time machine...

so…you have a time machine…you get to go back in time and see three bands…who would they be?

besides the obvious answer “phish” i’d go with …

  1. Talking heads

  2. Grateful Dead

  3. ? ? ?

i thought and thought and still couldnt figure out who the third would be…

so what are your guys’ picks?

  1. Jimi Hendrix
  2. Zeppelin - early years…maybe that first American tour in '69(?)
  3. The Doors

Neat question.

  1. The Beatles
  2. The Grateful Dead
  3. Creedence Clearwater Revival

1- Duke Ellington Orchestra at the Cotton Club (circa 1938).
2- Charlie Parker Quartet at the Three Dueces (with a young Miles Davis).
3- Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew band.

Beatles
pink floyd pre 79
grateful dead 72 tour

  1. 1969 Grateful Dead (a. 1972)
  2. The Doors
  3. Pink Floyd (Syd/Pre-Darkside era)

Oh wait… Unfortunately… Cross out my number 3 Pink Floyd… Replace that with the original line up of the Mothers of Invention… Ya… That’s better.

  1. The Grateful Dead (any era really, perhaps an acid test show).
  2. Miles Davis
    3.Phish (remember i wasnt born untill 1988).
Honorable Mention: I couldnt leave off Jimi Hendrix

Will…you and I neeeeed to meet. We are of LIKE MINDS, brother.

;D

I would want to see pink floyd when they were playing all of dark side most of wish you were here stuff that would eventually become animals (you’ gotta be crazy and raving and drooling) and close the show with echoes.

I do love their Animal tour… My buddy has some bootleg he bought off Ebay… it starts off with the entire Animals and Wish You Were Here albums, just in mixed up order (especially considering pigs on the wing pt 2 is before 1…) and then they finished it up with Money, Echoes, and Careful with that Axe Eugene… What a flippin’ show!

Frank Zappa
Santana
Funkadelic

  1. Miles Davis, anytime from 72 to his ‘hiatus’
  2. Pink Floyd, either during Syd’s time or between ‘Echoes’ and ‘Animals’
  3. this is tough…but I’d say the Velvet Underground during tours for their first two albums.

I would have loved to have seen the first two Velvets tours.

I have an older friend who saw The Velvets in 1969 in a little bar in Dallas called The End. He said it was the loudest thing he’d ever heard. Maureen was standing there bashing her drums, Lou was thrashing the guitar, and Sterling was playing a cacophony of notes. He said it blew his teenage mind… He quit listening to psychedelic music and went out and bought first The Stooges album, all The Velvets albums, Mother of Invention, and Beefheart, etc…

Poster from aforementioned gig…

  1. Pink Floyd–“DSOTM” tour
  2. early Dire Straits, w/John Illsley & Pick Withers
  3. Led Zep, '75-'77

dire straits, eh?

interesting choice…

Django Rheinhardt (any arrangement)
Charlie Parker w/ Miles Davis
Legion Of Mary

  1. Led Zeppelin
  2. Grateful Dead (anywhere between 72’-77’)
  3. Jimi Hendrix
  1. Blind Melon
  2. Miles circa 1964-65
  3. Grateful Dead circa 1972ish

The Who in the early 70’s!
Grateful Dead in late 70’s!
