Type Your Phish Thoughts

I came to realize last night, that there are only a few tunes on Wingsuit I’d care to hear live, at least regularly. Fuego, 555, and Wombat. That might change with time, but the rest are too slow or simple.

Although, to immediately contradict myself, when they started The Line right after Winterqueen last night, I was kind of meh, and ended up being really impressed by how great it sounded. Especially their voices. The harmonies were tight!

Oh, and the setlist made me think of the Fish radio interview and the caller who asked if he thought the setlists were stale. Farmhouse opener? Long, jammed out second set Limb by Limb?

So, besides Stars Bangles Banner, this Summer Tour (so far) has been all Phish originals.

I was thinking, would Phish be able to do an ENTIRE Tour without repeating a single tune? And without covers, ta-boot??

During one of the many jam sessions at last night’s sweet show, I was also thinking, how kewl it would be if Phish played a show where only 3 out of the 4 members played at a time? And their typical ‘instruments’ / station. A couple interesting combos I’d like to hear would be:

Page-Mike-Fishman and
Page-Trey-Mike

Then I started thinking alongst the lines of, who will ‘fill-in’ for the 4th member’s notes during certain tunes and how would the improv portions of those tunes be? Esp the combo with no percussionist.

Yes, today’s Phish thoughts were inspired by the 7/4 show last night :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Phish could totally pull off a tour with no covers, and it can be really great. They have way more than enough original material. I was thinking last night though that a lot of their danciest songs are actually covers. After Light last night I was like they need to go into something real funky here and all I could think of to fill that spot were things like 2001, Boogie On, Sneaking Sally, etc. These songs have just become such an important part of the Phish lexicon that it’s hard to picture them doing an entire tour without visiting some of those type of songs. I think a lot of this has to do with what I’ve been saying for five years now, which is that Phish isn’t interested in making new fans. Phish’s covers were one of the major factors that got me to first give them a shot. I remember saying “any band that plays Syd Barret songs is a band I’m willing to give a listen”.

Anyway I’m going back to bed…or for a run…we’ll see. Has anyone noticed Page keeps trying to go into Halfway to the Moon? I heard it during DWD last night and LxL the night before. Not that that’s a very exciting tease. Just sayin what I hear. H Here’s to another scorcher tonight!

But can they do a tour with no repeats AND no covers?!?!?! Probably too much mental concentration to keep track for these guys.

Oh…well no. I mean they could, but I would have a tough time going to the end of tour shows if I knew there was no chance of a Tweezer or Antelope.

They could easily do a tour with no covers and I wouldn’t mind the least.

My non-music related take away while watching the show last night: I started out thinking about how Page looks like he should be a high school teacher and then tried to decide what job the rest of them looked like, until I realized they all look like high school teachers. Deep thoughts.

^

I’m way stoked about this band right now. I made myself a couple mixes of 3.0 only, for the car, because it sounded like a good idea and kinda is.

One disc’s got Joy, Party Time, ‘Wingsuit’, as well as ‘Halfway to the Moon’, ‘Steam’, and that bunch of tunes from 2010 & 2011 that didn’t go anywhere, lol …

The second disc has Fuego, Mike’s Overstep, the 7/1/14 show I just watched … and I guess I threw on a handful of tunes from the LiveBait#10, to fill up the rest (CD-ROM, car stereo reads mp3s) …

Right now I’m relistening to 7/1 and it’s way awesome. Better than I thought at the time. Haven’t heard set two yet, but this first set is hitting the spot.

When I can’t see the show live, I check the setlist like a rabid sports fan checking the score.

I didn’t make a mix but I’m definitely listening to 3.0 material…Fuego, Joy, then Party Time. Find I’m enjoying Joy a lot more than I remember.

and that bunch of tunes from 2010 & 2011 that didn’t go anywhere,

Track listing? I could probably stand to brush up…I’m not as with-it on the new songs not an albums.

Listening to THIS now. Wow.

Yeah that Fuego song is at the top of my list, as far as 3.0 goes. Love it.

3.0 tunes that are not on studio projects:

Summer of '89
Dr. Gabel
My Problem Right There (was that in the Hands on a Hardbody show though?)
Show of Life
Steam
Snow
Amidst the Peals of Laughter
You Never Know

Haley’s Comet is a cover, no?

Heheheh

Good list. Maybe I’ll mix those myself. Dawned on me that I’ve never heard Summer of 89. Also, you missed Burn That Bridge but they only played it once. (Yes, the Problem song is also from Hands on a Hardbody)

Haley’s Comet is a cover, no?

A cover of Nancy Wright, maybe.

Also, wow…it’s not just Fuego…all of 7/4/14 Set II is sick. Each song seems to segue to the next and the first four tunes or so are all type-II adventures…loved the pseudo-vocal jam at the end of DWD into Twist. We even got delay loops and Jedi Trey during First Tube. Set of the tour so far?

I’m waiting for hetty Waves>Wingsuit jam this summer…

::Listens to 7/1/14::

yeah man, this is fire, wow these guys’r jammin cool yeah man

::pops in 5/8/92::

Comparing today to 1992? That’s just not fair. Might as well compare Carmelo Anthony to Michael Jordan.

Anyway, been brushing up on studio stuff…

-Does Mike have issues with the law or something? In the one “Mike song” on Joy and Fuego, he’s talking about trouble. In Sugar Shack, he talks about getting off with the loot and being captured and having to escape to the Sugar Shack. In 555, he’s also on the run and looking to make his mistake on the 555, whatever that is. There something that Mike needs to let us know about?

-With Trey, what’s with the cold motif? First Frost, then both Snow and Winterqueen? To be fair, I like Frost/Winterqueen so keep it up.

Listened to some tunes that didn’t make albums.

I liked Peals of Laughter…not sure why they couldn’t fit that on Fuego.
Snow was a bit of a mess…Mike’s voice was off and the harmonies weren’t right…need to fix that.
You Never Know was a bit of “meh.”
Absolutely adore Steam and it’s already a great jam song live…the NYE version is sick.
Why not play Problem Right There more?..That song is fun.
I like Say Something quite a bit though the harmonies are a bit weak…the song makes up for it though.

It’s just how it happened man. I was driving along with 7/1/14 playin. Pretty sweet show, rite? Got to supermarket, busted out earbuds and innocently chose me some Spring 92 Phish, and the janitors came to clean up face melt in aisle 2.

My mom and dad are going to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame today. I told them to take a picture of the hot dog. I don’t think they understood the significance…

Tell them to swing by my work and say Hello.
