The Golden Talisman

As most of you who know me are aware, I’ve been a fairly successful Techno DJ & recording artist for the last 10 years, playing mostly around the Southwest. But a time has recently come in my life, where as I grow older as a composer as well as progress as a writer, that my taste have inevitably changed. Influenced by more of the Psychedelic Dub and Psybient styles of OTT, Younger Brother, & Bluetech, I have begun to use the artist name “Terry Vernixx” less and have geared more towards my GOLDEN TALISMAN project.
I am currently finishing up a full length album for release in 2010 of Gloden Talisman material. And I have begun to DJ under that name as well. I played my first festival up in Taos last month as GT. Last week, I DJed to a very enthusiatic crowd in Santa Fe.

Here is the Santa Fe DJ gig set for download:

I really think that if you are inclined to STS9, or other jamtronica sounds (or if you like good electronic music to get high to), you will dig this DJ mix set. Lots of swirling psychedelic dub and ambient downtempo in my set.

Let me know what you think of my new direction…

I will definitely check this out when I’m home and can download the set. Sounds like my kind of sound. Congrats on your progress, that’s cool that you’ve plotted a new course in your music.

thanks man! Full Circle for me, I knew eventually that making psychedelic music was going to come back in my future. To me, minimal techno was always inherently “psychedelic”, but in the last 3 years minimalism to me gave way to en entirely new style, sound, and vision.

I like to think about how styles evolve in any creative medium. In terms of minimal electronic music, I think the parallels to trance states are definitely a connection to psychedelia. It’s cool how what we call “techno” or “electronica” (very modern-age terms relating to machines and computers) are all connected to a very primative, tribal, ritualistic vein of music that’s been around since the dawn of time, or at least since the ancestors of man learned to bang wood or rocks together in some kind of rhythm.

…and now there is evidently UtUbE footage of some of my set:

Damn…it was a good night…strong chai, good nugs, and awesome Indian food.
Oh yeah, and I played…

Downloading the set now… from what I can hear on that vid it sounds really good. I really dig this already.

Dude, you should totally put your stuff up on http://www.thesixtyone.com.

cool…thanks for the link. I will check it out.

hope you dig the set…

Vern!! THIS SHIT IS TIGHT.

I’ve been digging this for the last half-hour, I really like the sound you have going here. Very chill, great beats , dude you are fuckin GOOD.

thanks man…really appreciate it!!! glad you are digging it.

Whenever people say they hate techno or electronic music (but they like jambands or equally inventive exploratory uniques musics), I always tell them they just haven’t heard the “right” artists. Shpongle, Younger Brother, OTT, Bluetech, Entheogenic, Koan, Shulmann…all making good organic psychedelia. With computers as well as instruments.

Right after I posted that bit I hit this piece with a very Indian / Middle Eastern vibe about midway through the set, I’ll have to go back and listen again but it was way tight.

I’m glad you mentioned Shpongle - I definitely heard his influence in your set, but I’m hesitant to mention that kind of thing sometimes. People don’t necessarily want to hear that their work reminded you of someone else’s, even though it’s a good thing and meant as a compliment. Are you into BT or Aphex at all? Cuz it sounds like it

Btw, speaking of computers + instruments, if you haven’t listened to Emancipator yet, I recommend checking out his stuff. http://www.emancipatormusic.com

Thanks again for sharing your music, I’d love to hear more anytime.

im going to check this out as well once i get home. i’m just getting into that kinda music. would you say this has any similarities to say, pretty lights or pnuma trio? i really dig PL, and one of my buddies is actually doing stuff quite like this in boston.

I’ll leave it to Vern to categorize his own work, but I’ll say this - I like both Pretty Lights and Pnuma Trio, and I also love me some Golden Talisman. :sunglasses:

Vern, your stuff is awesome.
I’ve followed your music on Myspace for some time, jeez,…years now.
You got rid of my favorite track (I think), but I’ve been digging Automatic Sky & Get Me High.

I think I like this stuff the best though, The Golden Talisman direction.
Being from Chicago, we get house music shoved down our throat.
But I like more of the psychedelic, trance, ambient stuff. (Sasha & Digweed)

I love this music when I’m coming down from “squeegeeing my third eye” as Bill Hicks would say.
Keep this coming Vern, and COME TO CHICAGO!

P.S.= I like Shpongle too!

vern this shit is DANK kids in my dorm are loving it… and the shpongle sample in there fucking blows my mind!!! i wanna hear more

thanks for all the positive feedback everyone! For those wondering or interested in my techno oriented sets, here’s a live set recorded on my radioshow a few weeks back:

sendspace.com/file/9lukbq

Straight up underground melodic TECHNO. Enjoy…

downloading now, while listening to the RUSKO mix i just dled…

will report back later once done.

Yo Terry, any chance of some other Golden Talisman sets being made available for download? If my copy of the first one was on vinyl, the needle would have worn right thru the record by now.

Also, do you have a PayPal account for donations / contributions? I’d like to dish some some cheddah your way, especially if you continue uploading more stuff for us fans. :sunglasses:

i downloaded this last night but just put it on this morning.

great music to start the day. i love the dub feel to it. i’ll have to check out some of those other artists you mentioned.

have you ever heard skream? i just recently got some of his stuff. that was the soundtrack to my knoxville trip.

thanks Jay and nanook of the north! Glad yer enjoying it. I will have a new mix up in November…I usually just record live sets, which I have lined up in November. I will also probably play a live set as Golden Talisman on my internet show on www.lowercasesounds.com soon. It’s a video DJ show on Saturday nights.
I’ve been wanting to do it live on the net. I’ll let you know when I have it scheduled…
