There aint no time to stash the gumbo
Or rattle around in a cage
The sacrificed childs made bubbles
And spittle is everywhere enraged
In a hot sand or in a my feet
Theyre blistered and caked with debris
Chez rolez is guarding the tote board
While angry piddles with glee
^And yet Lifeboy just doesn’t seem as good live. Same with Billy Breathes. In fact, what are other songs that are actually better on the album than they are live?
Here we are, Fitz, sitting on opposite ends of the age curve, sharing a totally illogical love for a specific type of music, and extolling the miracle of life that’s allowed us to want to enjoy these sounds instead of, in my case, Josh Groban or Bruce Springsteen, or in yours, the Jonas Brothers or Bruce Springsteen (being that we’re both in NJ) (btw, I’m not impuning Bruce. He’s rocking the shit out of Giant Stadium every night this week for three hours and highlighting a different album each night. I only wish I enjoyed his music more).
I constantly wonder what the heck I’m doing on the OKP because there’s so much that I don’t have in common with most of the folks here. But the spirit of “Phish”, and understanding even what the sound of the band’s name means to us, as in the memory of so many glorious moments of musical nirvana, is something that is so strong, that all of the differences between us, that seem evident most times, become unimportant totally, when someone writes the word, speaks the sound, or puts on their music.
In fact, you and I and the rest of this crazy Phish fandom, are indeed fortunate and should thank our lucky stars, that we can hear and appreciate this stuff to the level that we can. It is a gift, and definitely one that shouldn’t be taken for granted. But also remember, the double edge to the sword of knowledge. As great as Phish is, I can attest that there is some band out there, at some point in your life that will be at least as good to you, or better, as long as you keep your heart and your mind open to them. If I didn’t, and I’m not sure how I did, I’d still be hping for the Beatles to unite.
After listening through 1990, and getting so used to hearing The Asse Festival, it was pretty sweet to hear Guelah as I start 1991 now. I have new found appreciation for this song.
