This looked like one helluva GREAT way to start the summer tour.

I listened to the stream last night. I was impressed with their playing!
Observations:
First set seemed really solid. Very little “out there jamming” (gone are the days, I think, of starting the show with 20 minute Chalkdusts) but great song selection. Glad to hear Beauty back, and I hope that they continue to keep that one in, cause it’s a great tune! My only wish is that they had ended the set with a typical set 1 ender (Bowie, Antelope, etc) however, it’s kind of cool that they didn’t end that way, too.
Second set was hot. I loved that they let go and none of the jams seemed like they were cut short. Placement of “If I Could” was good, in my opinion, and the jamming in Carini, Ghost, Boogie On was great. It really seemed like Trey was calmed down a bit and letting things happen naturally. There was also lots of teased by Trey, and the Buried Alive reprise also brought it in and made it one of those Phish experiences that’s unique.
Speculation:
I suspect that they made a conscious effort to listen to the fans about set 1 vs set 2. There was a huge different between the two, and I felt like set two had a good flow to it (aspects of jamming, a slower tune, and some party mixed in, too). It just seemed like they wanted to make sure this was a unique show, and I think they hit the nail on the head. They definitely spent time talking about calming down and playing together instead of one person being in charge.
Also, Page is on FIRE
Great tour opener!
^great comments!
My friend thought the first set was much better. I thought Trey got kind of detached, or just uber-relaxed in the second half. Page and Mike just dominated. In a good way!
Also, I wonder why they didn’t sing at the end of “If I Could”?
… and “Quinn” got kinda botched, in the ending structure there I think.
And what’s up with that Buried Alive! reprise? I kinda felt like things started coming off the rails a little at the end there. I had the same feeling at the Manchester show 10/26/10 at the end, with that segue fest and the Llama reprise.
I’m not complaining though, freaking cool show. Can’t wait to listen to it properly; we had very muddy sound where we were.
Interesting ^ I’ll have to check out the AUD to hear how it sounded in the room!
Coming off the rails = phish operating at full capacity. For 4 people to be able to sync their insanity like that with 10k+ people watching is great.
About the sound. It sounded terrible. The PA they are using is total crap and it was not even remotely hung properly. Did you notice the slapback? Unless you were standing directly in front of the PA there was an echo. Thats because those speakers are designed to play stadiums for U2 and Elton John. Total crap. I’m sad that they chose that sound vendor as I simply don’t have the urge to see them as much.
The band themselves were great last night though. They were all hot and giving each other room to play which was really nice to see…
