FANS CHANGE TREYS TONE

A series of posts on the popular Phish message board Phantasy Tour may have persuaded Trey Anastasio to bring back a piece of equipment the guitarist stopped using in 2000. According to the blog The Butter Room , a series of fans posted urging Anastasio to bring back Ross Compressor,

thats sweet, i hope he brings it back,
i love the sustain he gets with his guitar, its seriously amazing

If he can’t find it I’l buy him one for x-mas

^ Ha ha! We could all throw in a few bucks and send him the gift, Oh Kee Pa Secret Santa style.

I say the compressor should come back. I’m not really about making suggestions to musicians about their gear and the technical like, but this change I would agree with. I saw only one show post-hiatus, but have listened to many, and that tone grinds my eardrums.

But in the end, it is Trey’s decision, and I will deal with it either way.

YES!!! BRING BACK THE ROSS!!

anybody know exactly what kind of mesa amp he played? was it one of the marks?
what years did he play mesa? i’d like to do some song by song comparison.

Are we actually that against Trey’s tone, or do we not like the sloppiness that came along with it?

I think there are some songs where I prefer the rough, edgier PH sound; “Rock and Roll” being a prime example.

^Good question … I think that aside from the edgier tone (which to me just translates to dirtier, not necessarily cooler), and the sloppy playing, there’s another factor - inconsistency of overall presence & control. That’s the whole point of compression too.

So I think even on top of his game, he’d have a hard time sounding as consistently smooth and present in the mix, if he continues to digress from compress. To abstain from sustain. In this sidebar re: guitar. In this fix of the mix. And you’re not alone, in thinking he’s prone to clone his old tone.

I don’t know what any of this means, but I do find it funny that Tom is an “avid” PT-reader, and that this actually got back to Trey.

who’s gonna pony up?

Also, I think he stopped using his Mesa Boogie Mark III around '97 ( I could be wrong though)

sweet!

i like the PH tone, but no doubt some of the more intricate, delicate stuff suffers from the loss 'o the Ross.

^^One of these days I’m gonna score one of those for $150 like that one time that I almost did but then got outbid at the last second. $350 bucks is WAY too expensive for a compressor, even a Ross. Plus my friend has one, and as mentioned, without 2 tube screamers and a Languedoc, you can’t even get close to making it sound like Trey’s.

As for buying it for Trey, he should just find his. And put it back on the board!

Agreed, I wouldn’t pay 350 even for a ross…in the meantime my dynacomp works fine.

I prefer my Nakatomi 420. Yippie Ki Yay Motherfucker!

^haha, I got rid of mine after Carl Winslow used it to shoot a kid…he had one of those toy guns…looked just like the real thing.

350 is way to much for a compressor, thats insanity

Roy, if you are what I think you are you’ll know when to shut up, and when to pray.

^What is: The Gambler by Kenny Rogers?

Who’s driving this car, Stevie Wonder?!

that’s a good point. i’m not against his tone, i guess i’m just not a fender guy really. i have a mesa (nomad) and an orange (rockerverb) but i love the sounds trey gets no matter what he’s playing.
someone said he dropped the mesa around 97. they went into a funkier direction around then. that’s cool too but i did grow tired of trey just playing funky chords and throwing loops in there. it’s good for some stuff but i felt it was overused and kind of a crutch at times.
