The Divided Stall

It’s great live doesn’t translate in recordings. Alpine trey had a huge friggin smile so it made it just wonderful.

It’s all about “building suspense”! “When’s the song going to start again? Do YOU know when it’ll start again? I don’t know when it’ll start again!? When they gonna start it again!? This is crazy!” Every good band keeps their fans in suspense for a little while.

Besides, they’re still jamming…it’s just a “silent jam”

Plus I my first Divided Sky was in Toronto in 1999…I think it’s the longest “stall” I’ve ever heard…seems like three or four full minutes at least but that’s probably me exaggerating…the crowd just went nuts the whole time.

There is no such thing as an empty space or an empty time. There is always something to see, something to hear. In fact, try as we may to make a silence, we cannot.

I think the pause in divided sky is a great time to experience space or the lack thereof. It’s a pretty special moment, and I do think that people not being aware of the subtle power of that moment, and not allowing themselves to experience it because they are talking ow whatever, is a little depressing. Everybody has their own experience, though.

Walking in the woods can be very spiritual & beautiful.

But I would hate to arrive at my seat for a Phish show to find the concert experience replaced by a quiet forest.

^I heard that’s what they’re gonna do next Halloween.

Wait… should this be in the rumours board?

of course, it’s all about the fans. someone’s always gotta be hollering or screaming or yelling or just being obnoxious. we don’t want to hear the music, and the band doesn’t want us to hear the music, they rather everyone be screaming all the time because reallly the fan is more important than the band or the fucking music. right?

don’t get me wrong, I often throw in a yelp or a whoo because I can’t help it the music is that good, and I’m sure some yelling does fuel the energy, butt yelling at a spot where they are obviously trying to silently jam, I mean cmon. show some respect. peace.

Eh…maybe it’s me but the crazy cheering during the silent jam is pretty sweet. Kind of like a mix of excitement over the fact that their actually playing Divided Sky, combined with just general appreciation for the band and the show so far, combined with the excitement over the rest of the song that’s upcoming, combined with anticipation over WHEN they actually restart the song. I love it…just pure adulation for the sake of it. No way would I want that silent. The crowd noise is perfect at that point.
