^True, but for me the jams are more important. Dont get me wrong, I’m loving this tour, but it couldnt hurt if they were experimenting on a bit more of a regular basis.
Just wait until Trey’s off probabtion.
Wait, did I say that? Take that, old Devin.
i predict second leg will see more type II just like fall 09 seemed get more “out there” than summer 09.
Listening to the Camden Chalk Dust from this year. Very Type II, IMO.
Not as plentiful, but around.
Detroit’09 Kill Devil Falls was getting there… but didn’t quite make it.
This is where Phish 2.0 has a little leg up on Phish 3.0. They were riskier, albeit sloppier, in 03-04.
How long is Trey on probabtion for?

^end of 2010…He got 3 years in 2007…
2nd Leg is all Multi-Runs, I think that’s were the Type 2 and 4 Jams will come into play… ![]()
^I have a feeling your right. I’m also way pumped for this years fall tour, assuming that there is one. There is just something about the cold nights and the indoor venues that gets me all giddy.
Have patience… type II will come.
Will it?
If you had to compare current Phish to previous-era Phish, what would it be? 1992? 1993?
I am in agreeance on this one! I’m thinkin that the more amount of time they’re allowed to play at a venue, the less they would worry about playing a certain amount of songs…instead, they might have the mindset of, “hey, were here for a couple days, lets see what these ones have to bring us n’ lets have some fun!” having that extra day to experiment might help em out a lil…who knows? But knowing about their no-setlist-plan-of-attack, they probably have that mindset every night lol
I think they’re definitely using setlists these days.
^why does Trey have to mouth basically every song to Page and Mike and then Mike mouths it to Fishman?
maybe Trey writes out most of the songs he wants to play including first time covers of course, but I definitely think there’s some looseness goin on
This is exactly why Summer2 2009 is the best 3.0 IMO.
From what I’ve heard the sloppiness is almost as prevalent now as it was then. A lot of these old Phish tunes that they are ‘busting out’ don’t sound so crisp. I went to Hartford and SPAC so the only rare songs I saw them play were Mango Song and Dinner and a Movie. These shows where they bust out a bunch of crazy songs don’t usually have longevity to me. I’m sure they are super fun to be at, but I usually listen to them once, maybe twice, and then they just gather dust (electronic dust albeit). The shows I envision listening to over and over again through the years are the Hershey, SPAC, and CMAC shows because the jamming magic is there. Granted it’s not as ‘far out’ as in the past, but it’s there. I could be singing a whole different tune if I actually saw one of these crazy-setlisted shows though.
Because he still doesn’t know how to work that teleprompter yet ![]()

This era reminds me of 89-92 (obviously not as tight and not as fast playing)…There is jamming on the standard songs such as Hood, Reba, Bowie, but there is certainly a lack of Type II jamming. Phish wasn’t always a band that delved into Type II. Really I’m not so sure that Type II didn’t start with the Murat Gin or you could argue that it didn’t start until Fall 94.
By Summer 95 we had officially reached the full on Type II improv. So when you think about it…over half their career they didn’t delve too far from the structure of a song…Sure they jammed, but I’m not so sure the jams that some heads are seeking are coming back anytime soon. Maybe one here or there, but I’m not so sure I would get my hopes up for them.
^ Tad…take that back! I want my 25 minute 2001 ASAP!
^I’m down for a 25-min 2001!
^ Hate to be a downer, but I think you’ll have to listen to the Went or 9/29/99 if you want to hear a 25 minute 2001.
