The Official 07-08 NCAA Basketball Thread

I thought Michigan St. was going to pull off the upset last night but UCLA looked really strong in the second half.

Syracuse plays Ohio St. tonight at 9:15 on one of the ESPN channels. Should be a good game. If they pull out a win they’ll most likely play Texas A&M Friday night at the same time/channel. Tons of good sports going on this weekend!

Let’s see how Purdue’s best recruiting class in 20+ years holds up tonight against #18 Clemson…their top big-man is out, so that’s a good sign!

Well, shit.

Purdue was leading Clemson basically all night until the final minute. Damn.

BUT I was definitely impressed with Purdue’s 4 freshmen…they showed poise and that they can go into a hostile environment against a ranked team and compete.

I see BIG things maybe not this year but next year and the year after.

Go Boilers!

(God the Big Ten gets dominated every year in the ACC/B10 challenge).

Ugh, Syracuse does NOT play defense…ever. They lost at home last night 107-100. Exciting to see so many points but they really need to hustle and get back on defense instead of playing for the crowd. Hopefully they learned their lesson last night.

Yes, that’s right: A player couldn’t make it back to the locker room so he pissed in some towels on the court.

Wow!

UMASS goes into the Carrier Dome and drops 107 on the Orange, then they go to IUPUI and get shut down.

Go Jaguars!

Well I’m heading to Indianapolis tomorrow for the Wooden Tradition.

John Wooden is possibly the most revered basketball figure in the state of Indiana. Only Larry Bird, Damon Bailey, and Rick Mount might rival him. Reggie Miller might be on that list too.

Purdue vs. Louisville
Butler vs. Florida State.

Should be some high-quality basketball!

Even though Louisville was missing some key players, it’s good to see Purdue hang on for the win. A definite resume builder (too bad they couldn’t hang on @ Clemson or @ Missouri) come March.

Cuonzo Martin!

well, things just got worse for the cuse. devendorf is out for the year with an acl injury. that puts two starters out for the season with acl injuries (rautins; over the summer). top that with josh wright supposedly skipping practices and leaving the team and we’re out another point guard. at least all the freshman will see an increase in their playing time and will hopefully be even better for next seasons final 4 push.

Well why didn’t I notice the B-Ball thread before. There’s been a number of great games that I’ve seen and it’s really difficult to tell who’s a really legit team. My MSU Spartans have done solid and their only lost was a close one to UCLA where we led the whole game. We’ve got three new hotshot freshman on the team and Izzo has been playing them a lot of minutes to get them used to the play…not to mentioned that he tweaked the offense completely to get the team running a lot so I think some of our games have been closer than they should be. The freshman are talented but very green…hopefully by midseason they’ll be pretty good. State will get another big test against Texas this Saturday which will be at the Palace where the Pistons play so I’ll definitely be there. I wish I knew where my seats were but I didn’t get them. Should be a good time…

Other things:

-So far I’d say Texas, UCLA, UNC, Georgetown, and Duke are the toughest teams I’ve seen…I’d include Pitt in there since they look good too but they ALWAYS choke in the tournament so I’m sour on them until they show otherwise…they’ve killed too many of my brackets for me to trust them anymore. And while we all know UNC is good, would kill them to…you know…actually PLAY someone good? To their credit, I suppose they expected a game against Kentucky to be more impressive but sadly Kentucky blows this year so it’s not that impressive. I can’t wait to see their wars with Duke this year.

-Also, can the media get off the love affair with Gonzaga? They lost both of the only remotely difficult games they played this year and have beaten a bunch of creampuffs for the rest of their schedule and yet they’re ranked 15th or something. Then they’re gonna disappear and go undefeated in their crappy division that no one sees so we’ll still have to deal with them being ranked all year.

-And you guys are right…preseason losses aside, the Big Ten BLOWS this year. Aside from the Spartans, the only team I’m even remotely worried about to get in MSU’s way is Indiana. The rest of the division looks pretty crappy though I was impressed with Purdue a bit against Louisville…maybe they’ll make things interesting. Of course, I’d be silly not to mention how horrible UofM has been. Way to lose to Western Kentucky, Harvard and Central Michigan, guys. HAHAHAHAH. (Though, I’ll be fair and that team is almost completely new from last year and they’ve played a number of brutal teams they have no business playing…but wow, are they green).

-Anyone else glad that the cocky Mr. OJ Mayo isn’t looking so hot at USC? That kid drove me nuts…nice to see the college game bring him down a bit. (Though he does play some nice D…I’ll give him that).

Lotsa BIG games this week. Undefeateds Duke vs Pitt on Thursday and the Super Sweet Georgetown vs Memphis game on Saturday (not to mention my Spartans against Texas). Should be a fun weekend.

Whether or not any of these teams are ranked, that is a ridiculous road schedule for the #1 team in the country to play over ~22 days. Especially considering they were only playing 8-9 guys the entire time. I can’t imagine ohio st or kentucky is an easy place to play but the RAQ? That place is so compact and gets so loud and I’m sure it was even worse when the #1 team in the country showed up.

^^Oh yeah, I’m looking forward to that Georgetown-Memphis game. It’ll be the first Memphis game I make it to this year.

Sowwy, Brett.

Purdue (10-4, 1-0 Big Ten) 34 31 65

Tobacco road is paved in gold this year. Now lets kill Clemson today!

What a game. the heels did everything they could to ,lose but Clemson would just not let us! Here comes undefeated!

Memphis could beat UNC.

Anyone can beat anyone! The question is will they?

I don’t think anyone could beat anyone.

There is not a whole lot of parity in NCAA basketball.

Ball State could play UNC (or Memphis, or UCLA) 10 times and would lose all 10 times.

Well they don’t do that so we’ll never know will we? You never know what can happen in a game. Some midget gets hot from the arc. A couple studs get in foul trouble early. Never say never!

I agree with that to an extent.

You could take some mid-level team from a mid-major conference (MAC, Horizon League, etc) and put them on the same floor as UCLA or Kansas and they might have a shot.

But the REAL bottom-feeders would have NO shot. EVER.
