This American Phish

FYI, Richard Gehr is the author of The Phish Book
Wow, GREAT read. I always liked Gehr’s work.
I, being kind of a generally ignorant guy when it comes to things like nouns, am unfamiliar with the author and thought maybe this guy attended the MSG shows:

ill be the first to say i dont care for this article.
Hose, you ain’t the only one who thought that.
I didnt care too much for this either… relax people Phish will bring the type 2 jams back just let them get comfortable
Can’t seem to just delete my post, so… never mind
Thanks for posting, but save the anti-conservativism for CNN…don’t care for the way it is presented here in correlation with Phish.
^my feelings as well. phish is art well outside the realm of politics (thankfully)
I liked his book, but this article was less than intelligent. Keep politics away.
I dunno, interesting parallels. I commend the guy for that type of thinking.
It comes off as pretty cynical, and I’d be lying if I said some of those very same thoughts didn’t cross my mind. I do agree with some points that he makes.
It’s Phish, it always will be, but in a way…3.0 just wasn’t the same band. Sorry if that ruffles any feathers.
That was my thought as well. I don’t think Gehr is trying to insert politics into art, but is tracing the progress of two completely separate areas within the same timespan.
Interesting to say the least… ![]()
All im saying to “Phish isnt the same band” is that give them some time to evolve and i think the old Phish we knew will be back, but with a certain freshness to them… That is if they keep improving the way that they have.
Don’t be sorry. I like my feathers ruffled. If it were the same band, wouldn’t it get boring? Remember what happened to the Grateful Dead when the 80’s started? Less freeform, very tame, uninspiring, too formal. But the Dead eventually revved it back up in the late 80’s till 1990 (when Brent died, to me that was the end of the Dead). Bands ebb and flow. We will see another peak! What I can say is that Phish 3.0 is still much better that the Dead from 1980-1984! It would be wonderful if Phish would get back into the studio as soon as possible and concentrate on writing new material. I am just so happy to have my band back! Whatever they do, I’ll be there…Happy Holidays.
My feathers are ruffled…Did you mean to type 2.0 instead of 3.0? It seems you put 3.0 in the past tense. Isn’t 3.0 still going? Just trying to clarify what you mean. I’m so so positive about this band right now.
Uh what about the Reagan Years Mr. Gehr…They even have a song for that era dude.

Haha I’m listening to Portland show and ruminating.
RE: this… I don’t think anyone said Phish wasn’t any good anymore… just different in 3.0, doesn’t that go without saying? of course they’re different, 5 years have passed. Some of my favorite jams or moments in songs or shows have come in 3.0… listening to them now has this kind of appreciation for them and pride in how far they come, hearing everything that’s come before and how they’re synthesizing that into who they are now, playing honestly and from the heart. Not even necessarily trying to be who they used to be, just being who they are now, and giving it their all, you know?
Thats what I took away from it, in large part. Sure, he wrote some things that may look negative, but you can be honest about something and still love it… even love it more because of that honesty. Interesting that he mentioned the ‘less intimate’ feeling, like Doojer mentioned after 8, too. I can see where that’s coming from - and again, I can acknowledge that or think about it and still feel the most love for their music that i ever have. MORE love because of that knowledge.
And the parts about “improvisational reserve” I can see, too… I felt the same way at times, but they’ve really surprised me over and over, and I still appreciate when they overcome that reserve and really explore. I do think it’ll become more frequent in time, like H.Bill said. To me, that’s not criticizing what they’re doing now, it’s having the hope and confidence in their potential, wanting to see them reach the heights you know they can, for their own sake as well as for ours.
And really, “Please let down your guard and head for the invisible landscapes of your most experimental collective improvisations, Mr. Anastasio” is an idea I can get behind 100%.
I am a fan of his skill for sure. It takes a well-seasoned writer to put something like this out on paper. I also love how he has really does his research, dropping names of songs and usig lyrical puns (i.e. “Time isn’t elastic”). However, like Neil said, he ruffled my feathers a bit. Mixing the whole 2009 political spectrum with a jam band is highly ambitious, and I don’t think it should ever be done. On the contrary, he makes a few good points and ruffled my feathers in sort of a “super fan” sorta way. He messed with something I love. He screwed with my brother/sister-like relationship with MY band. “You can’t talk about Phish because I like them more than you do! HA-HA! SO THERE!”
If look outside yourself for moment, outside your “super fan” status, you can see that this guy isn’t really so bad. In fact, he’s pretty damn good! In a very Christopher Hitchens-like way! You hate to admit it, but in some ways he’s right.
NANNY NANNY BOO BOO!
