I have an opinion, I voiced it, you don’t agree with it, cool. I’m used to that here, ha. Having a different opinion doesn’t mean I don’t get something unless your head is too far up your own ass to see differing opinions make the world go round. Did I ever say people young or old shouldn’t see Phish or that it wasn’t special? NO! But thanks for putting words in my mouth. When I said people shouldn’t tour, that was actually in agreement with Skanky Hanky that since you’re going to get 5 min BDTNL’s and shit every few shows, that shit would get old after 6 months straight, no? The addition about people who “tour” now was just an observation followed by a semmingly silly comment, nothing more. Lighten up, k?
wow…why do they need to get a grip? unless one is just against the whole idea of dropping out and touring all together then I think its kinda bs to tell younger fans you missed the great shit, so even if you love it now, too bad you missed the best stuff so quit following the band… and I’m pretty sure there aren’t many, if any, that are touring because they’re trying to hold on to a past era…they’re touring because its fun as shit and apparently they have the means, if that’s what makes them happy I don’t know what gives anyone the right to tell them to move on cause the music isn’t what it was in '94 and '97
I think some of the folks around here are just outgrowing Phish (which is just fine, I understand), and you’re forgetting what it was like to not give a fuck as long as you could get to a show as many times as possible…I think its funny some people kind of knock others for just mentioning rumors, like if some of ya’ll were kids again I think you’d be all over that shit, maybe I’m completely wrong…but its like there’s something wrong with getting excited about the possibility of some rumors being true, like if they don’t come true we’re all gonna be heartbroken and not know how to go on
I have noticed this myself. There is nobody on this site that I dislike, and actually I very much like everyone I’ve met in person from here, and some I haven’t. However, that being said, some of you are pretty obnoxious “Debbie Downer” types sometimes. I don’t need to name names, and I’m NOT talking about Ollie (even though I do disagree with the “move on” comment), but there are some people who come into show review threads and say that “based on this set list, this show is weak as fuck”. Give me a fucking break. Go back to your stuffy little office and listen to your precious '94 tapes while the rest of us enjoy the hell out of what Phish is doing right now. Because I stand by my statement that what Phish is doing now is completely unique and still very exciting. So… yeah.
I think its funny how nothing is ever as good as it once was.
Sorry I was 10 years old in 94 and missed the “glory days” but who fucking cares. If you think that something is missing or that the band isn’t the same then go follow Beber or some other idiot. Its fine to say “ah too bad you weren’t there to see (insert show)” but don’t say “You haven’t seen shit because you weren’t around during (insert time frame)”. To me this band is playing the best since I’ve seen them ('03/'04 & '09/'10) and to me that is something bad ass and special. I’m sure a lot of people feel that way. Just be glad that other generations get to experience something that has been extremely meaningful to you. Quit living in the past,
Hmm…I saw my first Phish show in 1995, so I got nothing on '94. Listen to the shit out of it though! Just about as much as I listen to new Phish. Maybe I am one of the very few, but musically, I have grown right there with the band. I am a pretty pathetic fan that loves JUST ABOUT everything this band has done. I was never a rock star, but I sure partied like one! I am really digging the clear headed writing (yup, that’s right).
I also heard someone mention “how it isn’t often, but when it does happen it is very special” about the “jamming”. This is very true. Even more reason to see this band as much as you can. Especially if it makes you happy. I think that’s why we all are on this board, right? Cause Phish makes us happy.
I am completely pro-touring and have no regrets seeing the amount of shows I did the past few years. Some of the most fun times I’ll ever have for sure. (thanks for the floorspace for asheville, Ollie ) If the situation were right for me I’d still be doing it, but then my Phish angst about them not performing all the way up to their capabilities would be way greater than it is now
it has…but not necessarily around here, and this is definitely the first time I’ve ever seen anyone say that because fans are young and missed the glory days they need to get a grip and move on…I feel like there will be some backpedaling on that statement, but still that’s one of the saddest things I’ve seen said since Phish got back together…it’s only been two years, that’s what bugs me the most, I doubt anyone was saying people shouldn’t tour when Phish announced the reunion, quite the opposite I’d say
I think there’s just a little bit of winter angst going on in here. It’s the dead of winter and everybody is a little bit on edge after the holidays. Once some dates start flying and people start getting their summer plans in place I think the positivity will reign supreme once again.
^Levi, I saw Phish 6 years before you and I’ve been told I missed out on PHish dozens of times by many different OKP members ever since I joined here and was enthusiastic about new Phish. it’s all good, just enjoy what you can enjoy while yer young. most of those “glory days” vets are just cranky that they’ve peaked and can’t rage like they used to.
Is there a difference between “touring” and trying to see as many shows as you can? Be it 5 nights in five states or 3 nights in one state? Is there a connotation to “touring” that I’m missing?
This band fuckin’ rules. Just listened to a bunch of Fall tour. I don’t know what everyone’s getting all cranky about, I think Ollie and Hank have valid points but stoked some peoples’ defenses.
And for crying out loud, they really are playing the best they possibly could play right now, and I AM one of these “vets”, first show was 1990, and I’m here to say they’re playing their best. You wanna split hairs then fine, the early to mid 90s was a smidge better. But for my money these dudes are showing the music world what’s up with being good despite the odds.
I have always considered a person to be “on tour” if they are going to four or more consecutive shows. That number could fluctuate hugely from person to person though. I mean, when I did that four-night Southern run, I definitely felt like I was “on tour”; even though I was only on the road for five days, I was on the road. Therefore I was “on tour”. I just don’t think you have to do the whole tour to be considered a person who is “touring”. Lotta quotation marks goin on here…
^to me it has everything to do with distance traveled…‘on tour’ is more of a feeling, and you’ll know it when you’re on the road going from town to town…like the Blossom>Hershey>Portsmouth run I did felt just as much like I was on tour, or probably more, than the southern run even thought it was a four show run because I stayed in basically 5 different towns (remember it was a three show run with an off night between Hershey and Portsmouth)…last summer’s first leg was pretty tour-friendly, could’ve easily done Chicago too…and if it weren’t for school I would’ve done DC>Alpine, damn last summer was something else, sometimes I forget
