The bus came by and I got on...

…okay maybe an inappropriate title for this thread. Has this situation made the news down in the States? This is definately the biggest news story in Canada at this point, and for like the last week.

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. - Shocked passengers aboard a Greyhound bus in Manitoba said the attack was incomprehensible.

One moment, the quiet man near the back of the bus was minding his own business.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, hadn’t talked to anyone around him, and seemed to pay no attention to the younger fellow sitting next to him, who was listening to music on headphones.

The next moment, witnesses said, the older man stood up, still quiet, and repeatedly stabbed then beheaded his seat-mate with a large hunting knife.

“We heard this blood-curdling scream and turned around, and the guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly, like 40 or 50 times,” Garnet Caton said Thursday from a hotel in Brandon, Man., where he and other passengers had been taken to rest.

“There was no rage or anything. He was like a robot, stabbing the guy.”

Caton said the bus stopped and everyone scrambled to get out while the attacker started methodically carving up the victim’s body, not paying attention to anyone else.

Caton and the driver shut the bus door from the outside while they waited for police to arrive.

“We put our bodies up against the door, waiting for him to come out … and he went back and brought the head to the front and pretty much displayed it … and dropped it on the ground in front of us,” Caton said.

“All very calmly. He was wearing sunglasses. It was no big deal to him.”

Fellow passenger Cody Olmstead from Kentville, N.S., also recalled the chilling scene.

“The guy came to the front of the door with buddy’s head in his hands, decapitated. He dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body back up,” Olmstead told Brandon radio station CKLQ.

Both men said the attacker and the victim appeared not to know each other.

They said the attacker boarded the bus in Brandon Wednesday night. The victim, who Caton said appeared to be about 19, had been on the bus since Edmonton.

Police didn’t confirm details, saying only that a homicide occurred on the bus, which stopped about 15 kilometres west of Portage la Prairie.

One man was taken into custody after Mounties surrounded the vehicle.

Federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day said the full weight of the law must be brought to bear on the perpetrator.

“We want to make sure the process is followed as aggressively as possible, the full legal process …” Day said from Levis, Que., where Conservative MPs are gathered for a summer planning session.

“This particular incident, as horrific as it is, is obviously extremely rare. Certainly the horrific nature of it is probably one-of-a-kind in Canadian history.”

Greyhound called the event tragic but isolated.

A company spokeswoman said bus travel is the safest mode of transportation, despite the fact bus stations do not have metal detectors and other security measures used at airports.

“Due to the rural nature of our network, airport-type security is not practical. It’s a very different type of system,” Abby Wambaugh said from Greyhound’s corporate offices in Texas.

The bus was carrying 37 passengers and the driver to Winnipeg from Edmonton.

A portion of the east-bound Trans-Canada Highway was closed overnight as officers remained on the scene.

Passengers were unable to understand what might have prompted the attack. The suspect had been on the bus for only about an hour and didn’t even sit near his victim at first.

“He sat in the front at first, everything was normal,” Caton said.

"We went to the next stop and he got off and had a smoke with another young lady there. When he got on the bus again, he came to the back near where I was sitting.

“He put his bags in the overhead compartment. He didn’t say a word to anybody. He seemed totally normal. About a half an hour later, we heard this blood-curdling scream.”

Pretty fucking twisted.

When it first happened it was on the news and interwebs, but I haven’t seen much on it since.

But I was pretty creeped out after reading about it. I may never take public transportation ever again. Not that I do anyway, but still.

haha yeah nice thread title, mr. insensitive.

its still getting some news play here in Fargo, since Winnipeg is somewhat close. I’ve seen video of the guy…just a normal looking middle-aged asian man.

pretty gruesome story…ugh I actually get chills thinking about it.

why didn’t anyone stop that motherfucker though!! pussies. I’m sure the kid was already dead after a few punctures, but just letting him get fucking beheaded?? cripes.

yeah that is a bizzare story heard about it a few days back, he gutted the guy too, like he was going to take some meat or something

I can’t imagine having that happen in front of you, i think i’d faint. plus it’d make me super seriously late for my important business meetings.

Not only that, but a police radio report leaked to the internet went something like this…
“Suspect walks back to victim, appears to be eating the flesh…”
He was eating the guy…

He appeared in court today and said “please kill me.”

^ that’s pretty messed up, but I kinda still want to hear it. Does anyone know where?

