The Thread That Never Was

(I had this post all ready to go, in response to PHG’s thread about whether or not some particular post about DMB was out of line [for the record, the comment was out of line, just like all the other negative bullshit-talking some of you folks pitch, some of you folks who are mods and should know better]. I still feel this post, and topic, is relative, because it deals with a bigger issue: Moderating and how it’s done. And it seems the offending post was written by someone with mod capabilities as well? What kind of community are we in where the mods can’t agree? So, here it is, in all it’s splendor and glory, my original post…)

This is not a freedom of speech issue, and it is not a DMB-bashing issue. The real issue is consistency in moderating and tolerance, I mean real tolerance.

Freedom Of Speech: an inalienable right granted every US citizen…first, there’s no way FoS applies to the internet because it is bigger than a single country. Secondly, with freedom comes another big word you constitution wavers seem to conveniently forget at times like these, Responsibility. Take some goddamn responsibility for your actions, don’t justify stupidity with “Because I can.”

DMB-Bashing: Remember our little grammar lesson? Freedom, responsibility? Here’s another reminder, tolerance. Seriously, why do people bitch about PT and then act just like them? If you don’t like DMB (I happen to not like them) you can at least be respectful of the band, their hard work and the folks who do like them.

The Mods: You have a responsibility, you also have a thankless job. Mods typically are volunteers, which means they don’t get paid. As long as you are consistent in your policies and applications then I have no problem, but you must remain consistent.

If these mods have set standards of behavior as a contingency for participating in this community than you have to respect it, whether you like it or not. And the mods have an obligation to act with prudence and bipartisanship.

And to all you cryin bitches worried about your inalienable rights, pfft, Jog On.

I have also reposted my 2 cents here:

Anyhow, PHG, my thoughts to the thread you just deleted on the topic of what Greg said…

I will say only this…

Karma is a bitch and if Greg said that, man life’s a bitch dude… I am not sure there is anyone on the earth I would make that comment about… (I am sure there are some hated child abusers I would, but you get my point) There is a certain level of TACT and maturity some folks have and others do not… There is a difference between being immature and dumb (sometimes funny and irrelevant)and being plain hurtful and disrespectful…

I lost my Mother on Thanksgiving day years ago, and this week means a lot to me and I assume Leroi’s family will be missing him. They (DMB) meant no harm to anyone on here, and if you do not like their music speak your mind about the music, but unless he (Leroi) attacked you, what does his dying have to do with the DMB music??? Different things…

Like I recently heard on MPR, it is really easy to sit and type behind a name and keyboard while roasting or demeaning others in a harmful or disrespectful way… I am sure some of the shit posted all around the 'net would never be said in a face to face meeting…Or in general anyhow…

Bashing someone for music tastes is already off base for this site, as we are built off of liking music, regardless if it is Phish or not.

I think you did the right thing Hank, we do not need the PT BS in here, my opinion… That being said, I love this place and think it is a good time and a nice place to interact!

Lets just keep ripping dead folks out of the bashing of one another and lets make sure we do not give the MODS reason to delete stuff of that nature…

My 2cents.

We do (did?) have a policy of not deleting anything/making drastic changes without discussing it first in the mod board.

Which is what it is for.

I am sure I make my fair share of asshole comments, so I don’t want to take away the ability of someone else to make an ass of themselves.

And like it was said above, we don’t get paid… but donations are accepted ;D

BTW, thanks Spacecoyote for opening this thread…

wow, so that thread was deleted?

what tha Fooook is going on 'round here?

I didn’t delete the poll thread I started earlier. Not me this time~!

Maybe none of this ever happened?

You ever get the feeling you’re going crazy?

this is true, but more than likely (since I believe it happened on Saturday) I was the only mod online at the time. I wasn’t going to let that post sit on the board for a few hours just to wait for approval.

I have no idea what is going on here. I pieced the happenings together through some OKP sleuthing, but I can’t wait to hear the real story.

::Waits patiently for OKP History Lesson #3: Greg can be a real ass::

Spacecoyote, you’re right on about responsibility. The goderators shouldn’t have to do much because the rest of us are responsible enough to keep this place perfect.

I must have missed out on the poll, because when I clicked on the thread I got an error.

I personally don’t see what the big deal is. I think people should say whatever they want to. It was tactless, of course, but so what? Why was anyone that offended?

^I’m sorry to say this but that way of thinking is narrow-minded.

Just because you were not offended, or you can’t understand why anyone would be, or you think people should not be does not address the issue, nor does it absolve a person of the responsibility to act decent when decency is called for.

Free Speech may be an “inborn right” of every American, but it does not disqualify us from having common sense or feeling empathy towards others. Too often people forget that these rights were not actually bestowed upon us by some vengeful lightning-wielding deity, they were earned with blood. Which makes freedom of speech more of a privilege than a right, imo and all that jazz.

That argument might have some merit with me, had you not referred to 2 complete strangers as a “schemer” and a “cunt.”

^oh c’mon Neil that is way random to bring that up

the whole idea of that thread was a girlfriend being a bitch to one of our members. Leroi Moore never did anything to Greg.

Why is it random? He pleads for responsibility and decency while calling someone a cunt.

^the fact is, you’re attempting to change the subject by trying to bash spacecoyote’s credibility

^^ Plus, if you read the whole part you quoted from me I predicated the expletives with “If what you say is true…”. I was crass but I was not lynching anyone nor were my comments unprovoked. I relied on the facts as they were written to express my opinion. Crude, yes. Deliberate, yes. Taken out of context, most certainly yes.

I don’t think the post should have been deleted. I read the original post before it was deleted, and while it was in bad taste, I really didn’t think twice about it. I had forgotten about it until this whole thing was brought up. While I understand the mods have the right to delete anything they feel is inappropriate, all deleting it did was create this whole controversy, giving the post a lot more attention than it would have gotten if it was left alone.

That said, I agree with spacecoyote that we should take personal responsibility and not make posts like that. We don’t want to be PT.

I think everyone agrees that comments like the one Greg supposedly made are to garner a reaction and are immature, I still think when applauding ones death is your way of saying you dislike their band or music, that is about as senseless and immature as one can get…

This day and age there are certain boundaries one respectable individual person should stay with in, and I STRONGLY disagree about making light of a persons death… Poor taste and immature are the words that come to mind.

Ohh, and to relate this to name calling regardless of the words used (see notes above), is in no real way a comparison to applauding on a death out of disdain for their music… Come on, even my daughter can see those lines…

BUMP so Neil can explain himself…
