How come when people talk about great versions of “Stash” no one mentions the Island Tour version? I mean, they do, just not often enough for my liking.
Start talking about it more, people. It’s good.

^ I am not a big fan of the Island Tour ‘Stash’.
Although I admire the risk-taking, it just never goes anywhere to my ears.
‘Twist’ on the other hand… :o

***During which someone with a backpack jumps onstage, runs across stage, and is chased by Pete Carini.
^Which starts out with Fishman saying “The game is don’t let Carini get you – it’s okay to jump onstage as long as Carini doesn’t get you – don’t attack the drummer” and includes a chant throughout of “Carini’s gonna get ya”; during which the lights go out and a glowstick war ensues.
^^Pete Carini is brought on stage.

Encore: Harry Hood, Cavern
Show Notes: This show, a benefit for The Flynn Theatre, featured many debuts, including Scent of a Mule, If I Could, Wolfman’s Brother, Julius, I Wanna Be Like You, and the full Down with Disease. The show kicked off with one a cappella line of My Hometown. Buried Alive through Suzy Greenberg featured The Giant Country Horns: Mike Gallick on baritone sax, Carl “Geerz” Gerhard on trumpet, Dave “The Truth” Grippo on alto sax, Don Glasgo on trombone, Chris Peterman on tenor sax, and Joseph Somerville, Jr., on trumpet. Cavern, which contained the old, alternate lyrics, also featured Gerhard. Magilla (first since March 25, 1993, or 72 shows) was played slightly differently than most versions, with more of a shuffle beat. Listen as Trey updated the crowd on the scores of the NCAA tournament games.

Show Notes: Also Sprach was unfinished. Brother (first since November 30, 1996, or 89 shows) included a brief Dave’s Energy Guide tease and was followed by a short instrumental reprise, which was announced as the “radio-friendly version.” Trey contrasted this with the normal version, which was deemed un-radio-friendly due to its length. Ghost, which Trey jokingly remarked was also not radio-friendly because it is long and slow, included a Can’t Turn You Loose tease. The lights were turned off during Also Sprach as the crowd engaged in another Glowstick War.

Set II: Rocky Top, Stash > The Lizards, The Sloth, Dinner and a Movie > Harry Hood, I Didn’t Know, My Sweet One, Good Times Bad Times
Encore: Fee, The Oh Kee Pa Ceremony > Suzy Greenberg
Show Notes: Reba contained a brief, subtle tease of the “I Love Lucy” theme. After Lizards, Trey congratulated the audience (“A lot of people have tried, but you’re the first to have done it!”) for clapping on the beat during the slow end solo. Before Fee, he repeated the compliment: “I hope you didn’t think I was making fun of you … clapping on the upbeat --wow!” This venue became the Roseland Theater soon after; Phish was possibly the last band to play this venue while it was still called ‘Starry Night.’

Set II: Down with Disease, Ya Mar -> Prince Caspian > Maze -> Shafty* -> Possum^ -> Jam -> Cavern^^
Encore: Bold as Love#
Show Notes: The second set was one fairly uninterrupted jam that segued in and out of the listed songs. The funky jam inbetween Possum and Cavern featured some stage banter from Trey about the funk jams the band had been playing. Accordingly, Cavern was played in a slower, funkier manner than usual. The song also included some of the older, alternate lyrics. Oh Kee Pa was played for the first time since March 1, 1997 (69 shows).
Additional Notes:
Aftershow PA music: Theme from The Godfather.
*First time played; shares most lyrics with “Oblivious Fool.”
^With funked-out jam during which Trey said “This is for all those that came down wanting to dance” and “we’re gonna funk it out”.
^^Funky version; with Trey strutting around on stage during the heavy funk; includes older lyrics (“turned the blade back on the bitch, and dropped her in the dung”).
#Apparently, they were under a lot of pressure to finish up the deadline/curfew, and even considered not playing an encore at all.

Show Notes: Uncle Pen was played, according to Trey, “with all due respect to Bill Monroe.” It was also explained at this show that All Things Reconsidered is a variation on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. YEM included a Sunshine of Your Love tease segment and the vocal jam centered on a “rolling” theme, including the quote “Rolling on the River” from Proud Mary. It also included quotes from the theme to “Rawhide.” My Sweet One was announced by Trey as being written by the third greatest songwriter of all time while Fishman took a bow of recognition. Memories and Sweet Adeline were performed without microphones.

