The Smoking Popes

was anybody else alive in '95?

did anybody else see Angus or Clueless and understand what good alternative rock is?

i recently unearthed an mp3 of this band playing a live version of “Need You Around” and everything came rushing back.

does anybody else recall this forgotten gem?

it was an album called “Born to Quit” that my brother had for a while but i never really got to listen to that much and now i want it but he lost it.

and now i can’t find it anywhere. Not isohunt, not even itunes or Borders or anything. I found a few copies on Amazon but i don’t trust Amazon. I think its out of print.

Does anybody here happen to have the ability to hook me up with a copy?

interesting trades available and i’d rather transact with you folks than the weirdos on Amazon.

I generally think of the 80s as a wretched time for music. I hate the production of 80s music…there’s just something…plastic and overly synthetic and ‘digital’ about the way it sounds. Compare the first Pixies album to the way ‘Bossanova’ sounds. The drums and bass sound like flat crap.

That said, the 80s are a great era for undiscovered underground/indie/alternative music. Reading ‘Our Band Could Be Your Life’ was a real eye opener for me.

Oh, sorry Jaw. Can’t help ya.

by the way everybody, we’re talking about the 90’s here.

not the 80’s, which indeed pretty much sucked aside from some Cure and U2.

the 80s was a fantastic time for music man…

doolittle, psychocandy, rain dogs, so many talking heads albums, violent femmes, sonic youth, swordfishtrombones, the sound, the meat puppets, joy division, so much good post-punk…i could go on

WHAT ABOUT THE SMOKING POPES?!?!?!

Right, but still. This is a matter of comparison. Compared to the 60s, 70s, 90s, or even the 00s so far, the 80s were a mixed bag. In all fairness, as I said, I’m not that familiar with a lot of 80s underground/indie music…

As for said Smoking Popes…I think their music is hard to find because it’s out of print and was mainly released on small labels that disappeared into the morass of the 90s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoking_Popes_discography. A few of their albums are available on iTunes, but they’re mostly compilations/live stuff. Also, they have a new album out!!

I found an mp3 of just that “Need You Around” song on isohunt…it’s part of one of those “Top 500 songs” torrents they have on there. But I supposed you already have that.

(By the way, anyone know of a good free software that converts all the songs on a CD to mp3s? The one I have doesn’t work right).

And frankly, I think the 80’s were a lot of fun…I’ve been kind of rediscovering a lot of old 80’s songs I used to like but forgot about. I mean the musical work ain’t that great but there’s some real “feel good” gems that you just can’t help but smile and bop your head to. Compared to the 90’s the 80’s are frickin Mozart…at least the 80’s had creativity.

Hello…you fool…I love you…

Stevo

greg, do you know Wipers? precursor to Sonic Youth…check out Youth of America. came out in 81 and it’s soooo fucking good. if you’re a SY fan you’ll really dig this i think.

The Wipers were amazing. Do you have that box set with all their stuff? I used to have it but it got stolen in the big heist of '02. What about Mission of Burma? Ever listen to them? Academy Fight Song! That’s When I Reach For My Revolver!

The '80’s kicked ass.

Okay…you can go back at it Jawbone. I’ve heard of the Smoking Popes, but I’ve never listened to them.

yeah, Mission to Burma is awesome. nah, don’t have their box set…would love to get my hands on it though!

so i’m guessing i was out of line here?

sigh

i suppose i’ll have to do this with amazon.

fuckers.

Hey, I tried man. I don’t think the album you want was on iTunes, though.

Yowza.

Maybe this doesn’t help, but you can find it used on Amazon for as little as $2.50.

I’m heading to a pawn shop to check some shit out at lunch. If by chance they have it, I will grab it for you, you fucker.

^thanks, dillweed.
