Top Ten 3.0 Songs

What are your top ten favorite 3.0 songs?

Here’s what they’ve written, someone correct me if I’m wrong. I’m excluding songs that appear on solo projects (“The Architect”, “Pigtail”, “Say Something”, “Yarmouth Road”) … except Let Me Lie gets a pass for being also on a Phish album.

Point is, this music (like the back half of 1.0 and all of 2.0) dwells in the shadow of the early 1.0 material, forevermore. What about looking at it as if it were its very own body of work?

Strangely, I’d have to say that Trey’s Traveler album may be my favorite “Phish-related” album of 3.0. Plus I’m just not that familiar with a lot of songs of the last year or so…I’ve gotta catch up.

Without Fuego stuff:

BDtNL
Joy
Alaska
Liquid Time (like Trey versions more)

Err…that’s it…

Most of these are based on in-show experiences, but some are based on potential (new songs) and

1. Light - This song delivers time and time again. Best launchpad for jamming in 3.0.
2. Kill Devil Falls - A well-placed KDF gets you jacked.
3. TTE - Either you love it or hate it. I love it, but clearly they stopped playing it live for a reason. I listen to this mostly from “Joy.” It’s got a lot of parts that fit together and are more related compositionally then even some of the older tunes. Yeah, I said it. Belting “In and out of focus, time turns elastic” is fantastic at the end.
4. Sugar Shack - Amazingly phishy. When they play it right, it comes off really well. It’s a bit of a rarity, too.
5. Steam - Who doesn’t love to get down to this groove-fest. It inherits the funk elements of “Ghost” and “Tweezer.”
6. Ocelot - I’ve heard some really kickass Ocelots where they tore the roof in half.
7. Party Time - Again, when they let it go, it goes. Also a simple song with something complex (drums/rhythm) that makes it phishy.
8. Waiting All Night - What a dreamboat. Love this song and has some real potential live.
9. You Never Know - I’ve said it before, and I think this song could have been written a long time ago (with different lyrics). The rhythm, groove, and progressions are very phishy.
10. Wombat - Is to “Tube” as “KDF” is to “Chalkdust.”

^ I agree w everything said above.

The ‘party on the lamp post’ soundcheck doesn’t count, does it?

Since creating this thread, I’ve been listening to 3.0 originals a lot, and I’m finding it hard to choose now. So I’ll just do the ol’, ‘list subject to change’ disclaimer. These are my favorite ten right as of this posting.

Liquid Time
Fuego
Waiting All Night
Steam
I’ve Been Around
Party Time
Let Me Lie
Splinters of Hail
Stealin’ Time
Sugar Shack

Nods to Halfway to the Moon, Alaska, and 555, which are some of the ones I hesitated to cut.

[Also, this is really based on songwriting - lyrics + melody + chord progressions + recording production - only. I’m not calculating in live face melt jam-out type II potential factor in my top ten. Regards to those of you for whom that weighs heavily. Bracket bullshit out! /bracketbullshit]

Figured so. Which is why I left Light out. It has lead to some of the best jams of 3.0, but the song itself does nothing for me…if anything the great ensuing jam kind of makes me even dislike the song more because it’s like “just get to the good part”.

I like Light as a song just fine.

Jamming potential rarely influences my opinion of a song. And I also think that a song’s potential to be awesome live should not be the deciding factor of whether or not it is good. For instance, I can’t stand Gotta Jiboo or Carini as stand alone songs and I never put them on when I’m just listening to music. But since they usually lead to exciting moments in concert, it is fun to hear them live.

Similarly, some of my favorite Phish songs tend to bore the crowd live but I love them when I’m just listening at home, such as much of the Undermind and Billy Breathes and Farmhouse albums. But since they don’t work as well in a room full of thousands of people on LSD, I don’t care if I hear them at a show.

After we all have now got a good listen to Fuego, I think we need to make it the top 12 or something :eh:

Anyway, gotta take Ocelot off. I would like to add

Feugo
555
Waiting all nIght

My top 12

Light - far and away #1.
Steam
Wombat - 7/18/14!
KDF
BDtNL
Joy
Sugar Shack - studio.
The Line
Stealing time
Let me Lie.

I feel I can update my list here:

  1. Fuego
  2. Waiting All Night
  3. Halfway to the Moon
  4. Steam
  5. Backwards Down the Number Line
  6. Stealing Time From the Faulty Plan
  7. Joy
  8. I Been Around
  9. Light
  10. Alaska
  11. Winterqueen
  12. Sing Monica

(And why’d they stop playing Pigtail? Love that song but not even sure if it’s a “Phish tune.” Same with Liquid Time which is technically on a Phish album in Party Time but I only like it for the Trey live versions).

^Speaking of Liquid Time, I’m pretty sure Devotion To A Dream is like the same song.

It is? I assumed that Liquid Time was the same song as Sultans of Swing.

That too. Every time I hear the outro guitar in Devotion, all I hear is the outro riff in Liquid Time.

(in no particular order)

Fuego
Waiting all Night
Wingsuit
Wombat
Steam
Stealing Time from the Faulty Plan
Light
TTE
Party Time
You Never Know