Notes: Fenton Williams (Dave Matthews Band crew) was at the light board in place of Chris Kuroda. “Girls” is a Jay-Z cover (first time played); with Jen Hartswick assisting on vocals. “Secret Smile” featured a wholly new arrangement (about 7 minutes long). “Sally” led loosely into a vocal jam akin to the kind found in 1980s versions, then a vocal jam around the song “Coconut” (Harry Nilsson song, from his 1971 album “Nilsson Schmilsson”), then into a rap by Trey about Fish’s sonic dress (which was not played), and then into a free-form vocal jam.

Encore: HYHU > If I Only Had a Brain, Good Times Bad Times
Show Notes: Magilla featured Paul Guinness of Ryth McFeud on trombone. The Crew Football Theme Song at this show was a demented version of Barracuda played over the drumbeat for My Sweet One, with Trey mincingly whining the “Crew football theme song!” lyrics. Brain was performed as a “special treat” for the audience. Fish sang the final verse through the vacuum, creating an excellent echo effect.

Notes: Fenton Williams (Dave Matthews Band crew) was at the light board in place of Chris Kuroda. Toward the end of “Wilson,” Trey teased “Little Drummer Boy.” “Love You” featured the debut of Fish’s Sonic Dress. The fabric of the dress is woven from audiotape taken from Fish’s own collection, and Jon uses special tape-head gloves to “play” it. (Some said it sounded much like Fish playing a washboard under his dress.)

Show Notes: My Friend included an Ob La Di, Ob La Da tease. BBJ featured Trey on drums and Fishman on vacuum. During BBFCFM, Trey forgot he was supposed to start part of the song, and there was quite a bit of silence on stage until he finally realized that the rest of the band was waiting for him. BBFCFM also included some humorous additional lyrics from Mike, who echoed a fan’s cry that he could “smell [himself] running.” YEM included teases of the closing jam to I Wish. Antelope included Random Note and Simpsons Signals.

Set II: Meatstick, Pebbles and Marbles > Prince Caspian -> Simple > Friday, Ghost, You Enjoy Myself -> Tweezer Reprise
Encore: Wolfman’s Brother, The Squirming Coil
Notes: Fenton Williams (Dave Matthews Band crew) was at the light board in place of Chris Kuroda. “Meatstick” included Trey and Mike removing their instruments to do the full dance as usual, and the Japanese lyrics were sung. This “YEM” might better be called “You Enjoy My Meatstick”: After the trampolines segment, Trey took off his guitar to do the Meatsick Dance while Fish played a drum solo. The crowd erupted in the Meatstick chant. Trey then did the Dance two more times (first while Mike soloed on the bass, and then Page on the keys). There was no standard vocal jam. “Wolfman’s” had teases of “Sneakin’ Sally,” "Possum, and “Meatstick.” The “Tweezer Reprise” lyrics were replaced by alternate “Meatstick” lines (“time for the Meatstick”; “won’t you step into the Meatstick”).

Encore: Contact, Big Black Furry Creature from Mars
Show Notes: This was a free outdoor show at Stanford. Possum included a Simpsons Signal, and Antelope included Frere Jacques teases. Harry Hood contained a Linus and Lucy tease from Peanuts; this theme was briefly reprised at the beginning of Contact. Avenu Malkenu included a “Happy Passover” bass solo from Mike. The encore featured special guest Cameron McKinney on ukulele (unmiced). McKinney, seven years old at the time, also had the honor of counting off BBFCFM. It should be noted that the infamous “squirt gun breaks” during this show are in reference to a security guard cooling off the audience with a Super Soaker, and not the band shooting each other. Manteca was played for the first time since March 16, 1991 (126 shows).

Encore: Amazing Grace, Rocky Top
Show Notes: During the section of I Didn’t Know where Fishman usually does some sort of solo, Page asked everyone who had been there the night before how they liked the encore. Trey and Mike put their microphones in the same position as they were for BBFCFM, and Page brought people on stage to give testimonials about how they felt about it. Special guests included Brad Sands and Chris Kuroda. Trey admitted his guilt in the mishap and the song continued. Horse included an extended intro section. Mike’s song included a melodic Low Rider jam before segueing into Ya Mar.

A fire alarm sounded as Fluffhead moved into Fluff’s Travels, which caused the building to be evacuated. When the band retook the stage, they started up a humorous pass at You Shook Me All Night Long and then dove back into Fluff’s Travels. Fire was dedicated to the “brave men” who turned off the fire alarm.

Weekapaug contained a Happy Birthday tease and dedication from Trey, as well as a Linus and Lucy tease from Mike.
