^What’s up Matt!?
You’ll get your tickets.
Whats up Brian!! I sure do hope I get em…
What are your plans for the summer?? I am trying not to get too hasty so I have a little gas left in the tank so to speak when they announce fall/winter tour! I would really like to hit another couple of shows later in the year.
Would be nice to cross paths with you again my brother if you are out on the road this summer/fall!
I wonder how many NEW tunes we will hear this summer… ![]()
^ I hope none.
porquoi?
I’m not usually a huge fan of new tunes, I like to stick to what I know, but if this band doesn’t start churning out some new tunes pretty soon, they’ll be dunzo all over again
^ I compare my enjoyment to them playing tunes from Joy (last album) to tunes not from Joy. New Songs vs Old Songs.
[Alternatively, replace “from JOY” with “before (any 1.0 year).”]
I would prefer if they play concerts with No JOY tunes a lot more than ALL JOY tunes, or a high percentage of JOY tunes.
In looking back at the shows I’ve seen, my enjoyment of that show increases when the percentage of ‘new tunes’ decrease. As my personal preference, this inversely proportional relationship holds.
Disclaimer is some tunes from JOY are worse than others to hear in a concert. Just bringing up that album as an example.
Again, I don’t mind new tunes, but if the are not as good as the older tunes, I’d rather hear the older ones. In my opinions, Phish’s best tunes were written when they were young (or from 1.0).
^ I hear ya.
I too enjoy the older tunes, but there are a couple new ones that are taking shape.
And covers too, I really like some of the new covers and what they take from them when they play and evolve.
Stagnant water
i’m pretty happy with where we’re at
considering age and soberness and all factors…we’re still kickin ass for sure. dicks light was enough return on any investment Ive made
yeah, Phish is alright.
I think I’d rather have a new song than another Possum given the choice, if “new” means a song I haven’t heard before, as opposed to song off of Joy. I don’t really care if the song isn’t very good if it’s new. Hearing Phish play a new song for the first time is a pretty awesome experience. I think the only song I’ve ever seen them debut might be “My Problem Right There”, which isn’t good, but it was super fun being there hearing them try it out for the first time. I like that Phish do seem to understand when a song really doesn’t work live and they have no problems shelving a lot of those songs, but they can’t really know unless they try, so I’m for more new stuff. I wish more of it were good, but what can you do?
I personally loved MPRT and thought it fit well. Bring it back!!
I hope not too, not because I don’t want new phish tunes but because I don’t want them to be judged as live songs before we hear them as studio songs first…I like that approach more because I think I (and probably most phish fans) tend to be more critical of any song in a live setting, and I might not give a song as much of a chance if I’ve already heard it live and I don’t like it
I also think it’s really unfair to think that the next album will be anything like Joy, Joy was exactly what the title of the album inferred it would be…and in that sense that album is a very successful album, it’s not what we’re used to from Phish, but nobody is used to bringing a band back together that brings so many people so much happiness, not just the fans but the members of the band as well
so that being said, I really think everyone’s big complaint about Joy is that it is pretty fucking cheesy and rainbow and unicorny, but I hope and think that they’ve gotten that out of their system…as for the songs we’ve seen from the past few years that are new, there are some that portray that they haven’t gotten it out of their system yet and ones that say they have…I also don’t really think much of the music for the new tunes has been written by the group as a whole, but that’s just the way it sounds to me
Yeah I’m not nuts about Joy, and when I say I want to hear Phish do new stuff, I mean brand new stuff.
It’s important for the band to keep making songs, isn’t it?
My thing is that I just want 'em to get back to making awesome songs. For the record I think a few of the Joy songs are awesome. But many of them songs are really not. Party Time, same deal. A couple great tracks and a lot of lesser stuff. So let’s have some awesome, right?
I often bitch about “when the music changed” or whatever. I don’t want them to go back or anything. Playing no new stuff at all would be more ‘going back’. I want there to be new Phish songs that they’re gonna have a hard time NOT playing every night, because we all dig it. New giants, a new spring of inspired and fun and interesting material, with lyrics that impress and confound.
^Well said. My personal take on Joy was just the thrill of the buildup to Phish probably coming back. Shows like Rothbury '08 (with the stories, hints, debuts, and collaboration), and Fishman being in Nashville for the debut of TTE. That time period…That was an exciting time! Seeing those songs on a Phish album was awesome for me.
I agree with this.
if them writing new music produces anything similar to this:

They can write and play new music all they want. Keep things fresh ppl!
on a side note my friend gave me the SICKEST bday present ever on saturday. a 2tb harddrive with every Phish show ever recorded and every phish video ever recorded. Been going nuts on some phish vids on my big screen. seriously can’t say how awesome it is to have this basically endless catalog
New tunes are GREAT… It means our favorite band is not just a nostalgia act, so to speak. Play some Light, Party Time and others, why not?
New tunes will be there, I know it and I too hope for some cool covers!
But most of all, I am just glad the boys are healthy, playing and interested in touring!

I agree with Ryan and Kevin.
Also, as a vocal “disliker” of Joy, it wasn’t that the album itself I disliked. I hated Joy as a Phish album. Does that make sense? Phish is most definitely NOT a studio band, but I still found it to be very weak for them…minus a song or two. It’s not that I hate all post hiatus Phish. I love Round Room, but Undermind and Joy not so much. Joy seems like a necessary way to work themselves back into being a band again and I’m thankful for it in that sense. I just think they can write much better material. Trey’s writing style has changed so much over the years. I know he has to take his own path and write what he wants. I’m glad he’s getting his creativity out. I just don’t care for the majority of it. That’s why I don’t see Trey shows. I hope on the next album, he really utilizes and taps into the enormous potential of his bandmates…especially Mike. His songs are always my favorite for some reason
On a completely unrelated note, I think “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone” has finally replaced “Loving Cup” as my favorite cover. That’s pretty huge for me since LC has been my favorite since I first heard it in the 90’s.
I remember when people hated Hoist…
Oh, I still hate Hoist.

It’s a fine set of songs, but it follows Junta > LB > aPoN > Rift for God’s sake, … so it just sucks for not trying that hard. It’s like they said, you know what? We work too hard, let’s write quick and simple from now on.
Phish sucks. Deal with it.
