This is still one of the most fun times I’ve had musically in ages, what a brilliant idea from the band to play on the 1st, zero pressure on them after NYE (which wa kick-ass) and I truly think the Setlist and Music reflect how carefree and happy they were…Seriusly, take a look at that Setlist for a moment, it’s freakin seck!!

The sbd recordings start after Funky Bitch has been run through but where it picks up contains some of the best jamming from 1998 and beyond. This ~22 minute jam is top notch as is the ~13 minute straight up jam a couple songs later. The band is very playful in this soundcheck and, as expected, it get quite goofy towards the end.
Easily one of the best soundchecks they’ve done along with big cypress and the limbo soundcheck from Italy the summer of 1997.

Started to listen for the first time since it happened. First set of day one is a rough one to get through, especially as Trey starts addressing the audience at the end. He sounds so bad.

OH yes. I’ll never forget that. I was at home, Saturday morning 3/7/09, downloaded the show without knowing ANY of the setlist … grabbed my first coffee and hit play, and just got so damn giddy. I’m STILL psyched they opened that show w/Fluffhead.

For some reason I thought today was the highly touted show from MI but apparently that was from 12-06. I know Will was one of the big pushers for that being their best 2 set show ever. I decided to give 12-05 a listen anyways since I’ve probably only heard it a couple times…and truly, as I was looking over the setlist they drop right into a Ghost to kick it off and they’re all so good from this tour I couldn’t possibly turn it off. This show took place in Cleveland so I’m guessing it was Will’s first show? What I’m really trying to say is, cheers Will!

Phish’s first public performance since Coventry on August 15, 2004 started with Fluffhead, a song not played since prior to the first hiatus on September 29, 2000 (70 shows). Also of note, several large, white balloons were hung in a circle around the coliseum, lit up by an additional central lighting rig; the balloons (save for a few casualties) would remain for the entire run. Trey introduced Fish as “Dad” during I Didn’t Know. Train Song was not played since May 23, 2000 (111 shows) and Grind was not played since December 30, 1998 (181 shows). During Bouncing, some of the balloons were dripped into the crowd. This show featured the Phish debut of Backwards Down the Number Line. YEM featured a false start possibly as a nod to the January 3, 2003 restarted version.
^ I was just out of college when they announced these shows. I was elated, that’s for sure, but I was living with three (occasionally four) other dudes, working part time at a Subway, even selling some of my more expensive possessions to make ends meet. This was the “leanest” year of my life. It did not occur to me for a second to go to these shows.
I do remember checking Etree about once every 15 minutes after the show so I could listen to a pretty bad AUD. I still have that AUD saved on an external. I might have teared up in my room when Divided Sky came on. I full on cried when I heard it about three months later at Alpine. A show I wouldn’t have been able to see if my sister didn’t pay for my ticket, and my roommate wasn’t able to drive me the 150 miles from Normal, Il.
