Type Your Phish Thoughts

Are the Big Black Furry Creature from Mars and the Martian Monster two separate lifeforms or just different names for the same thing?

Yes, but, judging from the lyrics, the BBFCM lives a fairly contemporary life here on Earth with a psychotic spouse trying to kill it. Meanwhile, the Martian Monster lives on Mars and seems to be the one doing the killing.

Maybe they choose shows for Dinner and a Movie based on what unsold merch they have left.

Or maybe when you order a shirt Trey screen prints it at his place and sends it out personally.

Remain In Light was SO GOOD. Dinner and a Movie mix sounded great. What a treat.

What’ the name of Trey’s cat? Mike’s three cats? Anyone? Anyone?

Inky, Blinky, Pinky, & Clyde.

What’ the name of Trey’s cat?

According to this article, it’s Joey:

Mike’s three cats?

Mike tweeted about two of them - Izzy and Griffin:

Also, this is amazing:

I’m up to 2016, listening to one show a year for 3.0. Just this thing I’m trying.

I thought it’d help me differentiate what the 3.0 years are like, one year to another. They still seem similar to me generally but I wonder what other fans think of 3.0. You know what I mean? Each 1.0 and 2.0 year has a sort of unique overall feel to it, or I’d say so starting at like 92 and going all the way thru 2004. I might be imagining that, and I’ve just failed to invent imagined perceived characteristics for each of the 3.0 years.

I’m also breaking every couple shows, to spin some early 1.0 show for perspective.

I’ve got like 12 shows in, over the last week or so

1998 Providence Island tour
1997 Worcester run
4/01/86 Hunt’s Burlington (5-man Phish!)
11.29.09
10.26.10
07.01.12
10.25.13
07.01.14
08.22.15
07.08.16 (listening now)

Hoping to hear these shows before I reach the burned out stage:
8.05.17
10.17.18
11.29.19
11.30.19
02.20.20
10.31.98
12.16.99
12.29.90
Maybe SPAC 04
Maybe the whole 4 show end of Summer 95 run

Generally speaking, this exercise has taught me again that Phish is just the greatest. Specifically speaking, it’s great to recognize 3.0 as better than maybe I thought.

Radical thought, as far as tagging files and sorting and naming shows and shit:

Maybe shows should be named like the date (year > mo > day), and go state>city>venue name rather than venue>city>state. For those of us keeping and sorting actual audio files still. Like “1994-07-08 MA Mansfield Great Woods”

I got overwhelmed and decided to just keep that to myself and never bring it up

Nice! I may do the same with 3.0 shows because I also am a little hazy when it comes to distinguishing year-to-year in 3.0.

A big part of being able to visualize (or “audiate”?) 1.0 is that I’ve listened to so much of it. But I think a bigger reason is that the band was operating very differently in terms of output and growth in 1.0.

Though the band continues to introduce new material in 3.0, they aren’t making music in the same way - living and breathing Phish 24/7 - they did in 1.0. So we can hear some distinct eras in 1.0 and actually pinpoint specific changes to support (ie Mike’s switch to the Modulus, Europe tours, Billy Breathes and SOTG jam sessions, listening to James Brown on the bus).

So the years in 3.0 seem more nuanced to me because there’s fewer drastic shifts between tours, IMO. In a way their changes in jamming seems more natural because they’re developed on stage and in the moment, rather than fueled by constant practicing.

Just some thoughts. . . about Phish . . . that I typed.

Good conversation in here. Did anyone here ever read the Phish biography (it came out in 2013 I think…) I read it! It def shows a difference between the way they operated and continued til now. Also worth reading : Heads by Jesse Jarnow

I think Thnksfrstpal/Fugazi was/is Jesse Jarnow

omg I can’t wait to read this! Thanks for posting!
