The Phish Biography

That sounds about right. I think it’s also included in the Danny Clinch photobook from Coventry.

just finished it last night. took me about 4 days to read. definetely a good read. a lot of stuff we already know, but i bunch we dont. didnt know about tensions between page and trey that were pretty bad. interesting to hear about the highs and lows, and of course the current triumphant return. very uplifting story. extra psyched about tonights msg show. see you there…

Just got mine in the mail today. I have to go to Texas for work next week, can’t wait to hide in my hotel room and read it.

Lots of cool stuff in here. About the Betty Ford Clinic. Rifts between band members. How Trey didn’t like SOTG cause it wasn’t cohesive (I agree). How Page built mad resentment up and got fucked up on coke during the Billy Breathes sessions. I didn’t realize Trey “cleaned up” for any length of time ever until now, mustn’t have been for long. And how summer '03 was “SOBER TOUR.” Ha!! Never would’ve thought that. Cause IT interviews and Vegas '04 was only like… 8 months later. That shit’s really bad for your respiratory system!! Lots of other cool stuff but this stuff came to mind first.

I haven’t read the biography yet… but is it really all about drugs and substances?

Jesus.

i thought drugs were a minor part of the book…they definetely touched on it though…

Well the Relix review says it doesn’t get too in depth with the drugs but you’ve obviously gotta mention some of. Bit surprised that Page was on coke but hey, it’s gotta be “rage side” for a reason, right? In the end, I still think they’re partaking in a bit of ganja even nowadays.

Still, I’ll wait until the band retires before I read their bio. They’re not done yet and it would just be incomplete. And it should be noted that the Phish Book isn’t a bio…it’s more of a snapshot of 1997 with lots of interviews on their music and few old events and the music process. Real good stuff and a great read.

^Page, Gordo and Fish could toke bowls but it’s still a no-no for Trey…He is serving 5 years Probation as of 2007 and is drug-tested as a result of that…If he slips up, it’s jail time…

I mean it’s not all about drugs, it’s a pretty thorough biography of the band, and drugs are a part of that. the conflict and drugs was the stuff that was really what was new to me so that’s what I mentioned. How the band members were feeling about the band and what they were doing at given times, and what a Phish tour was like for the band. it also talks a good deal about the crew and how pushy they got in asking for more money and tickets and stuff and how a lot of people brought backstage by employees contributed to the decline of the backstage scene in a lot of ways. How it got too hectic and too much to deal with, and how they struggled because Phish became a huge organization and they were spending lots of time in business meetings-wasn’t enough about the music anymore, and how that is a natural evolution of moving to bigger venues and how Trey was trying to please all the employees 'cause he’s such a pleaser and how that continued to push it downhill. the drugs and the stress from the size of the organization and amount of non-music complications are pretty much directly proportional. it’s definitely a must read if you’re as in to this band as most of us are.

ha… :problem:

The book is good…it repeats itself quite a bit throughout though. The drug stuff really doesn’t surprise me, but it is intersting to finally hear about it in detail. There are not many rockstars that don’t party like rockstars. Overall has been a good read, about 3/4 the way through.

I have not read the book but farmhouse was the begininng of what lead to the hiatus between mike and trey. In one corner was mike and page and in the other was trey and fishman. Trey has never had a problem surrendering to his own flow, but IMO the lowest points in Phishs career have been when
Trey has been “unopen” to input, especially from mike…Trey has always had a “God” “Rock Star” Complex that has been shown onstage during his end of show “star wars” antics with his guitar and the people up front who actually inspired such good shows!!! An example of treys spur of the moment , not taking into consideration the whole, especially mike, is when at 8 trey told everybody to sit down and mike asked are you sitting because you want to sit or are you sitting because of peer pressure? Just like the guiness book of world records meatstick dance trey has a tendency to make spur of the moment judgements considering nobody but himself and some kind of need to do something that will propel him into history books, like a concert of 80,000 never having all attendees sitting down, which I’m sure didn’t work so well when they busted into a rocking acoustic chalkdust. Problems between mike and trey have lead to the difference in me showing up or staying home or watching john bell sing the opening line to driving song and never looking back. Just my opinion of course. but i’d rather have jerry joseph miracle me into a panic show to see how a team works on a smoking hatfield than wonder if trey and mike are getting along.

^I think that Trey asked everyone to sit down because he felt pressure from whoever is shooting the video for 8…I don’t think that Trey went behind Mike’s back by asking everyone to sit down- it was not spur of the moment…the band knew he was going to ask

my personal connection with treys persona tells me there has been no complete sober tour. I’m sure that trey has been of suboxen or methadone for drug tests and is most likely on a drug called “vyvanse” at the moment, which would get him to legally pass his piss tests and keep him nice and loaded. Piss tests for opiates can tell whether the opiate is methadone, soboxen, heroin, morphine, and if he’s on a “regimented” methadone program it is unlikely that his piss tests would show the level of methadone meaning he could get as loaded on the stuff as possible and still pass tests. A junkie will find ways to stay loaded. the smart ones find ways and loopholes to do it legally. and a person in treys position should have no problem obtaining whatever he wants…what the books will never mention are the exact conditions of his probation. If southern california is a hotspot for federal activity at the moment, a festival located right there must be just because the band thought it was the best venue, right?..I know what I think, but it’s something to think about because trey had alot of shit to get out of and as the “leader” of basically a drug cult there was alot he could do without doing much at all except send out “SOS” signals such as donuts at noon. And to think trey wasn’t completely coked up 93-96 is rediculous. he finally sedated in 97…<this is all rumour and speculation with no basis for actual facts.

he didn’t go behind mikes back, he said it spur of the moment and within 5 minutes mike responded basically telling the crowd to make their own descian and finally at the end of chalkdust? trey told the audience to stand back up. broken arrow fo sho.

Chalkdust??

::wonders about some peoples state of mind::

I am having a hard time comprehending 78.2% of what he is saying.

Yeah, that is true, but it seems like Trey doesn’t WANT to use anymore. Using can still happen at that point but it’s much easier to stay off when you’ve been off for awhile and don’t want to get on drugs again. Just like you said, we don’t know the exact terms of his probation. But I know most probation won’t let you stay on painkillers for any amount of time. and vyvanse? Where’d you come up with that?? This is all vicious rumor type shit man. I don’t think Trey would be talking about his sobriety and spirituality if he was getting fucked up on prescription drugs. is this just what you think for some reason or do you have a reason to believe this stuff?

Someone leave an open bag of troll food on the counter overnight or something?

I’ve wondered if Trey was on some kind of something at this point too, but if he is then my guess is it’s part of his recovery process. Ritalin or marijuana coffee hard candies or viagra or triple antibiotic ointment.
