No line for the bathroom. Front row seat. No security. Beers are 600% cheaper. Adjustable sound controls. No commercials. Oh wait, there was. I must have confused it with the live show.
Yeah, but there’s nothing like being at a Phish show and hearing them live. Take it from someone who really has to carefully watch the “overhead” involved in getting to a show for many reasons.
There is no comparison, if just for the shear force of the sound.
I hear ya fone. Believe me, I do. And I would prefer to see Phish live.
But, as I’ve said in the past… the scene drags me down, hard. I find it hard to ignore. I’m able to go to a Prince show, Pearl Jam show, Furthur show, etc… and I get a seat and room to dance and everyone is respectful. But with Phish… I just don’t seem to have that luck. And, if I’m not so into the show (which happens), I don’t care about wasting 15 bucks. But hundreds or thousands (depending on the travel and whether I take my kid, etc…) is a tough pill to swallow.
Whatever it is, I find myself in a better mood after these streams than I have been after my last 10 or so Phish shows… so, I’m just goin with what makes me happy!
I only see a handful of hippes at each show these days, Glenn. The crowd SUCKS now. Think drunken, just-there-for-the-drugs DMB/WSP fans. At least for me, I ALWAYS get stuck around a bunch of short- haired, collared-shirts, kahki shorts, some married with a dolled up wife (and WAY more often than it should be, a baby) and some with a slew of completely uninterested chicks wearing lots of make-up and perfume who just play on their phones and talk over the show. Hell, the guys don’t even pay attention to the show!
I had the most horrible neighbors on all sides lastnight. I even put in earplugs to drown out the guys next to me talking about WORK, and still they ruined most of the first set.
Aside from money and time, the crowd is a really big factor for why I don’t see more shows. I can’t fucking stand the people who see Phish nowadays.
Honesly, to lower the douchebag factor to one (me ) I would prefer couch tour like Dooj, but I would still have to see them live a handful of times each year. Afterall like Fone says, even with all the BS, there’s nothing like the sound force of seeing them live…even if I can’t hear most of it for my inconciderate neighbors.
One reason I like being there at the show is that I’m very aware that there are thousands of people who are definitely hearing what I’m hearing. So when Phish does something that really resonates with me, especially when it’s unusual, I feel like they’re … telling everyone in the room about something I too would like everyone to hear. But I can’t tell them myself since I don’t have a P.A., they’d find that on me in the frisk straight off.
I’m oblivious to everything else around me 97% of the time that Phish is on stage playing music. And for those other 3%, all I have to do is close my eyes and all the BS just vanishes.
But, yeah, Ollie’s experience sounds about right. And, like I said, I go to plenty of concerts. It just seems to be a Phish thing, which is too bad.
But, again, I was pumped last night. I didn’t care about repeats, flubs, fake peaks, rain, talkers… any of it! It was just me and the band having an awesome time. I could hear every note, I stayed dry as a bone, I had plenty of room to dance, I could see the band the whole night and the drive home couldn’t have been easier Worth every penny of the 12.50 I paid.
I guarantee, had I actually travelled to these shows, I would not have been in nearly as good a mood at the end of all of it.
It’s more of an acceptance than a talent. I just remind myslef that, unfortunately, everybody has the right to be an asshole, and, unfortunately, everybody paid the same (more or less) for the ticket to be there and can ‘enjoy’ themselves in any way they please. They don’t have to follow my ‘rules’. Does this make them dicks? In my opinion, yea kinda. Is it going to change anything? No, not really. I do, however, take comfort in the fact that I can actually appreciate what is going on onstage a lot more than somebody that’s there fucking around with their friends. And it has nothing to do with somebody wearing nice clothes, or perfume, or makeup or whatever… Hell I get more annoyed about the fucking wook or flatbrim fucktard that is just there to get spun out than anybody else.
But I understand your point dooj 100%. In fact last night I looked over at my roommate after the show was over and said "I’m really glad I did not spend 8 hours fucking soaked and miserable to see that show. It was a good show, maybe even a great show, but I’ve seen lots of good shows and lots of great shows. I was glad I got to watch this one in my pajamas and sprawled out on the couch
i very rarely have any problems with the others around me at phish shows. i usually have good seats up front so there may be more “hard core dedicated fans” down there. at camden i did have one of those super agressive dancers which got a little annoying. you know, the spinning, hopping, waving and reaching for the sky guys. wasnt the biggest deal, for there’s alot just like him out there. once he knocked into for the 4th time i politely told him to chill, he apologized, and we later shared a joint. also im pretty good at locking into the band and tuning everything else out, but i could see how it could be annoying.
