others I’m forgetting?
What is your favorite ending to a phish song? (Among the generally longer tunes,
you know what I mean–like golgi and straight forward jams like julius and possum don’t count)
The first one that comes to my mind is Maze.
They go back to the lyric section (you’ll never get… youll never get out of the maze… of the maze…) and then the quick little 5 note finish like you successfully got out of the maze.
SOAMelt and Bowie both have great endings where they seem to climb and climb and climb and climb.
A DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOG!!!
The end of divided sky is pretty solidly scripted but it just ties the song together so well…
How about Page’s solo at the end of squirming coil… prolly the best ending I know of besides vocal jams on yem.
oh yeah, Maze is a sweet ending. The last (you’ll never get… youll never get out of the maze… of the maze…) is longer than the first two. The cool thing about maze is the song ACTUALLY MAKES U FEEL LIKE YOUR IN A MAZE! (sorry, I had to do that and be cheesy)
Divided Sky and Harpua–nice choices. Page’s solo during the end of divided sky can sometimes be bland and not stand out, but when it does it is beautiful!
willbreathes–that’s a cool observation about how the end of maze seems like you escaped from the maze! I’ve never thought of it like that. Wow–I’m going to think about that every time I listen to maze now.
foam!!!..the entertainer theme
yeah coil is great with page and i love the ending to bowie
“Slave” always seems to have a nice ending jam where Trey can rip it up. For a particularly awe-inspiring version, simply hear the 12-7-97 version to see what I mean. I think that is the best “Slave” ever played.
I always love the return to the theme in Chalkdust after a crazy long jam.
Stash is the greatest of all Phish tunes to my ears and the ecstatic musical orgasm of the ending is just one ingredient in a very successful recipe.
Another great ending is Hood. I was listening to the Sugarbush 95 version the other day and after minutes of jamming I could sense exactly when the vocals would reappear, and of course joined in. I felt very good about hood that day.
I like Sparkle. Totally cool.
My vote is for Coil as well.
I could always count on them playing that at
Deer Creek. Such a great ending to a show there.
Page just standing up and saying goodnight after playing the most beautiful music.
Man,…I’m tearing up just thinking about it.
Walking back to the campsite after that was like heaven.
the short crisp hood ending. nothing better.
antelope!
Cavern!
When Trey would do the feedback routine for a solid 2-3 minutes after. See UB40’s new avatar if you don’t know what I’m talking about.
I can’t believe no one has said Bowie yet…All I thought as soon as I saw this thread is, “Everyone’s just going to say Bowie”…guess I was wrong…Those last 4 strums…DAVID BOWE…now that is sweet.
I believe I mentioned it in the second post on this thread…
Oh…Sorry mang…didn’t mean to step on no ones toes here…do you want me to delete my comment?..You have some good sense to you man…Where’s my DVD?..
Here’s one…YEM…it ends with a vocal jam for christ sake
Theme…the big buildup out of the jam and then they quickly move to the overlapping chorus. Cool stuff.
