haven’t heard this infamous night 2 yet but all i know is that the DWD->Maze from night one just gave me a straight up eargasm.

In 1991 they had about a tenth of the song catalog they do now. The current rotation is pretty perplexing to me. Couple it with an almost complete lack of real improvisation and I’m starting to be disinterested.

I’ve been thinkin about this stuff a bit. … I think maybe we all want Phish to be exactly as awesome, and in the same ways, as they were when we first came to know them.

For me, I was at my peak fascination with Phish in probably 1991. If you take a look at those shows, they resemble today’s shows in many ways.

I gather bigb’s fond of the '99, and I was kind of … well I only caught one '99 show & it wasn’t a good time. So I think different fans expect different things, or hope for different things. I can totally respect that.

I agee…fuck it! If people don’t want to see Phish now…GREAT…more room for me to boogie.

I only see a handful of hippes at each show these days, Glenn. The crowd SUCKS now. Think drunken, just-there-for-the-drugs DMB/WSP fans. At least for me, I ALWAYS get stuck around a bunch of short- haired, collared-shirts, kahki shorts, some married with a dolled up wife (and WAY more often than it should be, a baby) and some with a slew of completely uninterested chicks wearing lots of make-up and perfume who just play on their phones and talk over the show. Hell, the guys don’t even pay attention to the show!

I had the most horrible neighbors on all sides lastnight. I even put in earplugs to drown out the guys next to me talking about WORK, and still they ruined most of the first set.

Aside from money and time, the crowd is a really big factor for why I don’t see more shows. I can’t fucking stand the people who see Phish nowadays.

Honesly, to lower the douchebag factor to one (me ) I would prefer couch tour like Dooj, but I would still have to see them live a handful of times each year. Afterall like Fone says, even with all the BS, there’s nothing like the sound force of seeing them live…even if I can’t hear most of it for my inconciderate neighbors.

Go for the music not the scene. Tell them to shut the fuck up (they will). Don’t let other people affect your show. Hippies suck…sorry my wife is hot.

This was on Phish.net this morning. It’s the Alpharetta 2 recap and the author basically states that Phish played a nostalgia show. This part I found interesting though.

But these shows do not happen in isolation and out of context. In fact, Phish has made every show they’ve played since 2003 available for instant purchase. Before that, they encouraged fans to collect live tapes and go to multiple shows and have made much of the intensely special band/audience relationship that grew out of that special set of circumstances. It granted them a level of freedom (artistically and economically) that is rarely achieved in this business.

In regard to 3.0’s audience/band disconnect that a few people have mentioned, is what I’ve bolded above contributing to that disconnect? I’m a 3.0 fan who gets pretty into the shows. I dance, I focus on the band and the music. But at my fingertips is nearly every show the band has played since '83. I don’t need to go to every show to hear every show and I don’t have to wait in the mail for discs or cassettes. So…is the mentality becoming “I dont need to pay attention to the music coming from the stage because I can download it in only a few hours”?

I dunno. My train of thought I think started out good but it didn’t arrive at the right station. Thoughts?

Hmm… I think my wife is good looking too, and I wear khaki shorts some times… I have been seeing Phish for 16 years now, been to something like 60 shows, been all over the country seeing them, never had dreads, normally like to shower every day to every other day if possible while out terr’ing, have a fairly decent job that allows me to now stay at hotels if possible, fly if I need to and overall enjoy the show without worrying about work for a few days. I like to party with all types of people, I love my Phish Tat’s, I have 100’s of shows on multiple I-Pods, I think of Phish as a religion and feel that I gain something each time I see them live. I always respect others space, but also will move or ask the people around me to enjoy the show rather than type on their BB…

I am not a “hippie”, I guess if you are judging the book by its cover but I enjoy most people, the music and I have for many years… I guess I have never looked around and been pissed by the crowd as far as how they look, but then again… I do agree with the thought about the “kids” just there for the drugs or the fact that they can say they went… You know?

There are some points I agree with there, but some I guess I never worry about… If you wear makeup or smell good, more power to you IMO…

I guess part of it has to do with why you go to live shows in the first place. In my case, I have never attended a live show simply to hear the music played louder. Yes, it is louder at a concert than it is on my headphones or in a car… but I wear earplugs at every show I go to anyways. I really don’t care about that.

The main reason I go to a show is to experience the connection between a band and its fans and to share that connection with people who feel passionately about the music. If I don’t feel the band is connecting or I don’t feel good about the people who are attending the show, the overall experience inevitably suffers.

The only other reason I go to live shows is to experience what’s going on as it happens. That is something I could never do without attending a show… until couch tour.

Now for you, it may be different. You may be all about the volume. But that’s not where it’s at for me. And there are only so many times I can pay money to spend an evening with a bunch of people I can’t stand. And, no it doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that you are wearing makeup or those stupid ass sunglasses. It’s just the fact that you keep bumping into me, pushing me, spilling shit on me, talking through the show, taking my space every time I move an inch and then smiling at me like I’m supposed to like you.

I agree with this. Which is why I went from 11 shows in '09 to 3 in '10 to now just 2 in '11. As much as I love getting down to the streams, I do not feel the current show experience is worth spending a whole lot of money on.

I’m able to go to a Prince show, Pearl Jam show, Furthur show, etc… and I get a seat and room to dance and everyone is respectful. But with Phish… I just don’t seem to have that luck.

Wow I have the complete opposite experiences. Pearl jam douche bags, furthur wooks, at prince actually the douchbag behind me told my wife and I to keep our arms down that we were ruining his show even though he was sitting down the whole night. Really uptight.

Phish show? I can’t remember a problem with the crowd.

Again maybe your not just not into Phish. Can I get those Tahoe tix because you’ll probably have a bad time due to the small venue and the packed sold out crowd. Sounds awful doesn’t it?
