I don’t hear enough people talking about this song. I love the jams it produces. It is one of my favorite latter Phish originals (latter meaning last 3 albums).
I like to twist one while I listen to Twist
I LOVE TWIST! I can’t say enough about this song. They could have played it a million times in the same way and I’d still love it.
damn, i hadn’t heard a whole lot of the 6-20-04 SPAC version, but damn! they really do funk it up in the version, and i can see why I C C likes it so much
i liked it best when it was called Twist Around. it had a different intro, an extra bit of lyrics, and produced some really great tapestries of improvisation.
a great early version is from 12-06-97 (a show i’m quite partial to). a wwwwicked-tits, mean jam> a very masterful dissolution into the OLD-style piper!
I really dig the Twist from 6-14-00. For about 12-15 minutes you forget what song you are in, and then they slowly bring it back around to Twist…and then they go into crazy 20+ minute jam after that.
While perusing throught the T songs, I realized I haven’t listened to the 4.16.04 twist in a long time…I must listen to it again soon…what a great jam…for me, its the highlight of the entire run.
When they busted it out at lakewood in 99 it was awesome. By the fall it was too heavy in the rotation for me. Not until SPAC 04 did this tune break me out of my twist dissillussion!
I still love Twist, but I don’t like the older versions. The old opening just doesn’t fit the song IMO. Watch the Vegas 00 version for a great, straight forward version! I love the bluesy, jammed opening of that one, too.
I’ve got the Island Tour version going and according to the Phish.net setlists, it says this “Twist” contains a “crazy, aliens-are-coming jam.”
what does that mean? it’s spacey, for sure, but what aliens?
Love the old version of Twist Around. 11-23-97 is a great example, quiet begginning before it evolves into deep funk. Never liked the album version very much, it’s usually the intro that bugged me about it.
I love how Chris used to spin the lights round and round and round during the jam. Check out the Vegas DVD to see what I’m talking about.
For anyone who hasn’t gotten it yet the Twist from the trey show with Mike the other night sounds fuckin great, I think its the first “Phish only” tune Trey has played electric since the Mud Bowl.
nice im listening to this show now, and the twist is coming up in a few minutes
at about 19:30 the jam is thick and is sweet, brings back that phish feeling, when oh when will it come back
Nobody had heard a Phish jam like that before. That really intense, spacey, and energetic jamming style didn’t become prevalent until 99. Check out the 12/11/99 Ghost for what I’m talking about; it has a similar, spacey-but-in-your-face-jam.
Twist -> Simple is amazing.
That’s all that needs to be said.
What show??
It must be an '04 show, there is no Twist->Simple in the Companion.
Speaking of Twist, this song does nothing for me.
edit- missed 11/29/03, whoops.
11.29.03 I believe. Although I’ve only heard that a few times, and its been a while, that is not all that needs to be said.
There are so many great versions of this song that lead to great jams. Surprisingly, '03 was not really the year of the Twist I expect it to be. 2.18.03 is a 1st set Twist that is OK, but not memorable, and their were a few summer '03 versions that were not memorable either. 7.30.03 is pretty good though.
Fall 03 and Summer 04 is when we finally started getting some good post-hiatus Twist jams. I always think of 4.2.98 when I think of great Twists, and 11.29.03, 12.29.03, 4.16.04 and 6.20.04 all follow in that tradition. I’m not saying any of the PH versions are necessarily better than 4.2.98, but at least they produce cool jams or fit in well with the set. The one I think of when mentioning “fitting well into the set” is 12.29.03! For those who don’t know, the second set starts with Rock and Roll->Twist—>Boogie on–>Ghost–>Free. This twist begins with probably the longest intro ever! Its very bluesy and Trey is on FIRE! After the fun composed section, Mike and Fish quickly pick up the speed of this jam and segue into Boogie on! Its really great stuff and the ability of this Twist to begin an EPIC sequence of segueing (and a very memorable set) cannot be underestimated.
4.16.04 and 6.20.04. These jams are awesome. 4.16.04 takes a little longer to reach its high point, but its worth the wait…and this version is finished! Its about 24 minutes long I think. And 6.20.04 produces some ridiculously tight and funky SPAC '04 sections. Fishman just plain owns. I highly recommend both of these '04 twists.
