–AC/DC Bag. I’ve developed a new love for this ending after hearing the one show from '00 where Trey plays with the theme and leads a jam on it before heading into another song.
–Stash. I agree to this, fellows. MAYBE SO AND MAYBE NOT
–Reba. Whistling or not, there was always that moment or two when you held your breath…
–The Lizards. Love that ending theme melody…
oh come on…FLUFFHEAD!! the guitar solo at the end is always spectacular.
I also like the end of Bowie.
The ending jam of David Bowie, so high energy and a perfect end to an improved out jam. Also some Reba’s endings are the best music Phish has ever put togetehr IMO. You all know the Reba’s i’m talking about, incredible finishes.
definately forbins right before it goes into mockingbird, i love that part
or mikes song
i guess more of the return to the theme, but when trey just hits that chord i just go fucking beserk
(you guys know what im talking about)
I don’t know. There are so many. But one song that does that for me is “I Didn’t Know”. When Fish ends his vacuum solo and the team hits the corus again. I love it. Plus that’s what makes it a great sing-along song.
Chalkdust all the way!
Though I must say that usually the best way to end a Phish song is with the beginning of another Phish song…
bathtub gin…i love when trey brings back the main riff in the end after an extended jam
I gotta agree with Rastabilly that the best ending to a Phish song is “->”
But I guess that’s a cop-out. Hood always leaves me feeling so light and cheerful. Of course Chaldust rips. Of course Antelope has a great climactic ending. YEM ends in so many different ways…but one of my favorite endings has got to be the recently discussed ending to Tube where they drop back into some heavy funk for a few more bars.
How 'bout any time “Secret Smile”, “Velvet Sea” or “Jennifer Dances” ends?
I was gonna go there, but thought I’d better not stir up any controversy…
but since you have, you might as well add “Friday” to that list
haha… nice.
the short crisp hood ending. nothing better.
I agree that the short hood ending, where they sometimes screamed “I feel good” or “you can feel good” or simply, “feel good!” was infinitely preferable to me than the drawn out instrumental fade out.
Did anyone happen to read anything from the band as to why this change was made to hood?
Esther! C’mon. You know!
i love the jam on the end of the lizards…especially like from IT…it is so crisp and clean
Stash is definitely the best song ending-wise, but in anthemic signature moments, YEM takes the cake in my book.
“Did anyone happen to read anything from the band as to why this change was made to hood?” ----
I have wondered that also, although I haven’t read any interview on why the change was made. By the way, when was it changed? I know in 95 they had the short ending.
My best guess on why they changed the ending is it is just the progression of the song. They probably just thought it was a good way to wind down the jam after it peaks with the “you can feel good.” The more “jammy” the band was, the more they were inclined to draw things out. Plus, I think other songs have changed in composition over the years, although I can’t think of any.
i just really never understood it though. the crisp ending was just…cool.
yeah i always dug those three notes trey plays right before the theme comes back.
i cant believe nobody mentioned down w/ disease!!!
it never really “ends” persay (sp?) they usually jam it out, unless ur talking about early versions…and those endings are kinda lame IMO
concerning the rifftowards the end…yes thats a good one, but technically not the ending, but merely the beginning of a usually excellent jam vehicle
