SWF3 Studios
Badeu-Badeu, Germany

Talk, Waste, Train Song, Walfredo, Goodbye Jam

Show Notes: This “show” was an in-studio set before the Stuttgart show. Between Talk and Waste, Trey noodled around to the tune of Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough. The DJ played Michael’s version in its entirety after Waste. The Billy Breathes album versions of Free and Billy Breathes were also played during the show. This was an extremely funny interview with some great banter inbetween songs.

Set II: Stash, Ghost -> Low Rider Jam -> Makisupa Policeman -> Ya Mar, Guyute, Waves > Prince Caspian -> Frankenstein > Golgi Apparatus

Encore: Loving Cup

Show Notes: For the first time since November 18, 1989, Phish opened with YEM (albeit preceded by a “Charge!” tease from Trey). The YEM vocal jam included Trey singing pieces Clone. Phish subsequently debuted Clone, as well as three other songs previously only played by various band member side projects: Drifting, Blue Skies, and Final Flight. Stash included a Foam tease. The lyrics to Makiupa referenced the fire at the band’s hotel in Cincinnati a week earlier. Trey expanded Page’s nickname to “Leo Kottke” in Ya Mar. Ya Mar also included a Stash tease. Caspian was unfinished. Golgi included a Frankenstein tease.

Several good ones today but My Pick of the Day = 02/26/2003 (Worcester, MA). The 1993 & 1997 shows are also pretty sweet.

After Cavern, Trey mentioned that James Brown got out on parole, which caused Fish to comment that a cease-fire was also called that day in Iraq. “Don’t tell me this wasn’t planned,” he insisted. The Bowie was long and pretty spectacular. Lawn Boy featured a Trey guitar solo. Rocky Top was a seemingly obvious choice as closer for the first Volunteer State show.

The jam out of Mike’s featured teases of The End (which were also found in Weekapaug) and Careful with that Axe Eugene, as well as vocal quotes from The End. Possum included an All Fall Down Signal and a heavy metal-style intro. Wolfman’s included a Dave’s Energy Guide tease. Portions of this show were made available via the Slip, Stitch and Pass release.

Encore: First Tube > You Enjoy Myself -> Proud Mary

Show Notes: Instead of emerging from behind the piano with his own microphone for Lawn Boy, Page came front stage and used Trey’s microphone and stand. The move prompted a raucous response from the crowd. A portion of the Piper jam was based around the chords to Oye Como Va. Trey subseqeuently teased Oye Como Va, as well as Another One Bites the Dust, during YEM. The YEM vocal jam included a Daniel tease. Proud Mary was performed a capella (including renderings of the musical breaks) to conclude the vocal jam. Only one other version of Proud Mary is known

Thanks for posting! I couldn’t be there, so I’m loving the update.

Show Notes: The list for the second set is not known.

03/11/1988
Baso Lounge
Johnson State University
Johnson, VT

Set I: The Chicken, Funky Bitch, Sneakin’ Sally Through the Alley, Take the ‘A’ Train, You Enjoy Myself -> Wilson, Golgi Apparatus, Slave to the Traffic Light, Flat Fee, Corrine Corrina, The Lizards, David Bowie

Set II: Fluffhead, Dinner and a Movie, Harry Hood, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Harpua, AC/DC Bag > Alumni Blues > Run Like an Antelope

Show Notes: Sneakin’ Sally and Curtis Loew featured Tim Rogers (who was announced as “Bobby Brown”) on harmonica. Bowie began with a tease medley that included Timber, Sunshine of Your Love, Whipping Post, and several others. There was a vocal jam in Sneakin’ Sally, but not in YEM. Trey spat out the names “Marco Esquandolas… Poster Nutbag…Moses Heaps…Moses DeWitt” in Antelope. Dinner and a Movie was dedicated to “our good friend Suzannah.” The first set Lizards was delayed, as Trey cut on Fishman for losing his drumsticks during the gig.

Set II: Carolina, Roll Like a Cantaloupe, My Sweet One, Bouncing Around the Room, Dinner and a Movie, Take the ‘A’ Train, The Sloth, Ya Mar, Split Open and Melt, Harpua, Slave to the Traffic Light, AC/DC Bag, David Bowie

Colonial Theatre
Keene, NH

Set I: Suzy Greenberg, My Friend My Friend, Paul and Silas, Reba, Maze, Fee, Split Open and Melt, Mound, Divided Sky, Cavern

Set II: Llama, NICU, The Sloth, The Lizards, Bathtub Gin, My Mind’s Got a Mind of its Own, Brother, Cold as Ice > Baby Lemonade > Cold as Ice, All Things Reconsidered, Harry Hood, Rocky Top

Encore: Sanity, Memories, Carolina, Sleeping Monkey

Show Notes: This show marked the debut of Baby Lemonade and, along with it, the first appearance of Fishman’s Bag-Vac. My Friend was dedicated to “Steve E.” who drove eighteen hours to the show. Jokingly, Trey subsequently called the bouncers over to throw him out! Before Maze, Page read an announcement from management asking fans not to smoke in the building. Many people shouted out requests during the pause in Divided Sky, prompting Trey to scream “POSSUM!” into the microphone. The second set started with Page again requesting that fans not smoke, while Trey and Mike launched into a few bars of Smoke on the Water. NICU included a Simpsons Signal. Foreshadowing the encore, Sanity was teased before All Things Reconsidered. Lots of humor ensued over Mike’s use of a cardboard cutout of Kathleen Turner from the movie V.I. Warshawski, which started out on top of his bass rig and ended up in front of him, giving the appearance of his head on her body. Sanity was played for the first time since May 28, 1989 (255 shows).

Actually, the members of Phish were, by accounts, at a Frank Zappa concert on the evening of March 12, 1988. Chronologically, the show contained the first known version of Tela and Forbin’s, though the actual date of this show might be after their separate debuts (see May 21, 1988, where Trey calls Tela a debut).

This show included more Language Instruction; the subsequent Possum included Simpsons and Turn Turn Turn Signals. Listen for Trey’s teasing of Somewhere Over the Rainbow before and during Wilson and We’re Off to See the Wizard during the ending of Fluffhead. Set II: Wilson, Fluffhead

Set III: Fire, Sneaking Sally Through the Alley, Alumni Blues, The Lizards, La Grange, You Enjoy Myself, Good Times Bad Times

Encore: Halley’s.

Show Notes: One tape in circulation contains the first set, as listed above. Another contains the above list for sets II (incomplete) and III. Since songs are repeated within the list, it is likely that one is mislabeled. This was the last Phish show at Nectar’s and the master copy of sets II and III is specifically labeled as such; the tape circulating as the first set may be from the night before or from another show entirely. Also, the band wished the audience good night after Harpua and made several references to it being the “last song” so this is likely a final set from another show where Foam may have been the encore. Since an exact date can not be ascertained, we will continue to list as is.

The Antelope From Mars! Nice.

^
I believe I will listen to that set today. Thank you for sending that to me.

That 3/13/92 show is one of the real greats. Set one is just so much better than … the rest of the universe. Let’s not forget about that version of “Brother” in set two!

Hawaii!

Does anyone have the soundcheck? Hand it over, Kevin!
