Meh. Taste is better.
Considering the jams are the same, and the structure of the songs, I’ll take this version. i just like the lyrics better. They make alot more sense when you hear all of them, and not just half of them like in taste
I love Fishman’s vocals so much. I’ll take this over Taste anyday actually…Don’t get me wrong a great Taste is better, but I think Fish singing gave Trey more of a chance to focus on his playing, which just made the song sound tighter. I agree with PHGuy that the lyrics are better in Fog than Taste as well. I always felt that it sounded a lot like a Who song as Fog, and that’s why Quadrophenia doesn’t come as much of a shock to me as the Ween '95 cover.
Fishman wasn’t a great singer back in the days of Fog…
just heard this. not sure the show, one from December 95. all i can say is it’s fucking sweet. taste was never my favorite song from the Billy Breathes material, but for some reason Fog That Surrounds seems that’s the way the song should’ve stayed.
i wonder why the boys decide to change some songs in minor ways that seem to really affect the final product. for example, i love the way they play Limb x Limb live, with the extra lyrics…why cut those from the studio recording? they’re beautiful and really complete the song.
a song i think really benefited from a structure chang was Tela. i love the newer ending, as i can’t get enough of those cascading, lightning quick licks of Trey’s. Waste is another good example of this style of soloing. anyway, i’m rambling. cheeri-o.
wow I always thought that people called this song by two names, when in fact they are actually two separate songs that one was derived from the other?
I always remember years ago me and a friend were kicking it, and I said to him “what is your favorite phish song?” and he replied, “fog that surrounds”
I think I more or less knew the song as taste, but his answer always suprises me when I think about that conversation. I mean, really, of allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the phish songs and you pick fog that surrounds?
just seems wierd, but different strokes for different folks I guess
I like taste much better. i don’t really like any 95 versions or any of the variations. They also made one call the taste that surrounds.
“The Fog That Surrounds”
that’s just a cool ass sounding title. if i were in a Phish tribute band, this is what i would want to name it. hell, i may just go ahead and use it for some future crappy rock band i’ll inevitably be in. who would know? sure, YOU would, but nobody else.

Listening to this now, it feels like the shift from Fog That Surrounds to Taste was a good idea. There was too much going on; you had Fish singing an entirely different piece of lyrics WHILE Trey was singing his lyrics. It would’ve been nice if, say, Trey repeated the first verse as Fish added in his lines there. Having two people sing two different sets of lyrics that haven’t shown up in the song yet is just… messy.
Been listening to this one from 10/17/95
I believe it was the last time played. Hearing it again for the first time in a while makes me realize how I like it better then Taste, which I sometimes have a hard time getting into
It must be Fish"s singing
