The Official Grateful Dead Thread

is that the “beautiful jam”?

Keith’s pill problem made him lazy in 78’-early 79’…It actually starts in 77’…Go listen to Cornell, Keith is just following Jerry most of the time…Still a great show, but Keith was much better in 72’-74’…Phil said Jerry hated when Keith would follow his runs…

Brent was much better with Jerry, too bad his sound SUCKED!!!

That’s why I love Jeff in Furthur, he has Brents fury with Keiths sound…

No…That Jam is DS>Rat>DS, the show above is Rat Jam>DS Jam>Rat…

02-18-71 It’s in that Dark Star Reprise out of Wharf Rat…

I’m a fan of '85, and '89-'90. I can listen to just about anything from '66-'90. '90s are incredibly spotty. But then there is a gem like Vegas’94 which I listen to a ton.

“Fury” is the perfect word to describe Brent’s style. I’ve listened to very little Furthur. I only hear what they play on channel 32, and I only get to listen to satellite radio when I drive my sister’s car, which isn’t very often.

I love that Honky Tonk sound that Keith brought to the band back in '71/'72 and then he started get a bit more jazzy in '73/'74. After that he kind of wasn’t as important to the sound anymore, but you can’t deny his contributions to Terrapin Station and Shakedown Street are fairly significant to the overall vibe of those albums.

Furthur sucks ass, for real, been seeing these guys for years and gave them 7 chances, will not go back again, would much rather see Phish

Totally some great shows in 85-90 like Will said and there are still some gems in the 90’s

'74 4 lyphe

^^^I’m kind of surprised you say that. I have a few friends who are all into Furthur, but obviously none of them ever saw Jerry or even Phil and Friends or Ratdog too much. I’m sure I’d have a good time at any Furthur show, and I did see them in Portland last march and Phil’s 70th bday show in san fran, but I’m not in a position to go out of my way at all right now.

I hope Phil can keep going for many years though, no matter who he’s playing with. Phil is the man.

Throwing Stones is one of my favorite dead songs right now…it took me a while with that one

I would love to join this conversation… but I must go repair my epic post now… :lolno:

::quotes epic post in honor of it’s resurrection::

I’m kind of new to this, but I notice Bob has a lot of songs about uncles. And Texas. And Texan uncles.

The recent Phil lineup with Jackie Greene and Steve Molitz is quite possibly my favorite post-GD lineup.

But then there is The Q…

And Herring/Haynes…

And oh my…

I just don’t know.

Love me some Jackie Greene though.

definitely my favorite. jackie greene really brought a whole new dimension to p&f. plus, they were able to bring more bobby songs into the fold with jackie. the set that they played at all good in 2008 was the tits. ELEVATOR!!!

Seen almost 100 ratdog shows alone and in the fifties for phil and friends and would love for them to bring their old bands back
Don’t get me wrong I love going to shows and can still have a good time but the music isn’t as good as it was
I really feel this and the dead 09’ have been terrible

Just my opinion of course
I you are in to it more power to ya

Yes, that was greatness. I recently listened to that one again, and sent it to an old friend of my dads.

I was flying mighty high that night.

Yeah Dead tour last year seemed quite flat to me…I went to the Chicago shows and had fun but the music just seemed tired and a bit too slow on every song.

I’ll take Furthur over that I guess

I feel the exact way. I feel lucky that I got to see the Dead with Jerry about 30 times.
Further is kinda bullshit to me.

Those Vegas '94 shows were life-changing for me…

I enjoy most of the incarnations of Furthur/P+F, just because I take it as it is-- a great GD cover band. If you look at it that way, and you take it as an opportunity to relive great music with great friends, you can’t really go wrong. It’s nostalgic for sure, but it’s still fun, IMO.

The Greene/Molitz lineup is sweet. And the Page/Trey/Kimmock lineup wasn’t too shabby, either.

All that said, ain’t nothin’ gonna ever compare to the real thing. Jerry had something in hm that simply cannot be replicated.
