This year seems to be overlooked by most phans. What’s the deal? I’ve heard almost nothing about it…
i loved 96…although i love many of the other years i saw much much more…
wolf mountain…red rocks (this is the edge!)…plattsburgh…
detroit…grand rapids…alot of the fall tour is HOTT!
the holiday run was off the hook…
theres alot of good shit in 96…just find em and listen…i dont think youll be disappointed.
i left out deer creek…and dont forget about the europe shows…KILLER!!
I really love every show I have from '96 and would consider all of them to be in my Top 30 for sure:
8/13/96 has one of the best Mikes Grooves ever…period…and to top it off an acoustic set! Also a great Tube, Tela, Old Home Place, Llama, Glide, Slave, and a truly jawdropping Lizards.
11/2/96 - Crosseyed Antelope…the best CE&P…I’ll bet you anything.
11/7/96 - Personal favorite Gin…it is basically the whole 2nd set. The First set has it’s great moments too, however. Great Guyute, Weigh, Rift and Stash. The YEM closer is no slouch either.
12/29/96 - Maybe not the best 1st set ever…I stress the Maybe. The 2nd set has no contenders. All I can do is put the setlist up for all to marvel at.
2: David Bowie, A Day in the Life, Bathtub Gin, Lizards, You Enjoy Myself*-> Sixteen Candles**-> Vocal Jam, Harpua***-> Champagne Supernova#-> Harpua (1:27)
*With rotation jam. (First: Trey on drums, Fish on piano, Page on bass, and Mike on guitar. Then Fish switched to bass, Mike to piano, Page to guitar, and Trey continued on drums.) **Mike solo on piano. ***Story about everybody in town. Jimmy, Poster Nutbag, Harpua, etc., go to hell, where they all see the “Uber-Demon” (Tom Marshall). # Oasis cover, sung by Tom Marshall, the “Uber-Demon”.
So the point? I don’t get at all why anyone wouldn’t care for 1996 as much as any other year they consider to be the best…Great summer tour…Maybe the best fall tour, if I go based on the two shows I have from that tour…the only thing that holds it back from being the best year is the one set Europe shows, which were still cool for all the jamming with Santana and his band.
Yeah I agree that '96 is overlooked by people.
8-13-96 “Mike’s” is the best in my collection!!!
I heard a large portion of the New Orleans '96 show on livephish.com today and wasn’t disappointed. Heard 2 great “Bowie’s” and a rather sweet but short “Reba.”
I wish nugs.net would release more stuff other than the '98 summer tour! Where the hell can I get soundboard quality Phish? I don’t even go to momadance.com anymore because it is so slow.
I like 1996. There are a ton of good shows. Clifford Ball, four sick nights at Red Rocks, the fall Hampton and MSG shows are great, Halloween was awesome, Deer Creek, the M show(11/15/96 St Louis), Vegas with Les Claypool, and a great but not exceptional New Years run are all highlights. And those are just out of the ones that I have heard.
I saw my first two shows that year: 8/10/96 Alpine and 12/2/96 Phoenix
Vancouver, Frisco and Saccramento from fall should be listened too as well!
96 is good from what I’ve heard, particularly the halloween show in my hometown. Basically the 5 years between 94-98 are all amazing.
unfortunately, I was eleven in 1996, and all i have heard from that year is halloween (which is ridiculous), the deer creek live phish release, and I think that’s it.
I’ve been listening to the Red Rocks run today. I gave up on listening to all of post-hiatus. It turns out I could only listen to the first four shows ;D
You gotta love all of the theremin use during this time of Phish.
Anyways, this Red Rocks run is just sooooooooooooooo good. Already gave a listen to the first night. Chalkdust opener is always nice. And the Split rages like no other, followed by a really nice Mango.
Currently listening to the second night. Some guy yelling something (it sounds like he just sucked down the largest balloon ever) during the silent section of Divided Sky was incredibly annoying to say the least. I would like to say that this second set is just plain incredible. Start to finish, a damn near perfect set.
I’m on the encore of that show now, so soon it will be the third night. I can’t wait to be on “The Edge” once again.
This thread was one of my first posts!!
The memories…wipes tears
my first show was in 96. palace show. don’t remember the date. november, i believe. anyway…i kinda liked it.
I believe that was the show I listened to today! Auburn Hills? If it is happy 10 year anniversary! ;D
holy…what the…it IS my ten year anniversary!
damn, it seems like yesterday. i was 22 then. i guess i’m gettin old…
okay…memory time. i went to this show because i had recently heard Bouncing (from ALO) on the radio. thought it was just this incredibly cool and unique sounding song. haunting, even. learned it was by this band called Phish, which i thought at the time was Fishbone. got some friends together and bought a few tix on a whim. the first thing i remember about the show was the lights…they were just so intense. didn’t really understand or even enjoy the music all that much at first, i was just waiting for Bouncin. i don’t remember the setlist, but i do know they played divided sky, because it grabbed my attention immediately. it was so huge and melodic and powerful, and then the “quiet part” before the big ending jam…to this day that is one of the most beautiful and emotional pieces of music to my ears. i think i’ve said this before somewhere on these boards, but it really felt like that melody was something i was “remembering” from childhood or a past life or something. it just hit me on so many levels and really blew me away. i think i “got it” in phases for the first year or so. that was my first moment of “getting it”. i’m pretty sure none of my friends ever really did, and i’ve literally never successfully converted anyone to phishdom.
anyway, 10 years today…wow ; )
Space Camp.
The summer tour was the best.
I didn’t care for the Hersey Park show, but other then that the whole summer tour was the best.
Clifford Ball was something that took us all by surprise.
That was when we all finally realized how big Phish had become.
They were on fire that weekend.
So good.
Ah,…now I’m getting misty eyed.
Oh the memories.
Yah, I remember getting to the BAll and thinking, who the fuck are all these people??? I loved '96! Red Rocks was something out of a dream that segued into the Ball that was a dream. I remember thinking how absolutly surreal the whole things was.
11/9/96, yesterday. The Swept>Steep>Hood was beautiful!
The live Phish release from 96 is sick. Deer Creek I think? Remember when they used to kick the shit out of us, and then when our brains were completely melted, they would bust out an amazingly beautiful acoustic section. I used to love that.
One of my favorite shows of all times was in 96. I think 12.29.96 (the infamously crazy Philly spectrum) with a rotation jam. anyone else at this show? Tickle me Elmo was thrown up onto page’s piano. (this was back when the tickle me Elmo cost like $300).
Anyway, I have my own personal thoughts about 96 being the beginning of the end so to speak. Just my thoughts though. Please don’t yell at me like usual. {;o)
