Three out of four ain't bad: Rothbury Report

Hearing Yonder Mountain with Fishman was freakin’ sweet. Seeing Trey’s solo set was even better. When Mike joined Trey up on stage tho, we freaked. They played tight all things considered and I swear Trey seemed a little choked up when Mike came out. And not only did they JAM, they broke two new tunes that Trey had been working on with Tom. One of them, Alaska, is going to be phenomenal if, as Trey put it, “They can find a drummer and keyboard player to join them.”

As expected, Trey returned the favor and joined Mike up on stage during his set and busted out some serious guitar work. It would have been the highlight of the festival…

Except then Fish came out and joined them!! They busted out an amazing rendition of She Said She Said by the Beatles. Absolutely unreal.

Considering that Fishman played on Friday, I don’t think anyone SERIOUSLY expected him to hang around for another two days to play again. You want to talk about adding fuel to the fire? There’s an inferno blazing under that chili pot right now!

Thanks for that post man. That paraphrase from Trey is exactly what this chili needs. Just a dash of reunion hint quotes.

How was Trey’s performance overall?

And what’s with all this chili talk? I missed the original joke. I guess it’s better to ask than to just join in without knowing what it even means.

When Mike was ending and telling everyone who was playing, he said, Trey, Jon Fishman…

paused…

and then he yelled, “PHISH” and smiled really big!!!

I’m worried about Trey’s Doc though. I hope they found it.

Mike and Trey playing “Meat” together was fucking sick. I ran into Hank who took me to meet Thom during “Meat”.

I also ran into Brett and Big B. It was a pleasure finally meeting all of you in person.

Trey’s set was awesome. Driver, Waste, Back on the Train, Sample In A Jar, Wading in the Velvet Sea…

Alaska’s fucking awesome! And the song that was a birthday letter from Tom to Trey was very touching. Before he played it, he was like “so I was asleep on the bus coming in, and woke up in a town that was called Whitehall!” He started laughing and was like, “That was a very scary and weird moment, and after 18 months I didn’t want to end up back there” or something like that. And then he said something like, “this is for all you people out there that know what I’m talking about and are there with me”

The words to the song are just beautiful. And the line that goes “But now I’m soaring way too high” means a lot.

That sounds about right.

:-*

oh yeah I’m an idiot, I thought that song all 3 of them played was a new one from Mike, but I now remember someone telling me it was the Beatles.

Yeah I didn’t expect Fish to stay around Saturday and Sunday either…thats why I really only expected Mike/Trey combos.

and yes, Alaska was VERY cool. Mike/Trey also jammed nicely during Chalkdust.

^^^and Mike wasn’t yelling “PHISH,” Justin. He was just introducing Fishman, calling him “Fish.”

at least thats how I took it

I felt like one of 5 people who knew it was She said She said when they started playing it. That made me feel old. But i loved it and danced. That made me feel young!

It is sort of hard to believe that Revolver is FORTY-TWO years old.

But still great nonetheless.

I’m pretty sure he said “Jon Fishman” first, then paused, and yelled, “PHISH!”

I really love She Said She Said. I’ve got a great version of Mule doing it at Mountain Jam this year.

Fishman was definitely a treat! Very unexpected.

"When Mike was ending and telling everyone who was playing, he said, Trey, Jon Fishman…

i just watched it on youtube and it he points at trey and says “trey”, then himself and says “me” and then fishman and says “fish”

yeah that was SWEET. great crowd reaction.

it looked so weird to me to see trey playin a strat and mike’s guitarist playing a 'doc during a phish tune. i know paul sells them now and all that, but it just looks strange seeing someone else play one especially when they’re playing with members of phish. i guess that guitar was part of the phish/trey mystique. for the longest time, only one person used one. but don’t worry, i’m sure i’ll get over it soon enough.

^^Shit. I guess I was wrong. Oh well. That’s what me and a couple friends thought. I knew everyone called Fishman ‘Fish’, but I thought he had already said his name.

Hey, can you post that link?

i did a momentary look and didnt see it off hand, it was one of the first vids put up and linked on phantasytour.com, but now pt is too dang slow to search. ill keep looking later and post it.

k i found it

you dont see him put at fish but he introduces everyone in the band and you see him point at trey and he says “trey” and then himself and he says “me”, then the camera lowers and you hear him say “(ph)fish”. since he introduced everyone except fishman its reasonable to assume that thats what hes doing

Wait, you mean it’s just a joke? There’s never going to be any actual chili?

I’m with you there. I wasn’t born when Revolver came out, but I’m a huge Beatles freak (got a tattoo of John Lennon on my arm). I was blown away by how many people didn’ know the song.

Similar experience the night before during DMB. A lot of people looked pretty perplexed when they played Sledgehammer, which I thought kicked much ass.

for a good long while, she said she said was THE beatles tune for me. it was just so driving and ahead of it’s time. it’s sad because i killed it for myself. had trey and mike played it 10 years ago i woulda lost ma cool. now it’s more like, oh that’s nice.

on that note, i loved that trey was playing both Dig a Pony and I am the Walrus with his band for a while. i was lucky enough to see both live and it was damn cool.

i sold my old piano for the rent
i loaded up on bugspray
and i found my daddy’s tent

Yes Scott Murawski has been playing a 'Doc for a while (saw him with Mike and Ramble Dove at 'Roo in 2006)…as far as I know, he’s the only other real musician in “the scene” playing one.