It seems there are all sorts going on on Canadian Greyhound buses.

That’s the audio for it

Greyhound better come up with some suave PR

^^ That’s pretty chilling.

Thread of the year!

standing ovation

This world is one F’d up place.

Can I choose a different planet yet?

Almost more disturbing is how, yet again, there was a ton of bystanders yet no one even tried to stop the guy. Good job, people.

I have less faith in the folks who stood and watched than I do in the killer.

Stevo

^ Ask yourself this? Would you have tried to stop him? Seriously? There are blood and guts all over the place, would you be able to react sanely? I think I just would have curled up in a fetal position and started crying.

The bus driver got everyone off the bus and locked this maniac inside. I don’t know how he was able to react with such a clear head when this was going on. I’m not sure if there is much anyone without a bigger machete could have done.

Although I can say that if I were in the position of the person being attacked, I would have loved for someone to help me or stop the guy.

However, I can’t honestly say that as a bystander I would have jumped in. There’s just no way. Most people’s natural instinct is to run the other direction. Only a small few are wired differently.

Oh Stevo, once again a post without informing yourself.

If you read the news reports, you would have learned that the bus driver and 2 other men DID try to stop him.
When they attempted to disarm this man wielding a very large hunting/Rambo knife, who was acting every way but sane, the man started slashing at them and advancing toward them, to which they exited & blocked the door of the bus so to protect everyone else.

I think they acted admirably given the INSANE circumstances.
This is anything but an average attack on someone.

I’ve found people to come to the rescue of fellow humans more and more lately, but when something like this happens the first job of the driver is to get everyone off the bus to safety, THEN to assess the situation.
This poor guy was dead pretty quick from what I understand.

*That police audio is nuts.
So calm describing the situation. Crazy.

I don’t know if I could have just stood and watched. That’s crazy. How can you even live with yourself if you don’t try to help him?

Now, if the guy had already been stabbed 50 times and he had cut the dude’s head halfway off already I probably would have just let the dude finish the job. No point in risking things then.

But seriously…it’s an ENTIRE BUS of people and not one of them try to stop it. If one guy would go to him, you know other people who try to back him up…a whole crowd working together could subdue one guy easily…and it’s not like he had a gun…it’s just a knife. I dunno…just seems weird to me.

Stevo

From the way I read the story, by the time the rest of the bus realized what was happening… it was too late.

Locking him on the bus seems like the most reasonable response to me.

And you thought this story couldn’t get any worse.

WINNIPEG - Someone claiming to be a sister of the young man stabbed and beheaded on a Greyhound bus in Manitoba last month has been trying to use the horrific killing to collect money.

The unidentified person posted messages on the Facebook social-networking site last week, claiming to be Tim McLean’s eldest sister, Amanda.

“I thank you all for your support of our family. It has been hard to deal with, but life must go on,” one message read.

“If you would like to make a donation to help our family, we have set up a PayPal account to do so. Contact for more details.”

The impostor also contacted Ron Schinners, who had set up a tribute page to McLean, with a story of financial hardship. The family was having a hard time paying for all the funeral expenses, Schinners was told via instant messaging, and had to quit jobs to help each other through the ordeal.

Schinners was so moved by the story, he turned control of his Facebook tribute page over to the person he believed was the victim’s sister - despite never having met or talked to the person on the phone.

“I was doing it out of the kindness of my heart, but I was also being deceived and I felt really stupid,” Schinners said Tuesday from his home in Port Alberni, B.C.

The pleas for donations were on a handful of McLean tribute pages for a couple of days before people got suspicious. They pointed out the McLean family had already set up an account to accept donations at branches of TD-Canada Trust.

Schinners eventually heard from the real Amanda McLean. At the same time, someone reported the matter to the RCMP and the person posting as Amanda McLean was removed from Facebook, he said.

Manitoba RCMP would not confirm whether an investigation was underway, citing privacy laws.

McLean, a travelling carnival worker, was on his way home to Winnipeg from Edmonton on July 30 when he was attacked onboard the bus.

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton has been charged with second-degree murder. He is undergoing a psychiatric assessment and his next court date is set for Sept. 8.

Sick and twisted world.

Yep. There’s always some idiot trying to capitalize on something.

There were plenty of 9/11 scams as well.

You’ve got to wonder what goes through people’s heads sometimes.
