Today in Phishtory!

Uhm guys, I was joking, since I’m currently doing that?? Y’know, in my Fall 97 thread??

^What?

So…um…yeah…

A GREAT 2 night run at the Coliseum…

11-21-97 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA

1: Emotional Rescue*-> Split Open and Melt, Beauty of My Dreams, Dogs Stole Things, Punch You in the Eye-> Lawn Boy, Chalk Dust Torture, Prince Caspian^

11-22-97 Hampton Coliseum, Hampton, VA

2: Halley’s Comet*-> Tweezer > Black Eyed Katy > Piper > Run Like an Antelope**

E: Bouncing Around The Room, Tweezer Reprise

*Before they started the set, the crowd chanted the beginning of “Destiny Unbound” (in hopes that the band would play it). Trey acknowledged the chant by saying that he couldn’t hear what was being sung; that it sounded like some kind of “death chant”; and asked if this was the point in the show where they do the human sacrifice. No “Destiny Unbound” was played or teased. **With “Mike-O-Esquandolas” (instead of “Marco”).

I’ll be listening to these today and tomorrow for sure!

It’s depressing to think that:

a) Their “greatest tour” ocurred 9 years ago
b) Phish’s best music, at the very least, is 6-8 years behind them
(IMO, people will say 92-96 or even earlier, but I don’t like that era as much)

I wish I was 10 years older.

This Bowie is definately a Top 3 in my books…in fact, if no one objects…maybe I could post this as the Show of the Week this week…You guys will love this Bowie.

11-21-95 Lawrence Joel Coliseum, Winston Salem, NC

1: Fee, Chalk Dust Torture, Prince Caspian, The Divided Sky, Long Journey Home*, I’m Blue I’m Lonesome*, Guyute, My Friend My Friend, Dog Faced Boy, Runaway Jim

E: Good Times Bad Times

*Acoustic. **First time played.

I have no objections.

I would love to hear/review a show I have not already heard.

12-06-97 The Palace, Auburn Hills, MI

Soundcheck: Dog Log, AC/DC Bag, Ginseng Sullivan, Black-Eyed Katy

1: Golgi Apparatus, Run Like an Antelope, Train Song, Bathtub Gin-> Foam, Sample in a Jar, Fee, Maze, Cavern

2: Tweezer* -> Izabella** -> Twist -> Piper -> Sleeping Monkey -> Tweezer Reprise

E: Rocky Top

*Trey teases the music from the the segue that comes out of “1983…(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)” (Jimi Hendrix). *With the start/stop funk jam that repeatedly surfaced during the Fall Tour

With all the glory surrounding the following night, this show tends to get overlooked sometimes. I had as much or more fun at this show than in Dayton. This is one of my favorite second sets in all of phistory!

Of course, if you’re not into the whole mind-numbing, face-melting, mind left body experience, it may not be for you

best. tour. ever.

“Golgi” just kicked in as I am typing this. I’ve heard this show before, but it’s been several months I think.

I am going to pay close attention to this entire show and see where it ranks among my Fall '97 favorites, or even my all-time favorites.

Seacrest out.

it’s all about tweezerbella!!

and the slow intro to twist, whoooo

and the old school piper, mmmmmmmmmmmmm

^^^Great show, but this one owns it!

12/06/96 (Fri) Aladdin Theater - Las Vegas, NV

Set 1: Wilson, Peaches en Regalia, Poor Heart, Also Sprach Zarathustra > Llama, You Enjoy Myself, Cars Trucks and Buses, Down with Disease > Frankenstein,

Set 2: Julius, Sparkle, Mike’s Song > Simple > Jam, Harry Hood > Weekapaug Groove, Sweet Adeline*, Good Times Bad Times, Harpua** > Suzie Greenberg***,

Comment: *A capella. **Most of Harpua had Les Claypool and Larry LaLonde from Primus. After the opening, Les did a rap about a weed or something like that. Then more Harpua and the Jimmy story (Jimmy and Poster Nutbag going to Vegas). They stop and camp. At teh campsite, they start yodelling, at which point John McEuen and Heather and Anamiekl August did a country/yodel tune. The story continues, Jimmy and Poster meet up with four Elvis’on the edge of Las Vegas and have a duel. The four Elvis’s sing the first few verses of “Suspicious Minds” and then Fishman continues. Jimmy is victorious. Then the dog/cat fight. Harpua wins and the song finishes. At some point everyone returns and then Brian Mantia, the drummer for Primus, shows up for “Suzie Greenberg.” ***With “Suzie Q” jam lead by one of the Elvis’s. Set 1: 74 minutes. Set 2: 120 minutes.

