Type Your Phish Thoughts

I can’t wait for Memorial Weekend

Acoustic Suzy = win

I want to see the fountains at the Bellagio programed to a sick YEM.

I think Phish should make the third hiatus official. Then, they should play 50 shows during the hiatus, but under the name H3. Then, they should announce that Phish is getting back together and do a reunion tour.

But the reunion tour will be nothing like the hiatus tour was.

So I was at a meal Friday night with a few people. Two of them are in this acapella group that may be performing Joy this coming semester. I was wondering who was the phan that brought up the idea to sign a Phish tune. They responded by saying that they liked Phish…I was so caught by surprise. Of course they don’t really like em THAT much (compared to all of us of course ), but these weren’t the folks I’d expect to hear Phish praise from.

This summer I really want to hear a ::insert song with dark jam here::->What things Seem

^Like the Carini from Pepsi Center 2/18/03?

So I’ve been going through the highlights of summer and fall, and, well, I WANT SUMMER TOUR NOOOOW!

When does Phish jam in a sig other than 4/4? SoaMelt doesn’t sound standard at all, but when else do they jam in a different time signature? Also looking for specific examples of type 2 jams when they didn’t jam in 4/4.

Taste limb by limb and vultures are all three based time signatures. And SOAMelt i think goes 3 4-4 measures > 1 5-4 measure, and repeat. Your best bet for type 2 jams with irregular time sigs would probably be to just go thru all the crazy 94 jazz jams. Ask doug he knows all the 94 jams way better than me.

DOUBLE POST… Interesting. Always thought the band was named after fishman.

from what i can make out SOAmelt is 4/4… they just syncopate the rhythm… which is to say they accentuate normally unaccented beats… the BUM-BUM, in the last measure, accentuates the upbeat but falls back on the one, the down beat, just after… gives it a funky feel… makes you feel turned around. Another way to make a 4/4 feel different is to swing the off-beats closer to the up and down beats and you feel like… well swinging.

Taste, LXL, vultures, as previously mentioned, are 3/4… 3 pulses/beat… or 12 pulses per measure (4 beats per measure)… instead of 4/4 (16 pulses/measure)… talked about in another thread the full time sig reads as 12/8… 8 beats/measure… and 12 pulses per 4 beats… as, I guess, when notated the first number represents the number of pulses/4 beats and the second number notates number of beats per measure? makes sense to me! oof, I love hand drumming… don’t do much of it these days but its right there flowing thru the veins…

on an different note I purchased and listened to 4-3-98… my first and only listening of the island tour… I’m only 13 years behind… i’m in no rush with these things. My bucket list consists of listening to all of the famous, rather obscure, and subtle phish shows… maybe… and… panties… lots of panties. :eh: Charlie Sheen, winning! reading the dark tower series was on my list as well… and I’m on the last book, which is the B-o-M-p-B-ed.

after a first listen to sai 4/3 I’m not gushing but the band was certainly in a mood and fishman was in rare form… screaming during practically every trey solo… (i’m not saying anything ppl haven’t know for over a decade here)… and the band having such a good time with the songs… rearranging on the spot… which, as a fan, makes you feel “This is important. This means something.” Probably the best antelope ever. I’m not a big fan of my soul but this version tears a hole in the cosmos (or the seat of some hippy’s jeans), really fun… basically they are having so much fun up there… then… back then… its no wonder these are such famous shows.

I’m pretty sure he was just yanking the guys french chain, because in the biography they talk about the band being named after Fish AND I’ve heard him give a totally different account of them naming the band Phish but not after him. Plus if you think about it, why would they have already designed a logo that looked like a fish but was supposed to be the sound of a plane taking off?

^^That is not how a time signature works. The first number is the number of beats per measure, and the second number refers to what type of note is one beat. So 4/4 means that there are 4 beats per measure and that a quarter note equals one beat.

^ah, so taste, lxl, vultures are in 4/3? its been a while since i studied this stuff… still… quarter note equals one beat… like 1 . . . 2 . . . 3 . . . 4 . . . 1 that being 4/4… 3/4 or 4/3? is 1 . . 2 . . 3 . . 4 . . 1 so… thats, a third note per beat?

By 3 based i meant 3/4 or 6/8 etc. Not sure which one these songs are. And you count a 3/4 sig 1-2-3. 1-2-3. 1-2-3. 1-2-3

Thanks for all the input guys. I’m pretty sure, although I can’t find a source to back me up, that Fishman juggles more than 1 time signature during Taste. One on each limb (by limb). Implied rhythms off the original?

So jazz jams from '94, would that be the fall?

Ya cool man cool

I hope Magilla finds its way from Trey tour to Phish tour this summer… preferably leg 2.
