The Dead try to strongarm NPR

Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney fame tried to include some dead tunes on a mix she made for NPR, where she is now an on-air personality and content producer. I thought this was kinda interesting.

An interesting tidbit: This mix was supposed to have the Grateful Dead on it, whose music I really love, but they refused unless we promised to do a piece on them on All Things Considered. In addition, we would need to run a feature on The Dead on the site. Here’s a sentence I’ve never written: Someone needs to take a bong hit and chill out. Just a simple “no thanks” would have sufficed. Are The Dead really in need of publicity? Because I swear there’s a dancing bear sticker on every third car I see in Portland. And now I’ve written a paragraph on them anyway, for free, not even in exchange for a song. Doesn’t that count?!

Why do you think they would play hardball with NPR?

Because the people who run all the Dead related stuff are assholes.

That’s pretty weak imo.

The Grateful Dead is now the property of Sirius satellite radio!!!

what Portland does she live in?

when i was living there i found two Deadheads in the whole city and it was almost like we had to give some kind of secret handshake and speak in code if referencing them.

Awwwwwwwwwwww SNAP!

What kind of people would treat the public media that way???

Although PBS does play some Grateful Dead concerts occasionally.

I still love the subject line just because I get this image in my head of Jerry Garcia angrily pushing around some wimpy NPR reporter. Just hilarious.