12-11-95 Cumberland County Civic Center, Portland, ME

E: While My Guitar Gently Weeps**

#Trey explains that they are supposedly making an album of a bunch of "Dog Log"s and they need the audience to help make different versions. *Lounge-lizard style, along with high pitched screaming on command. ^In thanks to audience for helping with the “Dog Log” album. **With Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers Band) on guitar.

It was freezing that night… I showed up by myself and went into Gritty McDuffs to drink a few homw brews before the show and ran into a group of friends I saw some shows with that summer. Cheers and jeers and beers were had and we walked to the show. I had some fungi spread it around.

Was sitting fishman side not too far from the stage… band comes out and fish is ancy pantsy drumming on his seat while everyone gets settled. Trey starts up mfmf and were off… The song jams hard and gets even harder as we shift into hahaha… I was sucked in at this point and loving it.

They roar into stash and my smile grew even larger… at the beginning of the jam segment Trey points to the back of the arena ala Bath Ruth as to say “this ones for you” or “it going outta the park”… then proceeded to tear it up.

Caspian follows and I don’t remember too much from that but once again with a huge smile as Reba starts… then the dog log stuff… this was great. Perfect placement as we were already split open at this popint and the funny banter made for an excellent break… then they tore our heads open with the fastest, most blistering, absloutely perfect llama I ever heard… it was like a tornando… then more banter and a tube and McGrupp… the Julius and cavern were hot and was such a rocking way to end the set…

This first set blew my rocks offf… 2nd set was great as well but the kicker was Warren Haynes… this show was so hot.

Afterwards we went back to Grittys and I remember a first timer phish goer just sitting there staring wide eyed with a grin plastered to his face unable to really say anything… I leaned into his ear and said “phish was hot tonight” … which was true… It was fun to see phish blow this guys mind… such a great show. Anyway 11 years ago today.

'sup Goldphish! That’s awesome that you were at that show. Totally legendary. I’ve had a tape of that show for years.

And today we have … 12-12-1995! That’s the fall '95 show I got.

Let’s see…

Setlist:

^hahaah yes I was there too… ugh… I think I tuned out the entire show from yamar on…

Just pretend I’m posting 12/11, 12/12, and 12/13. The three New York fall '97 tour closing shows are all pretty great.

^^^yah, they’re ok, i guess, kinda meh though, don’t you think?

Of all the LP releases, to me, this one ranks somewhere in the middle. I do love that “Tweezer -> Timber -> Tweezer,” though (as well as everything after!). Also, FOUR years ago, Phish performed 2 songs on SNL. They also appeared in 1 skit and a TV Funhouse. I remember seeing them and thinking “I can’t WAIT until summer gets here.”

12-14-95 Broome County Arena, Binghamton, NY

1: Suzy Greenberg, Llama, Horn, Foam, Makisupa Policeman, Split Open and Melt, Tela, Fog That Surrounds, My Sweet One, Frankenstein

2: The Curtain-> Tweezer-> Timber (Jerry)-> Tweezer, Keyboard Army, Halley’s Comet*-> NICU#> Slave to the Traffic Light

E: Bold as Love

*With a very un-“Halley’s”-like jam into “NICU.” #Returned to jam that came out of “Halley’s” before heading into “Slave.”

somewhere in the middle?? I definitely put this show in my top five of the 20 LP releases. Lets see…I might put Halloween 96, 8.26.89, 6.22.94, 12.29.94 and maybe 11.17.97 above it.

At the absolute best, it is 7th or 8th. I don’t have 3 of them, though, bringing the total down to 17 (not counting the PH releases, NYE '95, Island Tour, etc).

i was mad sick for this show.
i had a 101 degree fever and was throwing up in the bus station beforehand.
but, i rocked out solo, with abouit 5 layers of clothing on!
a

You automatically elevate a show a couple notches for a “Foam” showing. It’s in the rulebook.

I don’t agree to that, and I really like Foam. Foam does not make a show for me in the least.
