I’ve been listening to the Great Went today, which is definitely my favorite Phish experience and one of the best experiences of my life. I was thinking about it and I realized something that made that weekend, the Lemonwheel, and Big Cypress, special in a way that IT and the 3.0 festivals will never be. I remember stopping at a gas station on the way home from Limestone and reading the USA today newspaper headline. It wasn’t earth-shattering news, but rather big news (can’t remember exactly what it was about) and I distinctly remember thinking "damn, nuclear holocaust could’ve begun in the world and we would’ve been completely oblivious to the whole thing. It was just the fans and the band in the middle of fucking nowhere for three days worrying about little more than enjoying some amazing music. I think there might’ve been a couple of pay phones at the Great Went, and that was it. No cell phones (though admittedly more phones were around by the time of Cypress), no internet, no wireless technology, 3G, or social networking keeping everybody ‘in the loop’. No connection to the rest of the world whatsoever. Maybe it was just me not giving a fuck about anything else besides the moment, but it was truly a remarkable phenomenon that I am extremely grateful to have enjoyed.
I remember there being a row of like 10 pay phones at the Went that everyone was lined-up at. I was in line making the only call I made those 4 days (telling the 'rents I at least made it there okay) when this girl in front of me, with a whole bottle of jack, just did a face plant right to the tarmac. It happened so fast noone could catch her.
I also remember the giant message boards that were erected so you could “post” a message for a lost friend or something. Wish we could go back to those days of tape decks and no cell phones.
those boards were such a shit show! I remember having plans in advance to use the message board at the Lemonwheel to meet up with somebody. I took one look at that thing and thought “really didn’t need to see them anyway…” Even if you were completely sober, finding a message on those things was near impossible, let alone with a head full of hallucinogens!
starting to think about the fact that Im probably not going to be able to stream shows from out at my place…any saturday shows I’ll be at work so that’ll be $$
our internet out here will be choppy if i try to stream, I fear
