If I recall correctly, the beginning of this “YEM” is botched HORRIBLY. And I mean BAD. But Trey makes up for it (I guess) with some high-energy yelling during BMGS.

1/3/03 Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, Virginia

Set 1 (1:15): Tweezer -> Theme From the Bottom, Foam, Pebbles and Marbles*, You Enjoy Myself**

Set 2 (1:11): Birds of a Feather, Wolfman’s Brother, Makisupa Policeman***, Axilla, Twist -> Free, All of These Dreams#, Possum##

Encore (0:08): Contact###, Tweezer Reprise

Notes: Show began at 8:13pm. Second set began at 10:11pm. Paul Languedoc was not manning the sound board, and Trey made a point to stop at the monitor board to speak with the engineer on his way to the stage before the first set. * - first time played; ** - with a false start (Trey stopped the band and made a comment about practicing, then re-started a moment later), and with a vocal jam based on the name “George Takei” (the actor who played Mr. Sulu on Star Trek); *** - lyric was “woke up this morning … about 3 o’clock this afternoon… ‘fatty’,” and “Waffle House” and “Hooters” were mentioned in the singing toward the end of the song; # - concert debut (only previously played on Letterman); ## - toward the end, Trey hands his guitar to Page (who plays it from his normal seat, doing things like playing behind his head, etc.), Mike hands his bass to Trey, Mike picks up the “B” and “AH” cymbals (traditionally used during “Crackin’ Rosie”), and the song ends; ### - Trey says: “Ladies and gentlemen, Al Gore!”, also with a Page solo/breakdown and a Mike solo/breakdown. (More details will be sought on the “Possum” antics.)

that contact is uber phunky-crunchy! and yes, that YEM is hard to listen to

^
That first set was my favorite from those first four shows.
Allow I believe someone already mentioned, the appearance of FOAM automatically bumps up the quality of any set.

where was languedoc?

^Had a baby?

rehab?

I don’t think I’ve heard much, if any, of this show, but the second set looks somewhat appealing.

January 4th, 2003
Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, Virginia

Set I: Llama, Boogie On Reggae Woman, Roggae, Maze, Anything But Me*, Ya Mar, Saw it Again, Bouncing Around the Room, Split Open and Melt

Set II: Rock and Roll, Mike’s Song -> Mist, Weekapaug Groove -> What’s the Use -> Down with Disease -> Fast Enough for You, Also Sprach Zarathustra**

Encore: Friday*

Notes: Show began at 7:58pm. Second set began at 10:01pm. Paul Languedoc appears to be back at the sound board. * - first time played; ** - Trey thanks fans and talks about how extremely blessed they are to be able to share all of this with them each night, also Trey, Mike and Page each take an individual “big rock ending” vamp before the band ends the song together.

Today in Phishtory…I don’t think phish ever played. Maybe in the studio or something.

That is all.

Well we’re back in the full swing of things: The winter tour of 2003, as well as the Europe winter tour of 1997. Not to mention some good February shows sprinkled throughout the early 90s.

Great Western Forum, Inglewood, CA

Set I: My Sweet One, Cover of the Rolling Stone > Chalk Dust Torture, Fee -> Taste, Bathtub Gin, Heavy Things, Golgi Apparatus
Set II: Possum, Walls of the Cave -> Carini, All of These Dreams, Limb by Limb, The Oh Kee Pah Ceremony > AC/DC Bag -> Prince Caspian
Encore: Loving Cup
Show Notes: Phish debuted Cover of the Rolling Stone, presumably as a nod to their actual appearance on the cover of the March 6, 2003 issue of that very magazine. Taste included What’s The Use teases. A fan jumped on-stage and grabbed Trey’s microphone during AC/DC Bag; he was able to begin a message to someone named “Nancy” before being dragged off-stage.

^That first set is great stuff! Perfectly balanced first set. The crowd’s reaction when Mike sings “and for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder” is awesome.

“A fan jumped on-stage and grabbed Trey’s microphone during AC/DC Bag; he was able to begin a message to someone named “Nancy” before being dragged off-stage.” --this is pretty funny on tape.

That’s such a killer show.

Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV

Set I: Llama, Wolfman’s Brother > Reba, Life on Mars?, 46 Days, It’s Ice, Frankie Says > Run Like an Antelope
Set II: Waves > Bug > Ghost -> Free > Harry Hood
Encore: Sample in a Jar
Show Notes: First Life on Mars? since March 2, 1997 (249 shows). Antelope included Stash teases. A group of fans hung a large white banner resembling a ghost costume over a section of the venue balcony. The banner proclaimed that it had been ‘871 Days Since Last Ghost’; the same banner appeared the next night indicating ‘1 Days Since Last Ghost.’ The Ghost jam included hints of Push On 'Til the Day. Hood included a “silent” jam.

I realize it’s not the 16th yet, but I absolutely adore the 16th show. My review of it is still floating around on here.

10 year anniversary of one of my favorite 2nd sets.

02/17/97 (Mon) Paradiso - Amsterdam, Netherlands
