Time Turns Elastic

not sure where this belongs, but have you guys heard Trey’s “Time Turns Elastic”? I really am likin’ it right now, and have only listened to it twice so far. What do you guys think?

here’s the phishthought’s link of the song:

I think Trey’s singing sounds GAY (straining) in the live recording from Nashville. Not impressed AT ALL!!!

^Yeah I thought that too while I was there. Great music though.

They just released this I think.

Maybe “GAY” isn’t the correct word… but I think I know what you mean, and I am never really a fan of Trey singing. His “talk-singing” is much better.

I thought he was singing just fine until around '98 or so, loved Trey’s vocals in the early days. When he’s just excited and smiling and enunciating, he just delivers a straight-up honest to God perfect vocal. My big beef with the singing is how scraggly and weak his singing got, just a tired sound. Flubbing lyrics constantly, all that stuff.

Hampton’s an interesting study on his vocals, cuz it’s sorta like old-school Trey singing, but with signs of difficulty. I thought he was great on remembering words, but was a little tired-sounding. The excitement of the event could do that. The first night was particularly rougher than the other two in the Trey’s voice dept.

Now, is Time Turns Elastic only one tune? Or is that a title track to a larger work?

its the first thing.

I haven’t listened to it since last fall, but I remember I didn’t like Trey’s singing either. I agree that Trey’s vocals are best when he’s “talk-singing”.

Anybody think Phish will play it this summer? I do.

so he says.

Yeah me and some guy were speculating about them playing it while we were in the smoker area at the ryman.

this could get interesting.

^The smoker area at the Ryman was packed! That shit was ridiculous!

But yeah, the singing kind of ruined the whole idea of the piece for me. I guess when I hear “orchestral piece”, I don’t normally think of any sort of singing. That is usually referred to as opera. It’s a shame too, because the music is so good.

Do you know how I got these scars?

the singing isn’t great but who cares thats a great song, the guitar if freakin awesome. I don’t think the singing is as “gay” as it is in other songs like all of these dreams. He kind of just cuts out or gets real quite when he gets to a note he can’t hit (which is what i would prefer) unlike in all of these dreams when he says “up on that hill” or “mountain nearby”.

Agreed.

any chance trey lets page sing it??? might be more in his range than trey’s… cuz it definitely sounds like trey is straining to hit some of those notes

lol.

::Some two-bit whack-job. Wears a cheap purple suit and make-up. He’s not the problem. He’s a nobody.::

anyone know of any recordings being circulated? i’ve tried etreeing it, but that site just isn’t the greatest with specific searches sometimes…

usually for a show like that wait till noon the day after and check for the torrent on the first page with 500 leeches

I think that any vocal challenges Trey has on the demo can be easily compensated for by harmonizing in certain areas and assigning certain parts to other band members. I hadnt had a chance to hear this until now, and wow, yeah the man’s still a fucking genius, huh?

I for one would be very excited to see the boys open this one up.

^ im pumped about this too. another phish epic has been a long time coming, and this looks to be the one. hell if trey can fill up 15 min. on an acoustic demo, THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES!
